"Sign on, young man, and sail with me. The stature of our homeland is no more than the measure of ourselves. Our job is to keep her free. Our will is to keep the torch of freedom burning for all. To this solemn purpose we call on the young, the brave, the strong, and the free. Heed my call, Come to the sea. Come Sail with me." -- John Paul Jones
"Pardon him, Theodotus; he is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature" --George Bernard Shaw, "Caesar and Cleopatra"
"And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music."--Friedrich Nietzsche
"A kind Providence has placed in our breasts a hatred of the unjust and cruel, in order that we may preserve ourselves from cruelty and injustice. They who bear cruelty, are accomplices in it. The pretended gentleness which excludes that charitable rancour, produces an indifference which is half an approbation. They never will love where they ought to love, who do not hate where they ought to hate."--Edmund Burke
“You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours.”--General Sir Charles Napier
"Μολὼν λαβέ" -- Leonidas
"Blogito Ergo Sum" -- Neptunus Lex
There has to be more to it. If it was ‘just business’, Olbermann would be out completely. He has no business being anywhere near “news”. He and ‘tingly-leg’ Matthews are morons.
The only possible explanation for their continued employment must be partisan decision making.
I tend to think that it IS business.
If Obama was still on a roll they would not have cared to make this move.
With McCain now drawing even, the calculus is quickly changing, as their audience (unlike the NY Times for example) is national. This move shows that while they may be biased, they aren’t stupid.
Yet another bit of evidence that the tipping point may be closer at hand than the pollsters know. McCain is strengthening by the day.
The big midwest battleground states and Virginia will go red, I’m convinced, even if the pools don’t show that yet.
Flatlander: agreed; well stated. Where before I had little hope in any Republican beating out Obamessiah, with Palin as the pick I sense a ‘surge’.
Have already colored my maps (sans any scientific/informed method) and it looks do-able, but close.
And close is better than the previous alternative.
Too late, damage done.
Waiting for a half-time show yesterday, I was informed that I would be hearing from Herr Holbermann after the requisite commercials. I, of course, had long since changed channels by the time the frothing angry man could tell me how GWB was at fault for Tom Brady’s injury.
Good riddance. Won’t miss him much.
Flatlander…agree with the tipping point. No scientific basis, but just feels like it’s coming.
sputtering sportscaster’s…head popping hyperbole
Nicely done. *teehee*
I believe there is a rational basis for the tipping point. It’s the American public comparing 2 full tickets.
On the one hand we have Mr. HopeandChange with the thinnest resume in history of a presidential candidate who chooses a Washington insider with questionable judgement and intelligence (despite his assurances the his IQ is much higher than anyone else’s).
On the other we have a true American patriot with over 20 years of political experience as a Maverick, choosing someone with more executive level experience than Mr. HopeandChange and who has existed fully outside Dupont Circle.
McCain * Palin 2008
I personally give no credence to the polls, since they change daily but only on the order of one or two percentage points. Looking at the results of a suspect-at-best system this closely only breeds discontent as the supposedly favored side latches on to the daily result as a confirmation of their god given destiny to be victorious in three months.
That said, as I was watching the Palin speech I remarked to my wife that there’s no way I could ever take Olberman seriously as a newscaster because every time I saw him all I heard was the SportsCenter theme.
Somehow, I just can’t wipe the grin off my face.
I just love it when that happens!
Ahhh, Olbiewan and Tingletoes. How I shall miss them not.
Only time in my life that I almost destroyed a TV set was watching Olbiewan spew out hateful invective about his favorite target…the President. Not watching him is like not doing drugs…spares the brain from the effects of destructive substances. Lord, what a pathetic and miserable individual.
As for Tingletoes, he can’t seem to settle on just plain stupid or blithering idiot. I actually feel for the guy. Once in a blue moon he does seem to try to be objective, but always ends up getting skewed in favor of some twisted notion ricocheting about his cranium. Such a waste of talent…
