Rivet-

First glance I would guess her "official" nickname will have something to do with football or Michigan. "Wolverine" would be a cool one - a ref to both the ship and the U of M. USS Wolverine (along with her sister USS Sable) was a side wheeled carrier used to train 'Hookers in the Great Lakes back in the day.

Course, it could be "Clumsy" or "Pardon" too. What do I know?

Avondale (bought by Ingalls, bought by NG) has been building junk for at least two decades. I was on the USS Ashland several years after commissioning, and the yards were still trying to sort out the shoddy work put into her during construction. I wouldn't buy a canoe from Avondale, but I'm not sure NN should be painted with the same brush merely because they now share a corporate logo.

Not mention all the things about Ford the car?

FWIW-I own a Ford now, and it works just fine for me. I have to drive it too much is all.

Just for fun, could any of you sea dogs speculate what kind of nickname the Gerald R. Ford is going to end up with? What a lost opportunity with all the great historic names like Sara, Ranger, Lex...

Sorry, didn't mean to diminish the memory Pres Ford. He was an honorable, faithful man who stood in the gap at difficult time. Just that (as noted) there's so many historic fighting ship names sitting on the shelf.
