Old hands that used to enjoy the archives more before we shifted webhosts this summer may be pleased to discover that I’ve finally gotten around to installing the patches required (here and here) to get the extended live archives plug-in to work again.

So there’s that.

Power readers and most bloggers may have discovered that SiteMeter has “upgraded” its interface to the point that it is, for most intents and purposes, unusable. This after crashing practically teh whole intartubes last summer. I believe the company may soon discover that making next to nothing off their service was vastly preferable to the alternative. Pretty much the worst thing that’s been done to an established brand since the “New Coke” fiasco.

I am not alone in this conclusion:

Murdoc: “The new SiteMeter sucks. Really really sucks.”
The Coalition of the Swilling: “Sucks so bad it blows.”
Tigerhawk: “SiteMeter has ruined its product.”

And the unkindest cut of all:
Instapundit: “OH NO. They’ve ruined SiteMeter.”

When you’ve lost Glenn Reynolds…

Repeat after me: “Classic.”

Update: There ya’ go.

Good Afternoon,

We have received and heard your feedback concerning the latest changes to the website. We will implementing a rollback to the website immediately. We will also be responding to each of your support requests as soon as possible. If you have any questions please let us know.

Sincerely,

SiteMeter Support Team

Update 2: That whole “change” thing? Not all that.

Credit where it’s due, the SiteMeter folks recognized the error of their ways and swiftly rowed back. Maybe if someone had been that diligent at Merril Lynch, or Lehman, or Bear Stearns…

Know where all the “New Coke” syrup went to after the US rejected it?

I strongly suspect, the Orient. While in NAS/SOHEPA/PG, our supplies came out of the Philippines. The “Coke” was “new coke”.

Anyone out there experience the same thing back in the end of the ’80s?

I agree. Just went to my sitemeter…and…garbage.

H3ll, I’d like to see how bad they’ve gooned it ‘cept after the upgrade, I can’t get back into my account…

I’m with SteelJaw, I’m willing to give it a chance, but they won’t let me.

Someone compared it to Vista, which is unfair, as I like Vista, and well, it WORKS.

    OH YEAH!!
I looked at mine this morning and went “WTF is that?!” SJS, you might just want to consider yourself lucky … and move on.

Sheesh… I guess I am thinking StatCounter now.
    Anyone here use that?

Just loaded StatCounter and ExtremeTracker. I’ll let you know which one I like better (StatCounter gets the early nod since it allows you to enter starting page counts rather than defaulting to newbie.)

Please keep us posted on the Statcounter thing. I spent way too much frickin’ time this morning fooling with sitemeter… and was so pissed I could scream.

I know its free. I get that. But as I was telling Pamibe, if I can’t get to my referrals, then it is useless to me. I don’t care about gender, from what country they come, or their IP address (unless its spam), I only care about URL.

And I was wondering if I was the only one irritated. I was making my rounds of blogs and everyone was pretty silent until I came here. So… thank you. The whole misery loves company thing…

I even emailed Tammi and said, “Who else do you use?!” I think she uses something other than sitemeter and she has always liked it.

Glad to know I’m not the only one unhappy with the new Sitemeter. I’m too busy to do anything about it, but until I saw they’d rolled it back, I’d made a mental note to find something different after I get back from BlogWorld.

Extreme Tracker’s very reliable, although I also use a Feedjit live tracker on the sidebar.

Lex, it sure looks like everybody is having a good time in the “sandbox”. This is a little off topic, but Friday, you asked about “Google Chrome”. Then you talked about two other things, “Google Chrome for the Mac” and the fact you are using Mozilla Labs “Firefox”. There appears to be some issues with the data acquired through the use of “Chrome”, who owns it? Does Google have the right to retain all of that information indefinitely? According to the original Google EULA, the answer was yes. This issue has been or is being debated now. It appears Google is willing to tone the EULA back, how much or for how long is, in my opinion, still a question. The statement you made about the use of “Firefox” and you like it. Two websites to consider- http://labs.mozilla.com/ and http://webkit.org/,both of these sites will give you some insight on some of the component parts of “Chrome”. It is my understanding, the primary target audience is for “Windows/Vista” users. Let the technology catch up. This is just one VERY GRUMPY OLD VET’S VIEW.

    As always,

Grumpy, I’m gonna follow the same rule I’ve used with software of any stripe for damn near 15 years now: Always wait till it’s seen at least one update/bugfix/service pack. I’ve managed to miss pretty much all the screaming.

@Byron and unkawill, A WISE IDEA! I use Mac with Leopard, nothing more than UNIX with a nice graphic user interface. 15 years sounds like a long time, Byron. I can remember the worst thing you could do to someone was to “shuffle his data input cards.” Thanks, As always, Grumpy

And I thought it was just me having problems with Sitemeter.

Wonder when Colonel Ken is going to sue “Coalition of the Swilling” for stealing his trademark.
