Hope you enjoy the weather:
Russian warships have set off for Venezuela for joint exercises unprecedented since the Cold War.
The fleet of ships, headed by the nuclear-powered Peter the Great cruiser, set off from its base at Severomorsk in the Arctic.
The ships are due to take part in joint manoeuvres with Venezuela in November…
Russian Navy spokesman Igor Dygalo said the ships set sail at 1000 local time (0600 GMT), and would travel 15,000 nautical miles to reach their destination.
“It’s the nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser Peter the Great, the anti-submarine warship Admiral Chebanen.
You couldn’t buy training like this, and here they are, bringing it to our very doorstep.

ah, yes, the joys of finely having a warm water port…
i hope they enjoy their stay in such balmy climes…
send pictures!
“99 TARBOX this is SCREWTOP on guard. WASEX WASEX. All aircraft switch button 10 for tasking.”
Ah, the PETR VELIKIY.
That’s Russian for “Great big TARGET.”
Hmm….Departure at 0600Z 22 Sep. Estimated speed of advance 20 kts. About 8,000nm to the VACAPES area…
They should be off the coast around 8-9 October.
I hope the bubbleheads don’t have a collision while watching those guys.
Makes me want to be a SWO again, on something small out of Mayport. Sounds like fun…
I hope Ivan has enough fleet tugs to help out.
Did you see the posse for the TU-160s?
Nose,
Don’t forget to allow time for the Hornets to tank first!
Skippy-san,
Don’t forget 2nd and 3rd, too.

“It’s the nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser Peter the Great, the anti-submarine warship Admiral Chebanenko and other accompanying ships”
I hope they can get an Akula underway for this.
I wonder what we’ll actually do with this.
On the one hand, Chavez spouts so much anti-US rhetoric that we might stay away to ensure we don’t give him any fodder to show how the great demon of the U.S. is interfering in his sovereign right to train blah blah blah
On the other, Chavez has a tendency to make stuff up about us, so why not give him something real to be pissed about and monitor the heck out of this.
Choices, choices….
Too bad we gave up Roosey Roads-or Howard AFB. Guess the P-3′s will just have to rough it in Curacao………….
midwatch, re Akula, I was thinking the same thing. You can’t buy training like that..
Wish they’d bring a Kilo along, you know, to show the merchandise to Hugo…would be pretty fun for some of our guys. On the other hand, it’s a loooon loooong way from Severomorsk to Caracas…hope they bring along plenty of tow rope.
Claudio
Hmmm, Peter the Great Artificial Reef.
Sounds like good fishing potential.
Do you really think any of
that will happen or,will the U.S. just stand by while the soviets/ er Russians make inroads into our “sphere of influence?
This really is a dangerous game…
Hugo might find out that riding a tiger is easy compared to getting off it once the ride is over.
And the ride will end.
How much practice does the Russian Navy get sailing for such distances and durations?
