Torque

Ecce: The radial engine motorcycle.

I think – based on the keen intuition of one who has paid his dues on the tanker – that they’re going to need a larger gas tank.

Couple of nice motors to be astride of…

WANT!!! Even if I can’t ride a cycle anymore. *DROOL*

There’s something you don’t see every day.

…wonders if ya have to kick a little rudder on take off…

    Byron/

LOL. Was just thinking the same thing!

Only thing I see missing is that there is no saddle holster fitted to one side with a 12 gauge in it.

    Hey Lex-

I don’t usually ask for sources, but where did you find this?

I have seen something similar from Jesse James (The Monster Garage guy) where he had arranged a radial engine on a bike so that the pistons were perpendicular to the frame. Different bike but also cool.

I wouldn’t call this ‘practical’, or ‘art’, but there’s something to be said for ‘doing cool stuff just because you can.’

    Hope all is well,

That pic was provided unsourced by occasional reader Wilko, who may, in time, illuminate all of us.

The gas tank’s fine…what he’s gonna need is a bigger oil tank.

  • BeachBum

KEEP the motorcycle, that looks like a Bearcat tail in the upper right corner of the photo!

Oh ,for those that want more info on the bike, Uncle Google says look here: http://www.jrlcycles.com/page/page/4187437.htm

Wouldn’t want my leg rubbin on that drive belt. Nasty ride.

Or a bare leg brushing a cylinder or two…

  • Beat me to it Mike.

Radials: Fill the oil, check the gas.

That is insanely cool. I’d like to see the quad on the guy who has to kick it through each cylinder to check for hydraulic lock before starting.

    Beachbum,
    Look again. That’s a T-28 tail not a an F8F.
Anybody want to to hear this thing run go here.

gyroscopic effect of the engine would be non-trivial with the huge crankshaft. Bet it sounds great. Radial engine planes have to hand propped to clear oil out of the bottom cylinders. I wonder how he does it with this bike? Compression on my bike (12.1:1) is so high I can’t even push it in 1st gear.

  • Wilko

The crack Lex readership got it right. It was built by John Levy of JRL Cycles and a youtube link to boot. You guys are good.

So Lex, … you trading in the German machine for something with a little more “punch”?

That engine gives an entirely new twist on the old “keep the shiny side up” admonition.

My question: How does the rider see over the bars… an elevator saddle?

  • horsepower’s for bragging…torque wins off the line.

  • “How does the rider see over the bars… an elevator saddle?”

Same as any taildragger pilot does.

Bah! The radial should be *inside* the rear rim, using planetary gears for transmission and of course with a clutch off the cylinder heads. Use brake disks for the clutch, come to think of it.

It would free up a lot of room for forward-mounted gasoline and oil tanks, plus a decent oil cooler.

Because that way you could be stopped for a long time in traffic and the motor could just sit there and spin, thus not only keeping it cool but also impressing the heck out of those dudes who’ve spent $5K on rims for their $2K Civic.

    Just saying…

I’ve long had a fantasy about building another motorcycle using a John Deere Model 70 diesel. 450CI of twin-cylinder diesel, idles at 50 RPM. Has a little V-4 gas motor you fire up to start it.

Upswept fish-tail exhaust (straight, no baffles), a sissy bar right out of Easy Rider, huge ol’ pair of ape-hangers and a hard-tail frame with a steel 1949 Fordson tractor seat…

The sound alone would be amazing. BOOM! pop pop pop BOOM! pop pop pop. At speed, 70mph, BOOM! chicka BOOM! chicka BOOM!

Sturgis Rally is in my home state, been going since 1990. Trust me, no matter how insane, asinine, or flat-out crazy it is, there’s somebody who will buy it from you.

So, Eric, you saying ‘rev the throttle’ and you do an instant donut?

Max, I wanna see a picture of that critter when it’s finished.

Ah the Fordson…Magneto fired and a beast to hand crank. Me kindly ol’ Grandmother had one in the shed, but no one dared crank it…seeing as how a backfire at start (which it was reported to be fond of doing) would demolish the old arm bones. Dad and his cousins always looked at it with a wary eye.

  • MaxDamage

Mongo, I have the very same beast in my machine shed. Killed two of my ancestors, it did. Can’t quite bring myself to sell it, though I use it so little. Be kind of like selling a car with no brakes, just don’t wish to inflict that upon others.

And if I ever build it, I won’t sell it. I’ll ride it to Surgis and retire on it :-)

The engine in the bike is a Rotec R2800, 110hp, that drinks about 5.8 gal/hr at cruise. Not so much for a round-engine aircraft, but the gas tank on the bike isn’t going to take you very far.

The company is Australian, and has been making round engines for about 8 years now. They also make the R3600, 9-cylinder, 150hp engine.

This from the same country that found a fellow who built a v-twin bike. Using two cylinders sliced from a Rolls-Royce Merlin.

Heck, if y’all like that one, you should check out the Dodge Tomahawk – it has a 500hp Viper V-10 engine and is billed as the “world’s fastest motorcycle,” with a 0-60 time of 2.5 seconds! Although the fact that it really has 4 wheels might mar the claim a bit…

Though for now I’ll just stick with my trusty Triumph…

  • MajHarvey

Oh, and I don’t know about yours, Lex – but the Tomahawk comes with a half-mil price tag.
