And no, we don’t all eat like that. All the time. Although it is true that very few carrier sailors can spell “MRE”.

Targets of Opportunityblog advertising is good for you Credo"Sign on, young man, and sail with me. The stature of our homeland is no more than the measure of ourselves. Our job is to keep her free. Our will is to keep the torch of freedom burning for all. To this solemn purpose we call on the young, the brave, the strong, and the free. Heed my call, Come to the sea. Come Sail with me." -- John Paul Jones "Pardon him, Theodotus; he is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature" --George Bernard Shaw, "Caesar and Cleopatra" "And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music."--Friedrich Nietzsche "A kind Providence has placed in our breasts a hatred of the unjust and cruel, in order that we may preserve ourselves from cruelty and injustice. They who bear cruelty, are accomplices in it. The pretended gentleness which excludes that charitable rancour, produces an indifference which is half an approbation. They never will love where they ought to love, who do not hate where they ought to hate."--Edmund Burke “You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours.”--General Sir Charles Napier "Μολὼν λαβέ" -- Leonidas "Blogito Ergo Sum" -- Neptunus Lex Amazon AssociateFor the Effort!Winnar!![]() Subscribe![]() CategoriesPagesTagsacademy

Brought back a lot of memories. Real shooters worked up on the flight deck coated in exhaust and JP-5…
You know, JP is a scent that you can recognize anywhere. One whiff and the adrenaline starts pumping in my veins.
Nice pix.
All I can say is a Nuke powered carrier seems a whole lot cleaner than an oil burner. Amazing what a bit of technology and knowledge can do to improve life aboard. Also it was interesting to see pictures of those areas we were never allowed into as ordinary ship’s company (unless you knew someone).
I listened to that audio of a launch from the berthing compartment. Shoot, he shoulda been up front where the cat terminates. I still hear that “rattlerattlerattleTHUMP-WHOOSH” of launches. I can sleep through almost anything after three years of that! Intersperse the SquuuueeeeEEEK of the sonar, incessant 60 cycle hum and 400hz buzz, constant fan noise. After that, what’s a little gunfire noise in the street have to offer? heh. (not here, apartment I had in Houston)
Great link Lex. I’ll reminisce myself to sleep tonight on that……
That was certainly worth the time. Appreciate the link, Lex.
Lots of thoughts, lots of thoughts for comments, but mostly: Wow! Nikon D90 is the @#$%!
Those are some of the cleanest, clearest, sharpest pix I’ve seen in awhile.
wow, definitely a lot of memories.
cruised on Stennis in 98 during it’s maiden round the world voyage. we had the Dogs and the Rippers onboard, prob the best Tomcat squadrons in the Navy at the time. Also 131 and 136 with the gas guzzlers. Good squadrons too, although not as much fun.
Admiral Vance was then Skipper of the Rippers. His bio pic looks exactly the same, like he hasn’t aged at all in 10 years.
Like the pic of the LSOs management offsite. Heck of a location for it.
“I don’t know what these folks were doing–perhaps some kind of management offsite.”
Loved that caption.
Good pics of the mighty WarCod. Now, that is one fine aircraft. I guess the other ones were OK, too, but nothing like the COD.
EXCELLENT! Simply Outstanding!!!
That was awesome — especially for my oldest two boys (ages 8 & 6).
Thanks for sharing!
Humble,
Don’t you know? That’s why God invented CODs. So the P-3 guys could have something to look up to!
Nose-
Heck yes!! And, God willing and the crick don’t rise, in 2 months I’ll have orders to fly that fine piece of logistical machinery.
Well, I’ll have to fly the T-45, first, but we all make sacrifices.
