Kumbaya, and that

I wonder who could be behind this?

Gunmen have opened fire at a number of sites in the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay), killing at least 78 people and injuring about 200 more.

Police said shooting was continuing and that the incidents were co-ordinated terrorist attacks. Gunmen have taken hostages at two luxury hotels.

At least seven sites have been targeted across India’s financial capital.

A fire is sweeping through the Taj Palace, Mumbai’s most famous hotel which is now surrounded by troops.

The BBC’s Andrew Whitehead says a claim of responsibility by a little-known group, Deccan Mujhaideen, may harden suspicions that Islamic radicals are involved.

Too soon to say, of course. Could be the LTTE, I suppose – although theoretically they’re running out of steam. Mustn’t neglect the possibility of enraged Lutherans. Everyone being the same the world over. Just like us.

Sounds like a good idea – let those who would use terror to advance their political goals go first.

Yep, that’s my normal comment – I’m willing, the other side doesn’t appear to be.

“I wonder who could be behind this?”

Can’t get too cynical, now can we Lex?
Careful, careful, let’s not jump to conclusions–as you are so prescient to point out, musn’t forget about enraged Lutherans or Seventh Day types–that is as long as you can find a plastic surgeon to remove that tongue welded into your cheek. MUSLIM terrorists?
Ya think? As Damon Runyon once famously said: “The race does not always go to the Swift, nor the contest to the Strong–but that’s the way to bet.”

    Gee…What are the odds?

All they are really saying is “Give peace a chance” (in their own way). If we show intolerance to their message, then the terrorists have won.

Talked with man who returned yesterday from 3-month mission in north central India just this afternoon. He says it’s Hindus vs. Muslims… the age old conflict from the Kashmir region is spreading.

He also reported that India is the unfortunate target of the most terrorist incidents in the world. I agree, ManlyDad, as long as folks are willing to do it their way, they’ll play nice. It’s the intolerance of their methods, you know, that compels them to strike.

    Yes, it’s a one-way street with them, isn’t it?

  • Perhaps it was a result of anxiety?

You know, the world has missed a great opportunity. For the last 8 years we had a President that was willing to endure non-stop political punishment to do the right thing in fighting terrorism. Now we have in the wings another poll-driven Democrat who will likely not hazard even a slight reduction in the level of adulation he feels is his due. The American eagle is again risk-averse.

What could have been accomplished if, instead of taking the opportunity to advance the cause of the Democratic Party, the US media and the Democrats had decided to advance the cause of opposing international religious terrorism?

    We will never know.

  • Maybe if just sat down and talked together? You know, without preconditions?

Last year some internet posting designated the Muslims as “the religion of perpetual outrage.” I wish I could credit the author, because the designation has stuck firmly in my mind. It is apt, and implies how helpless we Westerners, Judeo-Christian types, feel when faced with error and cruelty on so many fronts.

    My tolerance has been exhausted.

  • Was anyone surprised? Did anyone have to wonder what religion motivated them? We have reached the weary point where even our outrage is blunted by the common acceptance that this is how the world operates. They kill people. We light candles and build memorials.

    G. W. Bush still holds the office of the President of the United States. He should act. Perhaps he will. I can hope.

Cows coexist. Deer coexist. Man receives/conceives the thought, considers the thought, accepts or rejects the thought and then acts. Lots have trouble with that, Must be their schooling.

Well, I think we know who’s behind this round. Never mind the current bunch of Hindu nutjobs who are equally murderous towards Christians in northern India, this bunch is probably from the junior religion. But all their backing comes from “Pure Land,” aka Pakistan, and the Indians know it, too. Won’t go on forever like this, you know.

    Thanks, Mohatma Gandhi!

Marianne, I’m more struck by another comment someone posted about the “religion of perpetual outrage”. They said that instead of the “religion of peace” it should be the “religion of pieces”.

  • Read a few moments ago that Indian sharpshooters dealt with several bad actors.

Sounds like the ROE is well suited to not required having a hot washup after the operation between both sides.

Not so odd to read this glorious AM that the Indies are pointing a finger at the Paki’s as the responsible ones.

Or was that Pockies? Ask The Chosen One…he seems to know…

I’m with you, ASM. Dubbya’s still lead dog on this sled, and it would serve us well for to begin an eleventh hour foray into the wilderness. Stop screwing around where we know they ain’t. As Emeril is fond of saying “Kick it up a notch”.

Isn’t that what The Chosen One said he would do? ‘Go after him’, the language I recall, even if ‘him’ is ensconced in Pockie dirt somewhere. Ah me…choices…choices…decisions…yes, decisions…
