Venezuela: Russian Navy Arrives for Joint Exercises

Russian warships, greeted by a 21-gun salute, arrived at the port of La Guaira, Venezuela, on Tuesday for training exercises coinciding with the visit this week of President Dmitri A. Medvedev of Russia. The naval maneuvers point to strengthening ties between the two oil-exporting countries, with Russian companies seeking a range of energy, weapons and mining contracts in Venezuela.

It’ll be nice to have the tyranny of distance on our side for a change.

We’ll see you around.

    Curtis says:

Isn’t it remarkable that the USN deploys ships worldwide year round but the only 2 Russian ship deployments since the fall of the Berlin Wall attract all the notice in the press? Why if it wasn’t for the fact that their submarines keep burning, sinking or blowing up, one would hardly have known there was a Russian navy these past 10 years.

    Diego says:

I´m curious, how many stops they made or how many ports they visited? what speed where they moving at?

They left their base maybe two months ago, what were the doing?

The speed listed for the Peter The Great is 32 knots or something, maybe they should post the speed of the tug boats not mentioned in the articles..

Also being a Venezuelan i am very, i mean very happy that we´ll now have nuclear reactors to power our oil based economy.

It´s sad but thank God i don´t live there any more.

And here I was thinking that our ASW guys had lost all their opportunities to hone the skillset.

Game on! (We’ll save ‘Fight’s on!’ for later)
