@Oldschool, I like the handle, I came from the old school, it a whole different way of thinking.

I really appreciate your enjoyment of "Tumbleweeds", your whole comment was just plain good medicine for a tired mind, what's left of it.

@Max, times have really changed and not for the better. Going back 40 years ago, I can remember the "suggestion" of our drill instructors. He said, "If you are on military duty of any kind, you WILL be in full uniform, if outside, cover included, consistent with the season. NO EXCEPTIONS!"

There was a reason he stated it that way. He just didn't want to hear, "BOOM, HALT! I got it bass ackward again. Oh well, he's halted, not talking much." Note, he put it a lot more colorfully.

What's not clearly stated in the article and in our comments is what drove the rapid increase in SWAT teams: the "War on Drugs." Anything's excused when we're at war, right? Constitutional protections? No, gotta stop that kid from smoking that doobie, even if it means killing the not-so-occasional innocent.

Grumpy: Hogarth Hemp was a favorite ! Hogarth took the bows while 'they' took the falls ... one of the top trachea tweakers of all times ... tripped more traps than a nearsighted muskrat. Never was clear why he came to Grimy Gulch because the population never diminished. Bucolic Buffalo, Ham and Beans the muleskinners - what a cast of characters. Personally preferred the earlier LotsaLuckExpress to the later version ....

We have all known a 'buffalo' or a 'ham' or Snakeye in our wanderings ... even a few of the other characters .. not so many Hogarths.

Grumpy, I meant nothing ill towards the folks in blue, just that unless they can be identified as police upon immediate visual inspection none of the exceptions allowed to them in the law as police should be in effect, for that would be unfair to those who didn't know.

For example, assaulting a police officer might carry a mandatory 10 years in jail penalty. I don't mind that if they're in uniform -- you take a swing at a uniformed officer, you knew what you were getting into.

If an undercover officer wearing a stained sweatshirt and I get into a fight, charges of assault should be allowed but the greater charge of assaulting an officer should be disallowed -- if I can't identify him as an officer upon site then to my mind that's unequal protection under the law, for the protected cannot be identified.

That's all I'm saying. Hard to honor their service if you can't identify them.

I totally concur with Max on this one. If scary skin-headed criminals are government employees, they should be identified as such.

Which reminds me: Just why, and when, did the forces of order start wearing what used to be known as convict haircuts?

I'll never trust a cop who looks like he doesn't own a comb.
