Wish I'd had been older and had the opportunity to explore like my father did earlier, or talk to old timers like he did. Though later when I was in the Air Force I did get to talk to one old gentleman who had been a Bataan Death March surviver who stayed in the Philippines. The National Museum of the Pacific War is in Fredericksburg, Texas (hometown of Admiral Chester Nimitz) and every so often they hold special events for Veterans Day and Pearl Harbor Day. This year I met my parents there the weekend before Veterans Day and they were having live demonstrations of some of the weapons and equipment used, from .45 Colts to BARs and M1917 .30 MG and M1919 .50 HMG, to a flamethrower and Japanese small arms and machineguns. Quite a nice museum, currently undergoing renovation that will double their display space (and some of their artifacts are incredible, stuff I never thought would've survived). This year they also hosted the Pearl Harbor Survivors Reunion. I couldn't make it, don't know if my dad made it back down. I said a prayer and thanked God that my family is here and able to see our history up close and personal. We will never forget. Having been stationed at Kaneohe, there were opportunities aplenty to visit sites around the island where evidence of the opening day can be found. I've been to Wake Island and pondered what those valiant lads must've faced. Always remember...always remind others...always...
