A visiting Quaker scholar at the Yale Divinity school notes that before reconciliation between any two parties in conflict can begin in earnest, there must be a frank and open dialogue about the differences that parted them.
The YDS hosted a summer seminar for a group of visiting Islamic scholars and jurists entitled, “Loving God and Neighbor in Word and Deed: Implications for Christians and Muslims”. Sarah Ruden argues that, at least when it comes to holding up “our” end, the West is being not just polite but actively deceitful. Based on her experiences in post-”reconciliation” South Africa, she argues that we will all pay a higher price in the end, for our deference in the beginning.
Frank and open?
Not at Yale.
