Trust me. Christmas day in Big D may be the same temp as San Diego
and there is no snow or ice at the moment

  • OldTFlyer

Getting into an argument about the relative merits of San Diego versus Dallas weather is a losing proposition. Throw in any other variable (cost of housing, taxation level, A**hole per square meter index, etc.) and the balance tips readily…..

  • SJBill

Try that same comparison this coming July, OK?

BTW, here in SJ we’ve had snow this week, up 2000 ft, where it belongs.

  • I’m with OTF ~ it may be nice in SD, weather-wise, but it’s California.

Let’s just say it’s a good place to be from.

  • OldTFlyer

Its August when you start to question your choice of domicile. But to carry on the fight: at least Texas is one a few states to carry a surplus in its current budget period. Maybe Arnold will ask for a loan?

Now I declare a ceasefire and am prepared to offer terms.

  • pffft…builds character.

At least in SanDog there is an extremely low probability of ice/snow, etc.
BTW, I have applied at Northrup Grumman up there at Palmdale. Go figure. I figure I will be laid off from HBC in Wichita in early ’09. Our jet lines have already been slowing down. The heavy King Airs got a shot from the Air Force with 26 orders but the 90 had 30 plus cancellations already.
The desert sounds good. Sister-in-law w/family in Plamdale and sister-in-law w/family in Oceanside.

  • OldTFlyer

We can all expect to see many more layoffs come the new year. One hopes for the bottom to be in sight but fear the tip of the iceberg has only been exposed. Goverment related employment sounds like a safe harbor until you realize that, with the bailouts and all, there isn’t much else left standing.

Paying the piper is a real *itch.

Pffft. . .only a drama queen uses “Wind Chill” corrected temperatures. It’s a figure that cannot be measured by any instrument. It’s a subjective “feel” measure.

  • I use wind chill all the time in the summer… 110º with wind chill sounds so much better than 115º :-)

  • b2

What’s that chart mean? You’re gonna fly to DFW and have a tailwind? I don’t get it. LOL.

Are you thinking of going there and joining the Retro-Republic?

“We Texans love y’all, but we have decided to take action since Obama will soon be president. We’ll miss you, too.

Texas has given all those complainers plenty of time to get used to the results. After seeing all the whiners along the campaign route, the folks from Texas are taking matters into our hands.

    Here is our solution:

#1: Swear in Barak Hussein Obama President of the United States . (All 49 states.)

#2: George W. Bush comes home and becomes the President of the Republic Of Texas .

So what does Texas have to do to survive as a Republic?
    We are already set!

    1. NASA is just south of Houston , Texas . (We will control the space industry.)

    2. We refine over 85% of the gasoline in the United States .

    3. Defense Industry. (We have over 65% of it) The term ” Don’t mess with Texas ,” will take on a whole new meaning.

    4. Oil – we can supply all the oil that the Republic of Texas will need for the next 300 years. Yankee states? Sorry about that.

    5. Natural Gas – Again we have all we need and it’s too bad about those northern states. Obama will figure a way to keep them warm. …

    6. Computer Industry – we currently lead the nation in producing computer chips and communications: Small places like Texas Instruments, Dell Computer, EDS, Raytheon, National Semiconductor, Motorola, Intel, AMD, Atmel, Applied Materials, Ball Semiconductor, Dallas Semiconductor, Delphi, Nortel, Alcatel, Etc, Etc. The list goes on and on.

    7. Health Centers – We have the largest research centers for Cancer research, the best burn centers and the top trauma units in the world and other large health planning centers.

    8. We have enough colleges to keep us going: UT Texas, A&M, Texas T ech, Rice, SMU, University of Houston , Baylor, UNT, Texas Women ‘s University. Ivy grows better in the south anyway…

    9. We have a ready supply of workers.
(We can just open the border when we need some more.)

    10. We have control of the paper industry, plastics, insurance, etc.

    11. In case of a foreign invasion, we have the Texas National Guard and the Texas Air National Guard . We don’ t have an army but since every body down here has at least six rifles and a pile of ammo, we can raise an army in 24 hours if we need it. If the situation really gets bad, we can always call Department of Public Safety and ask them to send over a couple Texas Rangers.

    12. We are totally self sufficient in beef, poultry, hogs and several types of grain, fruit and vegetables and lets not forget seafood from the gulf. And everybody down here knows how to cook them so that they taste good. Don’ t need any food.

This just names a few of the items that will keep the Republic Of Texas in good shape. There isn’t a thing out there that we need and don’t have.

Now to the rest of the United States under President Obama: Since you won’ t have the refineries to get gas for your cars, you will have to walk or ride bikes.

You won’ t have any TV as the space center in Houston will cut off your communications. You won’ t have any natural gas to heat your homes but since Al Gore has predicted global warming, you will not need the gas.

    Signed,

    The People of Texas”

    It’s just a joke Flit…

  • OldTFlyer

    B2:

    I don’t get the joke. I was hoping it was a plan….

  • SJBill

Here in Cal, we have President Pelosi. Ask her.

  • Wilko

Oh yeah. Well we have sub zero temperatures, snow, Blagojevich, rust belt manufacturing and …did I say snow?
Wait the president elect came from here and so did Bill Ayers and uh
    …never mind.
    Do you have any vacancies?

  • MissBirdlegs in AL

I got that Texas joke 3 or 4 weeks ago, so I’m ahead of y’all with my application. I’ll put in a good word for you though. ;-)

Lex, that wind chill map looks awful, but we had almost 70 as a high on Saturday, cold Sunday, colder still Monday, but back to near 70 tomorrow. We need that cold to kill a few bugs… and it doesn’t last long enough to buy a coat. Just layer upon layer of clothes.

  • craig mclaughlin

Dang, Bob, you make it sound so good I think I’ll write G.T.T. on my door and light out.

  • Oh, right! What’s a little weather, manly pilot guy? So a little chilly winter weather makes your nads shrink up somewhere around your Adam’s apple?

On second thought, maybe Texas is too tough for ya Lex. You’re right. Stay in San Diego where the taxes are 7 times higher, the houses 10 times more expensive while at the same time 4 times smaller.

Somehow I thought a guy who spent his time in storm and tempest flying off flight decks pitching ten/twenty feet at a cycle was made of sterner stuff than to be afraid of a little weather. I mean, hey! We ain’t talking Buffalo, NY here!

But what do I know? I just live here and I used to live there (Tierrasanta).

B2, Re your comment #11 above… Is your supervisor, assuming…

    a) you actually have one …and

    b). you’re not demented and permanetly institutionalized…
…aware of the fact that you are/have been…ah… shall we say… “f**king the duck” … to this extent on company time?…Please Advise. Best

  • Big D

b2: One thing we lack, however, is missile silos. All we have is B-1s.

Lex: I’ve worn shorts on Christmas Day. Being at the bottom end of the Great Plains means that you get to put up with some of what everybody to the N/NNW of you has to go through, particularly the constant changes as the weekly cold fronts blow through, but at least it’s somewhat moderated by distance by the time it gets here.

Still more than worth the trade for the taxes, economy, housing, and character, though. :)

I was in DC a couple years back, and took a walk down Embassy Row. It was nice to see all the various nations there.

There was the British Embassy, the French Embassy, the Cambodian Embassy, the Texas Embassy… wait..

If Texas decides to go that route, let me know. I’ll be right down as soon as I can clear up some biddness here in the wilds of Maine.

  • OldTFlyer

    AW 1 Tim:

    Your passport application is waiting….

  • Ray

A bit farther south down in Houston the high yesterday was about 35, today we hit 70. You can enjoy the seasons…….all of ‘em in a couple days!

  • AW1 Tim

    Heh,

Up here in Maine we got 2 seasons. Winter, and the 4th of July.

Or, as some wags say, we got 9 months of winter and 3 months of damned poor sledding. :)

My dad’s line traces back through Bexar County in the 1850′s, and truth be told, I’m the first male actually born NORTH of the Mason Dixon line on his side of the clan.

  • Bruce Jones

    B2,

Re #1: You say that as if it were a good thing.

Re #11: Don’t forget Chuck Norris, Texas Ranger.

    Nyuck Nyuck.

  • Brian

We had a heat wave here today…almost hit 30 and the wind chill was above 0. Only had to shovel for about 20 min this morning.

    Build’s character…

  • GreyGoat

    AW1 Tim,

I thought Maine had three seasons: Winter, Mud and Construction.

  • Brian

Sorry…that’s SW Wisconsin. It’s snowing again. Anyone got an extra shovel?

  • Quartermaster

I guess living in Dago has got Lex all gone soft on us. A little brisk weather builds manly type Americans. Dago weather apparently builds Cali Metrosexuals from retired NavAviators pretty quick.

I have in my possession a Confederate Passport signed by the legitimate Secretary of State. Would such be acceptable, at least in refugee terms, south of the Red River? I may need to know pretty soon. Just in case, ya know?

But then, if the Confederacy regains its senses, I may only need to renew.

  • MaxDamage

-8 right now (it’s been warming up), 30-kn0t wind from the north-west. They say that means a whine-chill index of about 30 below, as if anybody runs around nekked this time of year and cares what the index says.

So I’m having a bit of difficulty seeing where Dallas weather is a constraint. I mean, look on the bright side — you could be looking for a job in Minneapolis.

  • Up here in Maine we got 2 seasons. Winter, and the 4th of July.

Heh. In Alaska, we had ‘winter’ and ‘construction’.

  • Zane

AW1 Tim, we won’t hold it against you that your folks was from away.

    And you forgot Mud Season.

  • A-T-One

When I was in Bwick in the early ’70s, we had a Portland TV weather guesser (Bob Orrill) whose most common guess was partly cloudy. I shoveled anywhere from two to twenty-four inches of “partly cloudy” in my four winters there.

  • Zane

Bob Orrill, my gosh, now there’s a memory. In living plaid.

And now I can’t remember his name, signing off nightly from Mt Washington, but who could forget that smile!

  • OldT6Pilot

    Q’master:

Confederate passports are acceptable for entry. If Texas Republic should rise again it will be valid to establish citizenship.

    Come on down…bring powder.

  • b2

    Snake,

b- I are permanently “institutionalized”, sorta.

a- Supervisor- who dat? (Cmon Scrooge you can grant me a lousy 15-20 minutes a day entertainment, cantcha?)

More maladroit malaprops for ye. We all live in our own little “Texas’s”, even you, you old Pecker-Wood. Merry Christmas, Yankee Grinch!

    b2

  • Snake Eater

B2, Many thanks for the kind words…
…and a very Merry Christmas to you and your fellow inmates. Best

Say what you will about Texas vs. California weather, but here is what happened on Sid’s Day Off…

Thats a friend’s cherry (literally) C-180 who suggested a little jaunt over to Stephenville to sample a bit of the heart stopping fare at the Hard Eight; a 3 minute golf cart ride away:

So…one metar does not tell the whole story!

  • Quartermaster

See what you’re missing Lex? The South be the place to be! Increasingly, the only sane part of the country.

T6 – what kinda powder? Ball, IMR or Austin?
