Making friends and influencing people in the Af.
The Afghan chieftain looked older than his 60-odd years, and his bearded face bore the creases of a man burdened with duties as tribal patriarch and husband to four younger women. His visitor, a CIA officer, saw an opportunity, and reached into his bag for a small gift.
Four blue pills. Viagra.
“Take one of these. You’ll love it,” the officer said. Compliments of Uncle Sam.
The enticement worked. The officer, who described the encounter, returned four days later to an enthusiastic reception. The grinning chief offered up a bonanza of information about Taliban movements and supply routes — followed by a request for more pills.
Whatever works, I guess.
None of his four wives could be reached for comment.

Uh huh.
Yeah, no comment. That’s probably for the best. We’ll just leave it like that.
Actually, come to think about it, that little ditty was about touching a lot more than hearts and minds, now wasn’t it?
Was it the Allman Brothers who did a song like the following?
“Gosh Darn, the pusher man”!
I’m glad we still have Men working for the Company. No doubt this smart operator will get comdemnation instead of a commendation.
Actually, it was a smart move to appeal to the chieftains other “needs”
That young officer needs a promotion and a “get out of the Pentagon free” card for whenever they decide to send him to the five sided wind tunnel.
Wow. Thats creative.
Intelligence collection: usually, it doesn’t involve martinis and car chases.
Didn’t even *one* of the sheikh’s wives say, but what about *my* needs? Something hinky here.

Marianne, please tell me you’re kidding…
“Making friends and influencing people in the Af.”
Hard work, it is.
Marianne,
I don’t even know how to go about informing you that in this part of the world, Women are “Property” much like livestock. In fact, The Sheikh paid at least 8,000 dollars for each of his “Wives”
Reminds me of a quote from the South East Asian War Games: “When you have them by the b@11$, their hearts and minds will follow.”
“Close enough for government work” in this case….
DC Cat–I believe the group you seek to name is Steppenwolf, however the chemical composition & end results do differ to some degree, your mileage may vary.
Four wives, four little blue pills. Okay so far, but who does the Afghani see when his “condition/proportion” is still there four hours later?
Better living through modern chemistry!

casey and unkawill … of course I’m kidding. What continues to fascinate me is how many of American “liberal” women simply ignore the fact that Muslim women are “chattel” and not allowed to have any individual opinions at all, much less any personal freedom. This is the unspoken truth which must not be recognized, for fear that it will destroy liberal efforts to impose the false notion that “oh. they’re just like we are,” on a credulous American public… you know, we folks who live in “flyover country.”
I’m not buying it.
Marianne
I think Kipling would have approved. “You’re a better man in bed now, Gunga Din”, and all that sort of rot.
You would be surprised how often this is requested.
My jaw dropped the first time the local Mullah asked about help with his “magical energy.”
It was a deal maker though – the medicine was delivered and the government project for his villagers was supported as “God’s will.”
That’s how it is done. Oh yeah – no sensible Afghan advocates three wives much less four.
Marianne: I figured, but I wasn’t completely sure.
Although, in a way, they are a bit like we are. Rather, like many Christian Europeans were (say) 500 years ago. It’s not really a surprising point of view, considering their cultural and (more importantly) technological standing. Iron age, muscle-driven societies are very much male-dominated.
I feel compelled to point out that Steppenwolf’s original lyric was not “Gosh Darn the Pusher-man”. And the title is just Pusher Man.

Mysogynistic evil doing aside, it does seem that the Chieftain gets the point. I’m sure the four “wives” hope for eternal priapismic pain on the Chieftain, however, we all know deep down inside he’s always been a prick.
Whatever gets the job done, I guess.
