Welcome Back

Welcome back to the land of your birth, Ms. Rivera. The land that sheltered you, educated you and offered you opportunities which were bounded only by the effort you put forth applying yourself to. The land whose constitution you voluntarily swore an oath to support and defend against enemies foreign and domestic. Which oath you subsequently broke.

Canada has ordered the deportation of the first woman US soldier to have sought asylum in the country to avoid being deployed to Iraq.

Kimberly Rivera, a mother of three, had requested permission to remain in Canada on humanitarian grounds but her appeal was rejected.

She could face up to five years in prison when she returns to the US…

Mrs Rivera served in Iraq in 2006 but deserted a year later after refusing to be redeployed.

I wonder, as I always do, which patriot filled the hole she left behind? Who it was that had earned a break and didn’t get it. Or who it was that bore the burden of two in a far and inhospitable place, because someone who enlisted in the service in a time of war decided to spread the risk of service on the backs of others.

No knock on the Great White Up, but do you ever notice how no one ever deserts to Mexico?

“…but do you ever notice how no one ever deserts to Mexico?”

Well, the San Patricios once did.

But of course, that was a very long time ago.

  • Mexico kinda falls short in the public handouts department. Plus the Mexican media will not lionize them like we do up here.

  • Well, at least we gave her back. Which is the proper thing, I think.

So why don’t they go to Mexico? That’s where I would head. For the beaches. It’s @$@@! freezing up here!

  • Good on Canada for making her face her crimes at home.

    disenfranchise.

    shun.

    that is all.

  • Didn’t Cpl Cesar Laurean desert to Mexico?

The Great White North/Up took some justifiable heat for their actions during the VN war…it’s still a no-go topic for me with my Canadian in laws…the policy change is most welcome … thank you Canada. Best

PS, Scott, as I recall Cpl Cesar Laurean, for obvious reasons, did desert to Mexico.

They oughta assign her duty at GITMO! 5 years there would certainly be punishment. Leavenworth would be soft duty by comparison.

Get her in her dress uniform, in front of as many servicemembers, preferably those who have made the trip to the Sandbox, strip her of her decorations, achievements and rank, cut her buttons off, and hand her the Big Chicken Dinner. See ya, wouldn’t want to be ya.

    Friends,

This blog entry at a place I visit regukary, gives a lot of background information on the soldier in question and her family.

To say that he hubby is a loser’s loser is an understatement of amazing proportions. the sad part is dragging her kids into this, but if you realize that the entire relationship began with both working at the local WalMart, you can see how this might be a natural ending to the Affaire D’Couer…

The longer I live, I become more certain that, with a few exceptions, it’s all genetic make-up and pre-disposition. Some are eager to serve, some serve in spite of mis-givings/fears, etc. And while many resist out of religious conscious, for many more (most) political opposition or confused thinking is, I believe, only a cover–or perhaps a natural outgrowth–of their psychological make-up. Why, for example, do some poor blacks from the “hood” go on to become PhDs while their friends living under the same conditions become gang-bangers? I’m sure parental guidance, teachers, mentors, coaches, etc., and religion play no small part–but how does it explain great divergences within families? To me it all comes back to genetic pre-disposition.

Although, as AW1Tim’s WalMart citation above suggests, lots of types like this poor soul are truly adrift in society, with few mooring posts available to keep them from being tossed about aimlessly on the sea of life. as it were. So for those without the genetic pre-disposition perhaps it is all “nurture”/social environment after all.

PS: I should add that science is slowly confirming my viewpoint by producing studies suggesting that whether one becomes a conservative or liberal or not is strongly influenced by genetics. In fact there is a raging debate currently going on within Univ. Sociology Depts as to whether to admit of the impact of genetic factors (which has up until now long been studiously rejected by sociologists.)

It has always seemed logical to me; if genetics dictates everything else–personality[introvert-extrovert], voice timbre, IQ levels, etc., why not genetic predisposition to the sort of values encompassed by conservative or liberal politics?

PPS: If they draft me in my next life I just may head for the land of Sauza Gold and
    advocate/cheer on, a 100% female force
and enjoy the shoe on the other foot for a change as I lay prone on sandy beaches!

Virgil, go ahead and lie on that beach of gold.

My daughter will ignore you. You’re not on her radar, not part of the mission.

Which at this point is mastering the sippy cup.

Kind of lends some perspective to our goals?

I left a comment on the BBC web page that this post points to… yesterday. Went back and checked it today to see if others had commented in the same direction. Golly gee whiz… I don’t think they are gonna post a conservative opinion. I just don’t get it, it’s the BBC after all…

Oh, ok I get it now.
