Curtiss,

Yup... it aint so much the couple hundred thousand leaving that's the problem. It's WHICH couple hundred thousand that is the difference maker.

If it's the couple hundred still paying taxes, then the state has a bit of a sticky wickett on their hands.....

I wonder. How many of us have experienced an epiphany? They can't be all that rare since they seem to happen all the time but how often does the sled dog suddenly decide that running along with his nose up the butt of the dog in front of him sucks and decide to call it a day and change jobs? Some call this the basis for emigration.

There are a few who poo poo the notion that a few hundred thousand fleeing the state are meaningless and lost in the sheer mass of the 38 million remaining but that always puts me back in the days when my brother used to return to my apartment and tell me that Home Fed had just written off another 2% of unperforming loans. Week after week he would announce that his bank had written off X% of loans. I used to wonder how long a bank could survive if it kept up this sort of performance. (This was back in the late 80's as the S&Ls were crashing and banks were being urged by the FED to buy them/save them).

My brother went on to fame and fortune as a Home Fed Branch Manager until, iirc, HF bought some S&Ls at the urging of the FED and, when the rules for bank reserves changed, found themselves short of reserves and was itself, seized by the Fed.

I think the latest numbers I saw said that the top 5% of wage earners paid either 60 or 90% of the taxes. Either way, if the emigres are all from that 5%, the state is rapidly bleeding to death. How many of the most productive and valuable employees are opting to take retirement and move back to their home in Oregon or Arizona? My boss is.

The cratered real estate market here in CA means that the property tax bonanza is going to be underperforming just as all the municipal and state govs are realizing that their pension funds were destroyed by the financial collapse and that they are in serious trouble. Thank you to those that created Prop 13. A thousand blessings on your heads Mr Jarvis and all the rest of you that supported it. A state with a $42 billion deficit. That's not the budget, that's the deficit! And since government always lies that means the real deficit is closer to a $100 billion! And nobody here in California ever hears a peep about it. It's just not important.

Flit, you dance around the issue, like most socialists. The business owner is caught in the middle, and it is unjust. The owner paid the price in blood and sacrifice, and the left wants to punish him because he's too selfish to give it all away. He's supposed to run all the risk, and then get nothing for it. You may protest otherwise, but he paid the price and the firm is his. period. He owes the government only what they need to do their job, and not a penny more. If you want to see what the government is authorized to do, read the constitution. The left does what it wants to and pays lip service to the document, but suddenly discovers it when it breaks their way.

To boil it all down, the left, and the Government monster it spawned, is lawless.

His company isn't failing. He's just tired of being taxed to death. The only direction that will work is for FedGov to get back into the cage the founders built for it.

Smart power is another one of those empty words the left will employ when they don't know what they are doing. Billary never did know what they were doing, and Bill was a moral coward. Hillary didn't mind being along for the ride. The decline will not end as long we are on the path we are on, and the left has no intention of getting off the path of decline. It is their philosophies that have us on this path.

History is laughing at you Flit. You are as naive as all the other idealistic leftists I've met.

You may want to accuse me of ranting, but at least I don't rave as the moonbat gang does. I'm fully in contact with reality and my cognitive abilities are unimpaired and engaged. I have yet to see any moonbat remain in contact with reality. Even when it's rubbed in their faces.

You are welcome Tim. What is in that letter is why I'm not in business anymore. I can work hard and not have so much stolen from me simply by being a worker bee. If I were Mike Crowley. I would sell out now, and get while his firm has value, because when the Obamination takes office, it's going to be Katy bar the door. Hes gonna finish what FDR and all the liberals since then have kept up and that firm will be worthless. He's going well now, but that will change soon.

#43 Tnx, QM. That letter was quite a long rant. I too have run a business, and I can share M. A. Crowley's frustrations.

However, while he may make a few valid points along with mistakes in his letter, I have never, ever seen a missive from the boss to his productive workers of an organization with so many "I"s and "my"s. I didn't count them, but it was all "I" and "me". There are also a number of separatist, "your"s.

What was so conspicuously absent in that long letter rant is that there are no, "our"s. Not a one!

Are they not all of the same company working toward a mutual, "our" goal? Or is his company split and thus weakened?

When blaming others for his failing company, maybe the boss should look into his (I love me) mirror for his lack of leadership qualities as to one of the reasons his company may be failing.

There are many factors involved in our failing businesses and growing unemployment. It's a little late to blame and control the culprits. It's time to change direction. But it will be difficult with the combined 16 years of economic policies of Clinton and then Bush.

And regarding soft vs. hard power, prospective Sec/State Clinton coined a great new word today – "smart power." Either power alone is weak. Combined, soft and hard power is far more effective. Perhaps our long period of discontent – and nations' decline - may soon end.
