Another Anthropological Experiment

“Ambassador” Akbar Ahmed and his retinue venture into the heart of darkness in Arab, Alabama. A young lady dresses up in Muslim mufti, and “hopes there isn’t any violence” in a town almost composed almost entirely of white people facing foreigners of color.

There isn’t, of course.

Counterpoint.

Thus, cultural equivalence.

I almost feel the need to apologize about the legacy of imperialism, and so on.

Almost.

We’re no better than them. In fact, we’re all racists, while “they” are just innocent “victims”. Indeed, Helen Thomas pointed out they are only “so-called” terrorists, during BHO’s inaugural news conference, bless her little-ol’ cotton socks.

  • Marianne Matthews

Helen Thomas appears to be deep into Alzheimer’s and should have retired long ago. Being a doddering bore is not a good thing when you are over 80. [I know, and I try to avoid it.] Tony Snow, bless his ever gracious heart, could control her more embarrassing outbursts, but this smug new guy can’t control anything.

By the way, did anyone notice how cranky Obama is getting in his public statements? It seems we’re due for the end of the world as we know it if we don’t do exactly as he says. Besides which we’re racist for resisting his coercion and trying to retain our own independent viewpoints.

As another commenter here pointed out, it’s going to be a loong four years. Sigh …

  • That is cause there is nothing to do in Arab Alabama………..

    NOT.. ONE… DAMN…. THING.

Even the outlet malls are almost gone………..

  • Larry Sheldon

Others said it before I did, but I’ll say it here:

How about dressing her up as Sarah Palin, and the two males as Texans, and take them to the University campus of their choice.

If they are stll alive after that take them to California and vist the PRB.’

And then…..naw, they probably won’t do any more…

  • I got the clutch in my Chevy Vega replaced in Arab, Alabama, back in the early seventies. I provided them with the shop manual, and they tried to steal it. Go too far from Huntsville or Mobile, and I have a low opinion of Alabama. Still the most-free place to live, IF YOU HAVE MONEY. I don’t. It’s the state in which it sucks the most to be poor, except maybe MS or FL.

    THE key word, “Almost.”

  • Gmac

I’ve lived here in Huntsville since ‘63. All I’ve got to say is those people that made the ‘documentary’ are bigots.
Arab may have had its moments back in the 50’s and early 60’s but those people are dead and gone, just like the attitudes they fostered.

    Larry,
Forgive my bluntness, but your understanding of what it is to walk on a college campus (or in California) shows you to be as wrong-headed in your understandings as the bozos trying to tweak people’s noses in Alabama.

Walk down Sproul Plaza at my university and you will see the entire universe of political causes–from far left to far right–and every religious group imaginable with their recruitment tables set up, and students at every one. There were plenty of Palin/McCain (yes, in that order) mixed in with the Obama/Biden…not huge amounts, I’ll admit; but no one got any cr*p for it.

I’m a big advocate for people actually travelling back and forth to these different places to see for themselves…nothing like travelling the country to see how much we all still have in common…haven’t been to a state yet where I found the entire population to be loathsome (though I admit, I’ve only been to 38, there may be a stinker in the last 12).

  • OldT6Flyer

    Laurie:

Im my travels to a whole bunch of states (haven’t counted but proply at least equaly your 38) and a number of countries that number in the double digits I’ve always found ost people to be quite acceptable and accepting. Its the damn governments that put me off…

What does that tell me? Still wonderin’

Arab, AL? Paris, AL? What is it with AL, couldn’t they think up their own town names years ago? In the interest of world diversity and cultural appreciation why not dress the gal up as an orthodox Jew and run her thru the tribal areas in Pakistan or even downtown Riyadh. True acceptance there. OT6 was right – MOST people are generally accepting, its that 10% we are constantly fighting.

  • GaMongrel

The only politically correct fun left to have is at the expense of rural, presumably uneducated and inbred southerners.

LOL – OMG! People wearing camoflauge! Must be a right wing cultist!

How is this ‘clip’ different from what we’re exposed to every day by hollywood and the national media? I take it back, actually, this clip is a marked improvement over our usual treatment.

Yeah, dress some little girl up as an Orthodox Jew and have her run through the slums of Paris… Imagine the tolerance!

  • I found it interesting that one local young lady freely admitted that she didn’t recognize the Arab attire Ms. Woldt wore, saying she “wasn’t very educated” about such things.

This in opposition to the automatic assumption of knowledge of the documentary makers.

What was really funny was that the town was supposed to be named Arad Thompson, son of the founder Stephen Thompson. Apparently the Post Office screwed up the name back in 1882… ;)

  • Laurie — That “acceptance of diversity of thought” thing doesn’t appear to work at the University of Vermont.

Good for the university, it’s about time these war mongering neo-cons got shut out.

…the FaveJew of the NeoChristos. Even my mother loves him

…it is the duty of civilized society to not give that sort of ignorant bullcrap any credibility.

I think you are entitled to your INFORMED opinion, but drool and drivel aren’t opinions, they’re just saliva and chatter.

You see, we are blocking thoughts we don’t agree with, for only the best intentions. No one can question that.

  • Laurie

Well, I was always glad I didn’t go to UVM…too many crazy white people up there. Snark.

  • Snake Eater

UVM, That self-reverent cess-pool of left wing bull-sh*t political correctness has certaintly come a long way since it’s so-called ” Infamous Kake Walk”…. days … duly abolished by the smart set in 1969. Best

PS, Ben Stein is a certified smart, occasionally amusing, hypochondriacal yenta ( read harmlessly annoying pain in the ass). His “Ben Stein’s Diary” is a monthly fixture in The American Spectator. It’s a must read for me if only to confirm my opninion of him… although I don’t think he deserved this kind of shabby treatment.

  • Quartermaster

Almost? For me it isn’t even close. The Paks are making a very good argument for the return of imperialism.

  • StewartTheArabian

I found it very interesting that the place they chose to test their theories on Arab… was Son’s, the best pork BBQ restaurant in town.

I wonder what the Muslims were eating?

    (I’m MissBirdLegs son, btw)

  • Curtis

    Welcome Stewart!
I liked living in Huntsville while I was in high school there. It was all sailing, water skiing, hiking, caving, partying and rappelling from anything more than 40 feet off the ground. Then we moved to New Jersey… yuk.
