Needs More Moderation

I thought I was impressed to learn that an Iranian drone may have been shot down over Iraq by the US.

Then I read the comments.

And some of you wonder why I comments are moderated?

There’s an awful lot of stupid, out there.

  • We have lost so many. The education system and the press have so thoroughly indoctrinated them that they cannot see any other view of the world.

“The decline of Rome was the natural and inevitable effect of immoderate greatness. Prosperity ripened the principle of decay; the cause of the destruction multiplied with the extent of conquest; and, as soon as time or accident and removed the artificial supports, the stupendous fabric yielded to the pressure of its own weight. The story of the ruin is simple and obvious: and instead of inquiring why the Roman Empire was destroyed we should rather be surprised that it has subsisted for so long.”
    –Edward Gibbon

  • Frankly, the comments are not just stupid, they are very scary.

Just found the blog…keep up the good work.

My goodness, I would recommend a large dose of prozac dissolved in rum

  • Wow… now I know what filters are for – to strain out the [poop]!

    Transcript:
Pilot: “I didn’t hit it very hard, it must have had a self destruct.”
    Base: “An Iranian probe droid.”
Pilot: “It’s a good bet the theocracy knows we’re here.”

Heh. I love Star Wars references.

    My concerns are twofold:
    1. those raving lunatics vote

    2. those raving lunatics reproduce.

appreciate the filtered responses on this blog so that the discussions remain germane, gentile, and civilized.

  • Ron

G-Man, if we could take care of the second item, the first would soon solve itself.

  • saffer

    G-man,

    I believe you meant “genteel”.

  • Nose

Oy Gevalt! Now you should want for me to be genitle?

  • Byron

Nose, did you really mean to say this?:

“Now you should want for me to be genitle?” :)

you beat me to it. the BBU (blonde bombshell unit) has taken upon herself to make me caffeine free, and I’m about ready to launch. I was in no way referring to one’s religious affiliation.

The troops at work know to stay away until at least 10 or so.

    a thousand gomen nasai’s.

Merely proves the old adage, beauty is only skin deep, but stupid goes right down to the bone!

  • I’m glad I don’t get stuff like that on my blog…. better to be somewhat anonymous…

I’m totally geeking out over the Star Wars comment! There are a few smart, witty readers out there!

  • Actually having read that blog off and on, the loons seem to drift in from the Wired part of the universe. Any Iraq, middle -east themed post seems to set them off where you can always count on a few Bush=Hitler remarks to lighten things up.

A couple of the writers over there have a sort of anti-party line tone to their writing style which probably encourages those types of individuals as well.

Personally I can’t read too much of it…my blood pressure and computer screen couldn’t take too much of that.

  • Idaho Joe

I wonder if those people commenting know that drone pilots aren’t killed when the drone is destroyed? Probably some were trying for sarcasm, but it looked weird.

And do you think somebody told the pilot, “Good shooting kid, now don’t get cocky.”?

  • Madconductor

Dropped down to the bottom of the list to see if the banter got more intelligent. It didn’t. But a guy named “Mike” was at least reasonable and linked to an old CBS news item of the Predator prior to the 2003 invasion. Of course CBS, in their infinite “I’m better than you are” point of view, noted the “single biggest failure” of the 1991 war was shooting down SCUD missiles. That’s all they could remember. The “single biggest failure”.

I’m sure the Host & IP address visual traceroute tools all point back to the Middle East as source. Probably all grads of Ivy League Institutions of Higher Indoctrination.

  • Schroedinger's Cat

I wonder how many of those incendiary comments are posted by kids in their parent’s basement that don’t get enough attention and have figured out that comment-bombing cr@p like that always gets lots of responses.

  • Um wow – anyone got any mind floss?

  • Danger

Wow! I mean, really: WOW! Everything suddenly seems so peaceful and in order over here in Lex’s world.

That first post set the tone and they were off to the races. Problem was it was a short round track and the trolls just kept going round and round in the same circle.
Reminds me of the Jetson’s: “Jane, get me off this crazy thing!”

Thanks Lex, I am sure we all appreciate the filters even more now. Sheesh! Such language!

  • hornetgunner

    Lex,
I read your blog daily along with a number of others and also get all of my news from the web (except for the O’Reilly Factor). Yours is the best blog out there. Why? As a vet I enjoy the amount of military related postings on your blog. Our views on culture and society are quite similar and I greatly enjoy the way in which you put them to script. I also love the great comments that your readers contribute. Truly, the icing on the cake is nature of the comments. The overall tone is one of constructive, congenial and humurous critique and opinion. There are too many comments sections out there filled with nasty, bitter, kill-the-messenger, teenage vitriol.

Yours, meu querido Capitão-de-mar-e-guerra, I read with my second cup of jo’ and great anticipation and relish; then I’m good to go.

    Thank you, Lex et al

    • Hornetgunner,
      Two things:
First, I am going to adopt this “Capitão-de-mar-e-guerra” moniker for myself ‘cuz it sounds so frappin’ cool.
Second, why wait til the second cup? Or is it b/c the first serves to pry your eyes open?

You hit the nail on the head about the “vote & reproduce” bit. It’s the same feeling I get every time I watch Jerry Springer (PURE trash–God help me I love it so!) to see what’s up with the “flotsam and jetsam” of life. (I draw the line at Maury Povitch, however)

And the helluva it is, they all seem to be such PROLIFIC breeders, too. ‘Course the one consolation we have is that the geeky “Wired” types mate attraction quotient is undoubtedly approaching a negative number, so we don’t have to worry so much about the “reproduction” bit from them. Now if we could only find a body signature heat-seeking solution to the voting part….

  • Comjam

    Lex:
I made the mistake of trying to add knowledge to a post about aircraft maintenance rates on first-tour aircraft by posting on Danger Room. Once. Entertaining enough, but it’s like trying to have a rational conversation on military.com, or teaching COMSEC to airdales: It’s a waste of your time and only annoys the dog. I’ll just stay here in the back of the Ready Room, thanks.

    Best,
    Comjam

NOTE to all the Navy types: This being a Navy blog and me being an ex-bus driver, notice how I manage to toss around nautical terms like “flotsam and jetsam” occasionally just to keep on your good side and make me seem like one of the boys? Come on, show me the luv with a few “atta-boys” huh?

    • OK… here’s some luv, Virg, from another retired Zoomie. So the luv prolly doesn’t mean a whole helluva lot, considering the source. But it’s the thought, right? ;)

  • F4Jock

So if the lucky fellow or mam that shot it down gets four more does that make them an “Ace”?

  • Complete with quote marks, likely…

  • Quartermaster

    VX,

Speaking as a Zoomie’s brat who rebelled and went into the Navy, the main theme here seems to be up a Zoomie’s alley. True, the host holds retired Naval rank, but he was part of the Naval Air Force, so all seems cool. The uniform was just a different shade of blue.

In the interests of interservice comity (and the risk of the moderator’s tender touch) I won’t include some of the names some of my Naval Instructors applied to our Santiago Blue clad colleagues.

  • unkawill

At least our trolls are literate, unlike my self.

  • It’s like that article that Lex had awhile back about recognizing various sorts of internet trolls – this would be the place to find them all, I reckon.

    2 questions for Lex:

    1. How much filtering does it really take to keep your site from looking like that?
    2. If you shoot down 5 drones, does that make you an ace?

  • Potosi Joel

“2. If you shoot down 5 drones, does that make you an ace?”

I think it makes your airplane an ace, without you. ship v ship; pilot v pilot.

  • virgil xenophon

    Quartermaster/

Not to worry–t’was all tongue in cheek to pass the time away–don’t really need no “luv”–just glad to be tolerated, if only barely (heh) BTW, always been enamored of the term “flotsam and jetsam.” A very colorful descriptive expression I’ve heard since I’ve been old enough to remember. I’ve got a mental picture of the flotsam stuff, but what’s jetsam? I could Google but would rather hear it from a Squid (heh, heh)

Don’t be so damned literal, we were having too much fun with it…..spoil sport. :)

  • What is the ‘flying rubber DogS..t out of Hong Kong’ (TopGun movie quote)? Is that the USAF equivalent? :-)
