Lex, you did “cool” very well in those days. The mustache helped, of course.

And I don’t want to sound like a doubter about the ‘best fighter pilot’ thing – but I was thinking at the outset that you were being pretty darned brave to show film of you passing out during this experience….silly me. I mean, every one of these I’ve ever seen has the victim, I mean aviator, passing out, so I expected that it happens to everyone. Oops.

  • John

You did, of course, mean no passing out during *that* particular session, right? ;)

In any case, you’re still plenty brave enough for posting this for all the world to enjoy.

  • FbL

I had the same thought as Steve until I actually saw it (figured this was the video about which comments have been made ’round here, the one where you do pass out). ;)

Best part? “I’m fine. And you?” LOL!

IIRC, former antagonist and occasional ‘liberal’ commenter here, “Our Paul” served in some medical capacity at that place with the centrifuge you rode. But it was probably long before your time.

More recently (2007), Air & Space magazine had a very interesting article on that same centrifuge you rode. It was built for the original Mercury Astronauts. One even claimed “32 G’s.” But I suppose astronauts exaggerate, just like Naval Aviators. Ya think? :-)

  • Ahhh – must be fun in the alternate consciousness machine. You are a good ‘sport’ Lex. Thanks for the laffs. You must have been channeling “Hogan’s Goat”?: http://www.geocities.com/capecanaveral/7553/hgoat.htm

  • ‘Sport’ meaning here: [Note I did not say: "Av-a-go-ya-mug"] http://www.byrononlineguide.com/byron_bay_online_slang/

  • Is there an ‘high altitude chamber’ training video? For the hypoxia innit.

    • I’m just not sure I can watch anymore of the “pr0n ‘stache” if you know what I mean…

      • virgil xenophon

Yeah, XBrad, (chuckle) I just KNEW that ‘stache reminded me of something…..just couldn’t quite put my finger on it…gettin’ slow on the uptake, I guess…A younger Ron Jeramy, maybe? :)

    • virgil xenophon

I dunno ’bout the Navy, Spaz, but in my day every-time we did it in the USAF it was a “group-grope” thing with one patsy picked out as the test-dummy while the rest of us–after “safely” experiencing the effects for a minimal amount of time, resume masks and sit around in the chamber and observe (laugh) at the poor guy picked out to make a fool of himself trying to put the wooden puzzle pieces back together as/until merciful nature takes it’s course in our demonstration/
      object lesson.

      • VX: Exactly – we did our training with RAAF with same effect. I wish I had have known what the ‘funky chicken’ meaning was at that time. & BeanzMeanzFartz.

  • Pretty danged cool, ‘stache and all!

And just how did the film come into your possession, Lex? Enquiring Minds™ wanna know!

  • Dust

Ah, yes, Lex. Back when your skin had elasticity. Those were indeed the days! :)

  • G-man

    “O wonder!
How many goodly creatures are there here!
How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world
That has such people in’t!” -’stache and all.

Where was the proctologist during all this testing?

    • AW1 Tim

I don’t think he’s old enough yet to be Prospero, though he has an appropriate daughter to play Miranda. :)

You can always tell the men who have daughters, for they grey early and tend to have a vacant stare from time to time…..

  • Marianne Matthews

Lex … You were the essence of “cool,” as always in the film. But I still like your looks better without the mustache. And I vote with Fbl that your response “I’m fine. And you?” is great theater, under trying circumstances.

    To be expected, of course.

    Marianne

  • Best part -
    Controller: “How ya doin?”
    Lex: “Like Hogan’s goat!”

    Bwahahaha…wait, what?

I, too, would love to know how you happened to come across this particular nugget of hilarity…

    • Not being familiar wit the origins of the term I consulted a handy reference source

Leave it to Lex to make artistic reference when under mild duress….

      • virgil xenophon

Not to be confused with Hogan’s Hero’s…..who also “got the goat” of their camp adversaries.. :)

        • virgil xenophon

But thinking further, Lex being a Navy grad of a certain trade school, thinkin’ ’bout “goats” must come second nature to him, ’cause he WAS one once his own young self.

      • T6-
While you’re technically correct, I believe that in the military vernacular any reference to Hogan’s goat is usually prefaced by the term “As f*’d up as…”

I don’t think any artistic reference was intended on Lex’s part…

      • FbL

Lex as a kept man, hunh?

        ROFL!

        *picks self up*

I think it’s perfectly appropriate. After all, I hear he has this habit of forgetting his wallet…

        *falls down laughing again*

  • Zane

Buck, the center mailed the tapes to the aviators at their squadrons. IIRC, we had some fun with this one before Lex found out we had it–twas you and Jekyll in a double-header. But Biff’s was better:

    Sir, you can relax now.

    Sir?

    Sir?

  • OldT6 beat me to it. That was priceless.

  • RonF

So I figured that the left hand graph was your heart. However, was the right hand trace the g-force or the amount of urine being deposited in your underpants?

  • Oyster

Lex. Dude. That was the greatest thing I’ve seen in quite awhile. I’m still wipe the tears out of my eyes. Yer killin’ me.

  • bc

Lex, thanks for sharing that! Only thing missing was the bounk-chicka-wow-wownk sampling, though Mr. Mathers was a nice touch.

And lest anyone forget, the fighter cool factor was never diminished (well, not to the marginally trained eye at least). Cuz it’s all about the cool. Well done; I’d have been out like a light.

  • Yeah – no drool – only drolleries. BZ.

  • Lex, I hope SNO makes it thru the pipeline, grows a ‘stache, and provides us with a comparative video – 20 yrs after his dear ol’ da.

  • b2

    Lex,

You defied gravity back in ’92! S.H. !

It’s all cummulative. The earth (and age) sucks. Now everything’s ‘falling’ ain’t it! LOL.
