    “reappointment to the grade…”

Has anyone ever not been reappointed to a grade they currently held?

  • lex

Some are asked to retire rather than be offered new assignments, and all 3- and 4- star officers must be confirmed in that rank by the Senate for retirement. Moving to a new billet, they must be confirmed in that rank if it is equal to or superior to the one they currently hold.

It’s a way for Congress – and the CNO – to keep egos in check, I believe.

Soon-to-be ADM Harvey drops in the USNI blog quite a bit. Said this morning that he has spent a fair amount of time on various blogs, and he always finds things that he wouldn’t hear in a staff meeting. Says that blogs are a must read. I expect one of them is your’n, sar ;)

  • It would all be nice and good-if were not counter balanced by one very, very, bad flag move: Willard going to PACOM.

So much for that hope from this blog on Sept 21 ,2006″ Admiral Willard will soon assume the status of a non-person.

    If only it were so.

  • Wondered if you flew with Admiral Walsh?

I never flew with him, he was east coast when I was west. Did go aboard his strike group when he was a one star. Sharp as a tack, a gentleman to work for and looked like he was maybe 22 years old.

      Knew he’d go far.

He was #3 and later slot with NFDS during the A-4 to F/A-18 transition. I was privileged to be a member of the maintenance team. If you thought he looked all of 22 when you went aboard, imagine that youthful grin back in 87-88. Saw him years later at a conference; of the youngest looking CAPTs I believe I ever saw.

  • I was in the same air wing with him. He’s a GREAT GUY and IMHO one of the smartest guys in the Navy today. His squadron was a reflection-they were a bunch of real professionals.

Pat was in my airwing on my second cruise (me being a seasoned second cruise guy, him a mere nugget :) ) — great guy, several post last recovery auto dog conversations in the dirty shirt. Like the current NAVEUR (who was in VCNO’s sister A7 sqd), it is good to see the truly good guys make it big.

But Lex, I figure you’d say that is just to be expected of a SSHWFGD.

Perhaps I’ve not been following as well as I should, but has Timbo retired? My understanding was that his retirement was to have occurred last month. Last year, he mentioned moving to our Bay Area, of all places.

I knew Locklear when he was a fresh caught Ensign, and even then he proved himself to be one most impressive officers I ever served with. Looks like he has done well. I trust that he will continue to do well, and do the right thing.

  • Skippy, Just curious, why do you think Adm. Willard to PACOM is a bad move? I haven’t heard a lot of bad things about him…

    • I was out in WESTPAC when he was both a one star and a three star-and watched the interaction of him with WESTPAC when he was CPF. I worked indirectly for him when he was a three star. Suffice it to say, I’m not a satisfied customer.

Most of what has been accomplished in the FDNF since he left has been about undoing the things he did while he was there.

    John
Known Sammy since high school- he comes from good stock. I figured he would have made 4 on this go-round. Not sure he will pick it up out of N09B, but like Walsh, he is an asset to keep in the USN.

  • I’d say DNS is a fairly good step towards a 4th star….

  • VADM J. C. Harvey, Jr

This blog is indeed one of the few I read in the morning scan I make with the first cup of coffee.
One of the unexpected benefits – I’ve learned more about flying small planes around moutains than I could ever imagine. So thanks for that Lex. All the best, JCHjr
