Ayo Ghurkali!

Considering the other folks that the UK tolerates as immigrants, it seems to me that this was a good decision:

Thousands of retired Ghurkas today were granted permission to move to the UK after the British government relented on its policy of denying the Nepalese soldiers automatic settlement rights.

Hard men, and good fighters, many of whom left everything behind to fight for Her Majesty.

Hard to understand why it took this long.

This is good news—long overdue. The reputation of the Ghurkas is incomparable. I can’t believe this situation was ever in question. Dear Heaven.

This probably would never have happened without the constant urgings and very brave public efforts of Joanna Lumley, an actress who obviously has a warrior’s heart. Those of us who hold the cause of these brave and loyal men dear to our hearts owe her a supreme debt of thanks.

In this case a single person–the right person–made all the difference.

Anyone who’s been reading Michael Yon will understand why this is so important. The contribution of the Ghurka soldier to the British Army is incomparable.

I am of the opinion that we should offer immediate US citizenship to any of the Ghurka soldiers who desire to emigrate to our shores, as well as to their families. They would be a welcome addition to our population.

PG, Yon is also where I became aware of the, seemingly, arbitrary timeline that the UK had initially allowed for Ghurka citizenship.

    Good news indeed.

  • Brave men indeed. Earlier this month I posted details of two VC holders, Tulbahadur Pun VC and Lachhiman Gurung VC, you can read it here: Ghurka Heroes .

Readers of a nervous disposition may wish to avoid the rest of the blog, we’re not too happy with our politicians these days.

Having lived overseas, seeing the Gurkhas first hand, and hearing their stories, it is unconscionable that it took so long. But, now that is has happened, it needs to be celebrated.

Perhaps they can clean out some Mosques in Birmingham and London.

  • Some deal of credit must go to Joanna Lumley. Not only have I had years of enjoyment watching this gifted comedienne, she put her “money where her mouth is” in her fight for Ghurka recognitition.

    Her website is here:
