But if it could have? :)

    • I just found the slides of two of us getting “frocked” to LT in the head (stalls in the background), pinned by the head dissident LT, due to the command’s inability to decide if they wanted us to come to the flight deck as JGs, or just be wearing LT already. Pete has a big smile. Have scanner with slide adapter available….one day…one day…

Cap’n, bet you wish you’d thought of it ;)

  • Totally fits Hubs’ style.

  • The key characteristics of the Navy are speed and adaptability, yah? No need to ease into retirement. Jump in with both flip flops.

  • Old Fat Sailor

I gave the OOD a quarter and told him, “Thanks for the ride.”

Who IS that Guy?! THAT’S the guy I want to party with!!

  • G-man

Now THAT is a brave guy, what with them legs and all.

  • I’m likin’ that big-ass beer truck in the background. Which wasn’t coincidence, methinks. :)

  • Mongo

    Way too cool.

There are no coincidences, Buck, only proper planning…

    Airdale, no doubt.

Fun at the time, I am sure, but somehow lacking class.

  • SJBill

I have a dear MSgt friend/relative, who was positively gobsmacked (I used it!) with the senior officer’s lack of respect for his full dress uinform.

The Airdale side of me thought balls triumphed over class. Nice exit strategy!

Wow, nice way to make sure you leave ‘em remembering you! I can tell you that October in Minnesota is NOT the place to wear flip-flops and aloha shirts. But I do confess to quoting the Grateful Dead in my retirement speech!

That’s Hubs. He perfected “Hitting the Long Ball” on liberty. He encouraged “Credit Card Roulette.”

He’s pretty much like that all the time.

Virgil- if you want to party with him, recommend you eat a loaf of bread first. Comjam, no chance anyone who knows/works for/works with Hubs would ever forget him.

Hubs was the CO of VRC-40, the east coast COD squadron. He turned over the squadron to another personality C/S “Bitch”. The change of command invite had three boxes to check:
    >I cannot attend
    >I will attend
    >I’m just amazed they gave either of these guys a squadron!

He is a great guy and universally loved. I don’t know anyone in the community who doesn’t like Hubs or have a good story about him.

      Nose/SJS:

The more I hear, the more I like. MY kinda guy, from the sounds of it. By what miracle did he EVER make it past O-3?

The big kids in the Navy must have developed a sense of humor the big kids in the AF NEVER had when I was in (which is why I’m out. LOL!)

    • Having been Rawhide JO around that era, all is true, most especially the part about being Hubs being universally loved.

One minor point of correction: Bitch (of “Road Crew” fame) passed the squadron to Hubs…and it was a golden age.

  • *ahem* a former Hummer guy & great stick, I might add, who is also a former Seabat (VAW-127). Skippy knows of him too and this is entirely in keeping w/Hubbs’ approach.
Lex – we flew a DACT mission vs. an F-16N @ Key West back in the early 90′s as part of a validation of defensive tactics for the E-2. I was the stunt mole in back, Hubbs up front in the left seat. It was — interesting, for both us and the F-16.

    Correction: ceremony in 2009.

Ohhhh Lex, you’re just jealous. There were three great quotes in the speach, here’s two of them:

“Speeches should be like skirts: short enough to cover the good stuff, but long enough to keep it interesting”

“surround yourself with great people and let them do their job.”

The first is one that a great many of public speakers fail to realize, for they have fallen in love with the sounds of their own voice.

The second one is the adage of (in my belief) the sign of a great manager. The need to manage ALL the details is one that bogs many down to the detriment of their employees. THAT ability to hire and train good people, delegate, get out of their way, and then trust them to get the job done is one that few managers (or parents for that matter, except for the hire part) ever achieve. (and, oh BTW, have fun doing it!)

His kind of management will be missed.

  • Mine didn’t look like this.

    Maybe it should have…

  • Quartermaster

I passed the pics onto my former division officer (from the Sylvania) who now lives near JAX, FL.. he said “that’s one O-6 that has the right idea!”
