Just read Kawasaki’s tweets. Fav so far: Navy trying to scare us about COD landing on #Nimitz. Doing good job…
Now either I got lucky and had a great pilot, or it it’s usually gentler than some of the landings I’ve experienced at Lindberg Field.
The landings don’t scare me; the one takeoff scared the scheiss out of me, I kid you not. No cat, rolling take off down the angle, COD dropped like a ruptured duck, and I got to see a wide screen picture of oil leaking out the starboard engine and the underside of the catwalk at the same time.
Byron. I don’t blame you. Musta been a C-1 you were on. C-2s all get cat shots.
Beats me. All I know is it nearly scared the (body fluids and solids) out of me, then shook me like a rag doll for an hour. Dumped us off at JAX NAS, instead of Mayport where our cars were, and between 5 of us, barely had enough to get back out to Mayport. Told the project manager that it’d be a cold day in hell before I went off the front end in a damn COD. S-3? Sure. E-2? I’m up! Back seat of a ‘Cat? Oh hell yeah! COD? Fuhgedaboutit…
I not so fondly remember a trip into Cubi from Enterprise in the back end of a C-2. After 2 missed approaches in driving thunderstorms and landing, then skidding to a screeching halt on a flooded runway, I’ll take a seat where I can observe what is happening anytime.
Sometimes it sux to be the local subject matter expert in the situation, doesn’t it?
