Hope for Me Yet

My dark master apparently has health benefits:

Drinking five cups of coffee a day could reverse memory problems seen in Alzheimer’s disease, US scientists say.

The Florida research, carried out on mice, also suggested caffeine hampered the production of the protein plaques which are the hallmark of the disease.

Previous research has also suggested a protective effect from caffeine.

Now, get cracking on the medical benefits of Guinness, boys, that I might live my span of days untroubled.

Update: My kind of contest!

The company behind the dark Irish beer Guinness will give loyal drinkers a taste of space along with their stout, but only if they win a new contest.

Guinness has reserved a seat aboard a suborbital Virgin Galactic spaceliner as one of three experience prizes in an online contest honoring the 250th birthday of the beer’s brewery this year.

  • MAybe this is the reason old Navy Chiefs know it all and never forget anything, huh? Oh…that was before the sode generation…:)

Speaking of old Chiefs and coffee, it used to blow my mind out on the flight-line at DaNang, Holloman, DM, George, etc., wherever it’s blazing hot (where the temp off the concrete & asphalt HAD to be in the 130F range) to see those old crew chiefs standing around drinking that steaming hot jet black coffee in all that heat in the middle of the day. To this day I STILL don’t know how they did/do it…

      • Actually, they were smart….the body’s core temp is measured to determine when to turn the radiators on, or cut them off. On a hot day, a little warming internally made you sweat a little more, and then the evaporative effect cools you. In the cold, a cold drink tells your body to cut off the blood vessels near the surface, so as to retain heat in the core.

If you’re doing something smart and you don’t know it’s smart, does that make you smart?

  • 5 cups of strong coffee … every day?! Not sure what all that caffeine will be doing for musculature, as it’s a known dehydrater that has long-term effects on the muscles. Plus did you know it takes 16 oz. of water to reverse the dehydrating effects of caffeine.

I’m just saying. I love the stuff but 5 cups a day?

5 cups a day? Try 5 cups an HOUR for some of those old Sr. NCO types! :)

    • Ummm… being one of those Ol’ Senior NCO types, I can vouch for what VX sez. I still “do” a 12-cup pot every morning. EVERY morning.

And Kris… my musculature is still working quite well, thankyaverymuch. But it just might go tomorrow, I suppose. :)

        Buck,

same here. I’ve been drinking Navy-Strength coffee for about 40 years now, with no ill-effects to note, and at the 1-2 pot per day rate :)

Of course, the coffee helps my stamina, and the bourbon helps my heart, so along with the walking i do, that seems to be helping a mite.

        • Who are you kidding, no ill effects? Geez…just look at the crowd around here that used to wear the uniform? :) Then again, maybe it was from drinking the sludge at 0230 on the mid that had been sitting in the pot all day on a hot burner.

Lex, the medicinal effects of Guiness, and other real bears are universally known. No need for a study to confirm it.
Anything that tastes THAT good, has to be good for you.

One good double shot of espresso works wonders. Every day. From fresh roasted beans. Ambrosia.

Several years ago my doctor told me to cut down the amount of coffee I consumed, it would make my heart race. Two cups a day and that’s it for me.

I’ll take memory loss over a heart attack– as long I don’t forget where I left my Guinness…

    Lex,
Also, don’t forget about the latest research on the effects of watermelon.

  • Coffee and Guinness together — you’ll be happy and always remember why…

  • MissBirdlegs in AL

This also offers hope for me, Lex, so thanks! I didn’t realize that I could qualify as a Navy Chief, but if the amount and strength of coffee does it, I’m there! Doesn’t matter how hot the weather, gotta have my coffee. ;-)

  • Sadly, beer isn’t a better hydrator than water, it just has faster uptake. The hops in beer is a diuretic. But it has many other health benefits.

In fact, EOD troops, at least AF guys, keep generic beer on hand (there’s an NSN for it) or better beer if the generic stuff isn’t available (hint hint) because when exposed to certain toxins, beer will flush your system faster than mere water.

    Guys and Gals,
    It only works for mice…

You asked for it Lex so here’s the Guinness jump, in moderation of course

  • My mouse brain is going to benefit mightily from this best of news.

  • Kevin

Too bad us here in California cannot enter to win in the Guinness Contest. But I will continue to benefit from my regular caffiene IV.

  • Don’t believe the hype, folks. There are new “studies” coming out every day that suggest this, that and everything else will prevent Alzheimer’s Disease. Didn’t you hear, marijuana helps, too:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4286435.stm

Here is what I think ACTUALLY helps: years of healthy eating, exercise and good genes. That’s about it. Oh, and crosswords won’t help either:

    http://www.elderguru.com/crossword-puzzles-will-not-prevent-or-stave-off-alzheimers-disease/

    • Continuing to learn forces the brain to keep building…and that staves off those bad effects…so don’t just do more crossword puzzles, find other things to learn…paly and instrument, take up a new hobby, learn a language. Keep switching it up…constantly.
