Making a MiG

Although I always dreamed of taking one apart, this photo essay provides an interesting counterpoint to our Ozzie FA-18 video.

Good to see that they start with the tailhook!

FYI – intercepted a virus and spyware from that link – my Anti-Virus claims to have caught the virus, but I’ve got new indications of spyware on my PC…

OK, so the MiG is two hundred thousand rivets surrounding an oil leak waiting for metal fatigue to set in. Nifty jet, just not terribly impressed with the factory methods.

Interesting to compare this against the videos of Soviet production of the Ilyushin IL-2. In the former, clean well-lighted factories and fairly precise jigs and dies. In the latter, wooden dies and templates, cardboard for gaskets, factories dark and musty with lighting coming from smoky windows set on high.

It is sort of amazing how far we’ve come in this regard. Of course, the grungy factories produced over 36000 IL2′s, whereas they might make one of the new MiG’s per day if there was a large standing order. With progress comes complexity.

If you’re perusing the English Russia site, check out the link for the Russian Flying Fortress. I’ve no idea if it’s true, but if it is it should be captioned. “Brute Force — if it doesn’t work, you aren’t using enough of it.”
