Plague Ships

Echoes from the past:

Dozens of sailors and Marines who tested positive for swine flu have been quarantined aboard four Navy ships at or near Pearl Harbor.Health officials say at least 69 people had been confirmed with the virus.

Navy officials say an undetermined number of crew members with flulike symptoms have been quarantined on the ships that are part of the USS Boxer Amphibious Ready Group. It arrived in Hawaii on Friday.

A ship is a dreadful place for a generally communicable disease. What really sucks is to be in quarantine at the end of a seven-month deployment.

A week ago, there were reports of 110 H1N1 infections aboard Bonhomme Richard. Not sure how the numbers have gone since then. I hope for the better.

Ten percent of the incoming class of the Coast Guard Academy have it as well.

BTW, I’ll go out on a limb by forecasting a lot of “sick buildings” in the civilian workplace. Silicon Valley cube farms are notorious disease spreading facilities. A few of the multi-culti elements adhere to their third well sanitation practices.

This may be a real bumpy spell for all of us — not just the Navy.

Additional Swine Flu effects on the BOXER include the cancellation of their Tiger Cruise. Lots of disappointed family members I’m sure.

Any of you old timers ever experience a pink-eye epidemic in Subic? We always blamed it on the marines.

    • I always blamed it on the Mojos.

Tim, As you well know…one man’s ” non-specific urethritis”… is another man’s ” dose of the clap”… fun and games in the way back. Best

Had half the squadron come down with “non-specific urethraitis” just about a week before a bunch of wives were do to arrive for a “holiday”.

Talk about a bunch of husbands sweating bullets… :)

AW1 Tim, did they ever hear of the proverb, “Decide in haste, repent at leisure“?

          Heh,

No, but the Corpsmen, and the Base Public Works folks went out of their way to blame the “water supply” and the “showers” for the problem…..

Not all the wives were convinced. most were NOT amused… :)

I wonder what the quarantine period will be. For Bubonic Plague, the Royal Navy had a 3 week quarantine after last known exposure. The bad thing about flu is, you can carry it, but never break down yourself. At least we can test for any one carrying it.

  • um…I noted that the ship and crew will end up in San Diego.
