Back in 2005, Maureen Dowd invoked the “absolute moral authority” of those who’ve had to bury loved ones returned from the nation’s wars.
But it’s 2009 now, and that’s so yesterday’s news according to ABC’s Charlie Gibson:
It’s such a sad story. Martha Raddatz [of ABC News] wrote a terrific book about one battle that took place in Iraq, and it was the battle in which Cindy (Sheehan’s) son was killed. And you look at somebody like that and you think here’s somebody who’s just trying to find some meaning in her son’s death. And you have to be sympathetic to her. Anybody who has given a son to this country has made an enormous sacrifice, and you have to be sympathetic. But enough already.
Get with the program, Mrs. Sheehan. The war’s over: Bush is gone.

There’s several old sayings about friends. Such as, a friend will help you move but a good friend will help you move a body. Be slow to choose a friend, slower still to dismiss him. The courage of my friends does me honor. A constant here is friendship means more than convenience.
It’s good to see the political left displaying their loyalty. Tax cheats get cabinet positions. Preachers who’ve you’ve listened to every sunday for 20 years are left high and dry before the election is over. Wing-nut anti-war protestors? Suddenly the travel funding and press dries up, that threat to run for Feinstein’s seat has no traction, and they become yet another footnote in history.
I can just hear the Code Pink folks:
It’s not like we don’t love you, sweetheart. Think of all our great times together! But, we just don’t think of you in *that* way. We ought to see other people and, you know, just be friends. Better for both of us.

As reprehensible as I find Ms. Sheehan to be, I have to grudgingly respect her for standing behind her beliefs. I’m the same way with Hillary: can’t stand her, but I respect her for standing behind her vote for the Iraq War while others (John Edwards, etc.) turned tail and ran at the first sign of political expediency.
I respect Ms Sheehan in the same way I respect a mental patient.
Maybe now Ms. Sheehan can really and truly honor the life of her son and grieve for him in private.
the term “useful idiot” comes to mind
Are you talking about Cindy, Nancy, Harry, or Barry?
Dust has to choose? You left out the usual last option in a multiple-choice question:
(E) All of the above
The obvious answer to that trick question is a heartfelt ‘Yes.’
