The Box Office

Got this through the email pipe.

c5

While the C-5 was turning over its engines, a female crewman gave the G.I.s on board the usual information regarding seat belts, emergency exits, etc. Finally, she said, “Now sit back and enjoy your trip while your captain, Judith Campbell, and crew take you safely to Afghanistan.”

An old MSgt. asked the attendant, “Did I understand you right? Is the captain a woman?”

“Yes,” said the attendant, “In fact, this entire crew is female.”

cockpit

“My God,” he said, “I wish I had two double scotch and sodas. I don’t know what to think with only women up there in the cockpit.”

“That’s another thing, Sergeant,” said the crew member, “We No Longer Call It ‘The Cockpit’, it’s ‘The Box Office.’”

Quote of the day:

“Whatever you give a woman, she will make greater. If you give her your love, she’ll give you a baby. If you give her a house, she’ll give you a home. If you give her groceries, she’ll give you a meal.. If you give her a smile, she’ll give you her heart. She multiplies and enlarges what is given to her. So, if you give her any crap, be ready to receive a ton of sh!t.”

  • I don’t know which was funnier, the first part or the quote.

I guess if they end DADT at some point you’ll have to know who’s pitching and who’s catching to know what to call the place the one’s flying the plane sit…

Let’s hope the cockpit and boxoffice never merge. Court martials for everyone!

  • An old MSgt. asked the attendant, “Did I understand you right? Is the captain a woman?”

Heh. A credit to old Master Sergeants everywhere. He made me proud.

    ::He ducks. He runs.:: ;)

  • Our Oz ‘babes’ wear pink hats no less (heaps of pics). “First all Female Globemaster crew for RAAF – 08 December 2008. An important milestone for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) was achieved on December 8, when its first all-female crew took the controls of a C-17A Globemaster III aircraft at RAAF Base Amberley: http://www.defence.gov.au/media/download/2008/Dec/20081208b/index.htm

Our humorless bunch of PC prigs that run the USAF these days would probably have courts-martialed the lot with the ranking females leading the way charging “conduct unbecoming” and demeaning to the “professional image” of the sisterhood as seen by bowing to the “enforced” stereotypes of the “patriarchy” by the use of the color pink.

      • I guess it helped that WingCo was ‘ex’ Sqdn CO. “Piloting the aircraft was Wing Commander Linda Corbould as captain…. The flight held extra significance for Wing Commander Corbould, being her final flight in command of the C-17A, having handed over command of No.36 Squadron in late November”. Probably Linda had caught ‘bad hat habits’ whilst training in USofA for the first C-17A handover earlier: http://tiny.cc/DMkaq

I remember this photo floating around a few years ago. The Air Force called it “Ladies’ night over Afghanistan”.

The A/C was a KC135 Stratotanker. The participants: (clockwise from lower left) 1st Lt. Alison, Capts. Heather and Waynetta and, Senior Airman Lyndi, all from the 376th Expeditionary Air Refueling Squadron.

And I’ll bet good money that the old M.Sgt opened hisself up a box of “Shut the Hell Up” and started eating :)

    • Prolly not, Byron. We (speaking of Ol’ MSgts) can be funny like that. :)

But I WILL admit the “Box Office” rejoinder was/is classic.

  • virgil xenophon

That’s the good ‘ole AF for you–but not THIS old Mutha’s AF. LOL!! And double amen corner on the “ton of shit” bit! :)

  • Humble1310

I like the one of the first all-female C-130 crew better. They were all standing on the loading ramp, with shoulder holsters and M9′s. Besides, everyone knows real pilots fly props. ;)

  • Now that’s an experience I’d pay money to see…….. at the Box Office.

Lex and guys … I adore that last quote. Who was the unsung hero who said that? I’ll bet he’s a happy happy man.

Good on them. Qualify yourselves just like the gents and stand up!
I would fly with you anytime.

  • AW1 Tim

The Box Office, eh? I’m not gonna touch that line with a 10 foot pole, let alone an 8 foot Hungarian… :)

  • Larry

Am I the only one to notice that the 1st LT front left looks an awful lot like Tanya Harding?

    Just sayin…….

  • DV

is it too late to point out that’s not a C-5 cockpit? er, box office? not that it matters to the story.

  • MaxDamage

Maybe it’s just a stereotype, but I’m not sure I like the idea of four blonds at the controls at the same time. Diversity, you know — at least one brunette to lend some balance to the piloting.

Oh, wait. We don’t do that kind of diversity.

How about requesting any pilot in charge not believe in an afterlife? Because I want them to think they have only one shot at it!

Not that kind of diversity either, eh?

Getting so a guy can’t really accept and can’t really complain. I’ll have two of whatever the MSG was requesting, and put his on my tab.

Darned kids look young enough to be in high school and are piloting a C5, which, one day God himself is going to look down, notice that thing and remind it that it’s too darned big to fly.

Obviously NOT a Navy crew (aside from the C-5 aspect) since the flight crew isn’t diverse enough. No wise latina woman, no minority females anywhere in sight And No redheads. No ugly ones. Now that just won’t work. What a sign of the times – the male USAF fighter jocks are now flying drones whilst the females are flying the -17s and 5Bs.

  • scooterkool

Neat story, over the course of six years the story has changed slightly.
If anyone cares for the real story:
    http://www.military-network.com/LadyPilots.cfm
    As noted it’s not a C-5….
    It’s a smaller bus :)

    I’ll be in my bunk.

At Bombardier Learjet it is the Flight Deck. This old PO1 did elaborate on what a Real Flight Deck is, complete with pictures of the CV/CVNs I served aboard. It’s an ABH thing from the start of my career, OK?
Does anybody remember Janie O’Dea and Rosemary Conatser? I got to meet Janie O’Dea at NAF Naples back in ’76 when she was in VR-24 out of Rota. She was a blast!!!!!!!!!

Almost forgot, in my last tour in VA128, we had a female TC4C pilot, Liz. I don’t remember her last name but she was a LCDR.

      • Glenn, My Dad and Deke Bordone made the delivery flight of the very first TC-4 from Grumman to Oceana (VA-42). In fact, he flew every TC-4C in the fleet at least once.

    • oldskydog

      Glen,
I remember Rosemary. Conatser was her married name…don’t remember her maiden name, but she was one of the first female flight students when I was instructing. Don’t think I flew with her, but I did fly with Lynn Spruill, who later flew C-130′s and Mary Lou Jorgenson (Steele?) who somehow got into A-4′s.
The first group weren’t a true test of the program, since they all had pilots liscenses when they came in.
I had Lynn on an acro flight one day, and when she called the tower for entry, she said “Navy Corpus Tower, this is Heartbreak 745 over the high bridge for entry”. The swuadron call sign was Heartless, not Heartbreak, so you can imagine the comments from everybody on the frequency.

  • Edward

I seem to recall that there were female pilots providing CAS in A-10 warthogs not so long ago.
Also female crew in AC-130 “spooky” gunships as well.

And don’t forget the female MPs who escorted supply convoys in Iraq — in particular, Sgt. Leigh Ann Hester won a silver star for bravery due to her actions March 20, 2005.

Yes, the quote is very true.

  • Liz

    Box office. Hee hee hee.

  • [...] The Box Office — a reminder that the Navy ain’t what it used to be (not that there’s anything wrong with that) [...]

FYI, the story behind the photo of the 4 female aircrew
(“All female tanker crew flies Afghan mission”)
    can be found here:

Great website, too, by the way.
