More fires in SoCal after a dry, dry spring:
A wildfire in the mountains above Los Angeles has surged in every direction, going in a single day from a modest threat to a danger to some 10,000 homes.
The blaze nearly tripled in size in triple-digit heat Saturday, leaving three people burned, destroying at least three homes and forcing the evacuation of 1,000 homes and an untold number of people.
A slight drop in temperatures and an influx of fire crews from around the state were expected to bring some relief Sunday.
Mandatory evacuations were in effect for neighborhoods in Altadena, Glendale, Pasadena, La Crescenta and Big Tujunga Canyon.
Something big was burning down Mexico way yesterday as well.
Daughter eldest might well be on to something, heading off to Portland.

Every time I hear about things like this now I feel such a surge of gratitude, recognizing I’m blessed to be safe and comfortable. 2007 was just a little too close…
Today in SJ we expect a bit of a cool down from near 100 degs, Friday and yesterday. Luckily, we had no fires in the immediate.
Mebbe you will derive benefit of rain from Hurricane Jimeni, headed your way. Best of luck down there!
In my little corner of paradise it is almost 11:00… and 100 degrees. I’m guessing we’re headed to another day of 103 to 104. Better go see if the plants on the patio are still alive (those that haven’t been killed off by the last three days of 103+).
Good thing it’s cooled off today. Watching some fires starting up a bit south of Gilroy yesterday had us watching things.
The S2Ts out of Hollister got some work time, but not very much, which was good.
None of the tropical storm models show Jimena getting as far north as San Diego, sorry to say. Half show a curve east and sount, half west and south, but none north of the border. Must be a hellacious high over SoCal right now.
Portland: 81 high after morning clouds burn off, low 58. Perfect except for the local government.
was down by Camp Pendleton yesterday, and could still see the smoke from the Station fire… and the Mexico fire explains the cloud i saw down that way. (my FIL lives on a hill in Vista)
it was most impressive driving back to the SFV last night, flames everywhere you could see on the mountainsides, visable from miles away. and it’s smokey as hello here in the eastern SFV today… somewhat cooler, but i can’t tell if that’s weather or the smoke.

reasons to worry: brush in the area has not burned in ~40 years, 15-20 feet thick, and the area has lots of pine trees too.
scouts out!
Well, that’s a relief! At least it’s not as far south as San Diego. And it probably won’t get there. Still remember how we worried about you, Lex, and the Lex-real-babes the last time there were fires in California.
Now if we can just dodge a hurricane here, I can stop worrying about natural disasters and focus on man-made ones, many of which originate in Washington. As usual.

Sort of off topic, my husband is protesting my designation of Ted Kennedy as a murderer, since it wasn’t “premeditated.” Premeditated murder is first-degree murder, in most states, as you all know. But there are two other kinds; second degree murder, and felony murder. I feel that Kennedy is at least a felony murderer, according to the definitions found on Dr. Google. Murder by cowardice, or murder by malignant narcissism are surely to be designated as felony murder.
Wouldn’t you say? Please feel free to enlighten me. Some of you out there are lawyers, I know.
Marianne
there are four distinct kinds of homicide:
felonious
excusable
justifiable
praiseworthy
YMMV. %-)
Negligent homicide is a felony in most jurisdictions. Murder is not to strong a word to use.
I think I could have gotten him for moral cowardice for sure…
I have a feeling I might be saying that when summer rolls around.
They’re saying conditions will be worse than last summer, and that ended up with 173 dead.
She’s headed off to Portland again? Which school?
PS: Google “microwave fire oregon”
Stay safe, Lex. Don’t emulate the Los Angeles couple that got boiled in their hot tub where they thought they could safely ride out the fire.
