JPJ’s wardroom tests CHINFO’s limits.
Don’t go there if you don’t like rapper-style F-bombs from yet-to-be-qualified junior officers aboard warships at sea.
Otherwise: Enjoy!
Update: I guess CHINFO didn’t like it.

Dead men walking.
That was my plebe year roommate. . .I am not surprised. . .
This is one little AF Indian that’s keepin’ out of Navy stuff on this deal……
Or I COULD be where-Angels-fear-to-tread snarky and say: “It looks like The Torch Has Been Passed.”
But I would NEVER be the one to do THAT, now would I?
I’m just glad that most of my focs’le follies and COC skits were pre-YouTube days.
Best one was the one that got CAG (and F8 Mig Killer) Phil Wood to storm out of the Naples AFSOUTH O’Club shouting “F*** you guys.”
JPG is a photo format. JPJ might be, oh, a ship?
Picky, picky. But thanks!
Well, Dang. You DID. I’d obviously not got around to these parts yet when I tweeted ya.

CDR Salamander has been having a fascinating discussion about this over at his place (comments): http://www.usna.com/Parents/SPPA/Library_Dir/Qualifications%20of%20a%20Naval%20Officer.htm
Opps! Wrong link above: http://cdrsalamander.blogspot.com/2009/08/sunday-funnies_9864.html
[...] very sage Neptunus Lex links to this bit of seagoing hilarity (NSFW language [...]
That is pure gold. I hope their careers survive it.
In all seriousness, SCOTT’s comments reveal a couple of points. The first is that, just as in the example of HIS generation’s take on service humor, one doesn’t have to be “solemn” about something to be “serious” about it, and I’m sure those guys take their ultimate duties and obligations just as seriously as any previous generation. Second is the matter of inter-generational cultural norms. As a college coach, my father always said one of the things that kept him young at heart was being continually surrounded by each succeeding generation of America’s youth and their ever changing sensibilities. “Not you’re father’s Navy, anymore” No indeed. No indeed, things change. The question is , are they always for the better? The answer most here would give would be, if I’m any judge of the traffic, is a resounding no. But is this an example of just such a case? I would say doubtful. Jarring to some of us geezers/fossils who sort of wince–especially as so much of the recent stuff seems to reflect the humor, values and cultural mores of the underclass in terms of what seems “Hip.” As I mentioned to SCOTT in reply to a post of his previously, the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics is tough to fight against. The question is: How far can the envelope be pushed before “bad taste” becomes the new standard for “good taste?” “Whom knows”, it’s probably like one of the “Supremes” said about obscenity: “I can’t define it, but I know it when I see it.” LOL.
VX — as usual, spot on. These JOs are pressing the boundaries of good taste, as my generation of JOs did as well — they are just different boundaries. As Byron said on CDR S’s blog, I’ll bet these JOs are worshipped by their troops. I got a good lesson on that during my third class cruise. The CHENG was a UVa lax player, with a low BS tolerance valve. and who regularly battled the CO (interesting ship — LCDR CO, LT XO, JG DHs — 317′ DE). The troops knew he was their only line of defense against capt queeg. Single boiler, single screw, 2 steam generators. Mid-pac, the ship goes DIW, and dark. Every single snipe was out of their rack, busting hump, because they knew that Mr. Rhulman’s butt was on the line. That was my education in the value of having your troops in the “want-to zone”, vice the “have-to zone.” There isn’t a troop on that ship that hasn’t seen that video. If it makes them see their DivO as human, then I will accept that, at the cost of my idea of wardroom decorum.
But, that was in the days of armed guards surrounding the DK handing out money on the mess decks, just to give you an idea of how ancient I am.
They should use this a a recruitment video…
Um, that’s beyond salty language and into “limited vocabulary skills” territory.
Well, I guess I’m a bit of a straddle on this one. If I’d seen it at foc’s'l follies – knowing the background of the original video, i.e. that it was itself a spoof of the characteristic stupidity, venality and coarse language of rap videos – I’d have said, “jolly good for the SWOs, they’re having a bit of fun.”
OTOH, as the CO my heart would have died inside me to find out that Our Internal Fun had made it out to the entire intartubes. This is hardly the image the Navy wants to put out, or at least it wasn’t in my day. Non-qual JOs running about hurling f-bombs in uniform and making videos when they should be signing off PQS. The imagination reels.
Lex:
[Historical note for readers: The A-3 Skywarrior, a.k.a "Whale" had no ejection seats. As in "WTF are you going to do to me, make me fly Whales off the boat?"]
Ah, the responsibility of command, sigh. But since I was always the guy voted “Least likely to promote/succeed/survive” and “Most likely to be Court Martialed for striking a superior officer because he desperately deserved it”, I smile very broadly. Given the stories of highly public behavior by some of my mentors who were Vietnam era bubbas, these kids are very well behaved indeed. Must be the old Whaler in me.

Yes.. the venerable A3D.. as in “all 3 d…”
I got the chance to fly from Moffet to Andrews in the VIP version of it. A VERY nice ride, I might add, but having to climb up through the nose hatch was an interesting bit. Especially in summer whites…..
Bit yea, did I mention how NICE the ride was?
Unless I’m mistaken, Lex, all of them were qual’d save the Oriental JO, who had some funnly looking thing under his name patch. Even JPJ was wearing his water wings on his coveralls.
Apparently the “JPG” has an insufficient number of CWO/LDO’s to provide adequate supervision for these “Frat Boys” turned officers. There should have been a mean nasty CWO4 Bos’n there to plant his size 12 up their backsides. But what do I know, I retired in ’91.
Sent the link to Knucklehead 1, who had showed me the original video in June. She put the link on her Facebook wall, with this:
Some with their panties in a wad, should realize there was a previous version, which Lex alluded to — and was enormously popular. All these nascent SWOs did was to say “Let us who are REALLY on a boat show you what it is like”. They didn’t make up the words, and actually, I don’t think it is them saying them — merely lip synced.
If you have the luxury of having a 20 something close to you (like all luxuries, expensive), ask them what they think. Because their opinion matters much more than your encrusted thoughts.
I hesitate – but then again NOT. ‘Jet Pilot’ spoof Utubby video clip and song from an RNZAF helo pilot (of all people): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BzU1sYPjzo
The Blue & Gold officers for these JOs are no doubt proud of the lot. At least they were diverse.
Their parents must be so proud.

LOL!! The AF WOULD feature a female! Where and when do I re-up! Only thing close to that during my time officer-wise was back at DaNang where there was a brown-haired AF Nurse Capt with much the same build, look, but with curly brown hair and glasses (and more prudish attitude–unfortunately–either that or my silver tongue was tarnished and needed SEVERE polishing) Otherwise over in England we had for a while a dynamite petite strawberry blond enlisted type as our Sq Admin NCO temp substitute–was married tho, and VERY faithful to SSgt husband–from Detroit and liked to work on cars–drove everyone crazy (but a VERY nice person.) She was replaced by fat, u-ugeleey female Capt w. attitude who was beard for gay husband Wing PIO–was actually a relief, no daily torture of lookiee, no touchee.
(Actually, this whole bit shows what a sexist this fossil is–notice how I didn’t wail about the vid reflecting poorly on the AF–just shows I don’t consider women “real” officers, I guess……. There, now that I’ve stepped all over my fore-skin here with the distaff side, let me be quick to say that even tho I served with several very, very capable and dedicated female officers even way back in my day, biology being what it is, I consider them a needless distraction in a male dominated service–EXACTLY as was our experience with our admin NCO cutie–as efficient and dedicated as she was–not HER fault–it just in the nature of the male beast–and we are just that, nature has made sure of that–so the better looking they are, the more they distract from the mission., IMHO. But, hey, I’m willing to swing with it if it’s the only game in town, no problemo–just don’t think it’s wise over-all as a policy matter. Skippy-san and I are blood-brothers on that score, I guess.
The star of that AF vid reminds me of my old Ops Officer at RAF Uxbridge… in two very big ways.
SpazSinbad, fantastic! But no deployment video has ever matched All The Way to Amarillo. Realize, this is all done in just one take.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xni1_c8aINE
Which says a lot about British effectiveness down south, eh?
Zane/
Funny vid, but makes me wonder if any of the Brits has ever actually BEEN to Amarillo, or known anyone who HAS.. Hotter than the Sahara in the summer w. just as much blowing dust and freezing cold w. sleet and snow in the winter–the worst of ALL worlds–NO redeeming features whatsoever–and smack in the middle of nowhere to boot.
Nothing I would EVER write home about–let alone dedicate a song to….
Z, my all time fav would be the Shania Twain LSO spoof by the gals from USS Ronald Reagun. Sadly “Navy Squelches YouTube Vid – Airman’s{?} musical movie showed glimpses of aircraft carrier’s security measures – Posted Aug 19, 07 (Newser Summary) – The Navy removed an airman’s video from YouTube because it showed a “lack of propriety” in the use of safety equipment aboard the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan, the AP reports. The video, set to Shania Twain’s “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” showed a sailor dancing in a full-body radiation suit. The video also offended by showing a glimpse of the door to the nuclear power plant on board the Ronald Reagan; rules forbid any part of a ship’s nuclear equipment be shown to foreign nationals. Although the video didn’t compromise security, it did violate the rules, a Navy spokesman explained. The airman responsible has been counseled, he said. —Colleen Barry”
Video now at LiveLeak (the mind boggles): http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=074_1193508431&c=1
I’ve got a ways before I become a geezer, but those JOs on the JPJ should be disciplined. Whether they actually said the stuff, or simply lip synced them matters not. Their conduct was unbecoming, article 133 stuff.
They aren’t frat boys anymore, they are commissioned officers, and if they can’t conduct themselves as such, then they need to go.
Call me what you will, I couldn’t care less. I can understand Lex’s feelings on this. I feel likewise, and I’ve never held command. Between trash like that, the diversity bullies and the feminization of the service, what’s left? Will the Officer Corps ever quit dragging the service through the mud, or tolerating those who do? According comments to Salamander’s post VCNO, and CNO have seen it and don’t care. MCPON was going to shown it and the news would be sent back if cared. That VCNO and CNO don’t care, says enough for me. This is a Navy not worth being a part of.
The idea that one cannot take a few minutes off every now and then from efforts to qualify for SWO or OOD to have some fun – that seems unrealistic at best. I think this is really funny and vote for 5.0 Fitreps all round!
If it is kept private/internal. A bit simplistic to say that, “hey, we were just having some fun.”
Yeah we were just having a bit of fun, being coarse and dragging the name of the Navy through the mud. Yeah, great bunch.
Just one more reason to tell a young man of quality to stay away, far away, from the military.
As has been proven time and again, you don’t have to be low class to have fun, or be funny. This isn’t a “generational” thing, but a matter of the image you wish to project. If you want to project the image of a ghetto thug, they did a great job, a great job.
These guys get 1.0 for judgment on their fitness report in my book. You don’t have to wallow in the gutter to “relate” to the troops.
Agreed QM.
With all due respect to the Bloggess, if this is the type of “social media” needed to recruit troops, they are not troops I would prefer to serve with.
If members of our local law enforcement did something similar, my guess is that they would be punished in a rather timely manner. Yet, apparently there are some who think/feel that it is fine, even admirable for our military leaders to do so.
Gee, a video was made, posted to the Net, and is now widespread/viral? I’m SURE the Officers involved had no idea THAT might happen.
OTOH, if this topic were the most serious concern I had, life would be jelly beans. Still, ….
Nice job boys, I had some of my own ideas on a video, but never found a boat soon enough…
As far as the disciplining — get real! I’m not an CO/XO, but these JO’s probably just wanted to post something their friends could see online. I think it’s a great recruitment tool. REMEMBER: you don’t join the Navy as a youth to do paperwork or make your quals or ‘grow up,’ you join to kick ass and take names, and represent and be pimpin’ (or some such thing…).
As far as the language, yeah sure it’s coarse, but I hear far worse up and down my chain of command every day. Enough with the ‘New Navy.’
I ADORE this video and think it’ll inadvertently be one hell of a recruitment video. It’s already gone viral and people (especially young people – the kind that the military needs) seem to overwhelmingly love it. To me it’s reminiscent of MASH, which reminded us that war and the military were serious, but that frivolity and ridiculousness were completely necessary to stay focused, sane and not lose your sense of humor. But then again, I always had a thing for Hawkeye so I might be a bit prejudiced.
That was some funny stuff.. too bad I forsee some bad fitreps and some IA’s in their futures…
