A Launch Party!

For Windows 7.

Charlie Brooker probably won’t host one.

  • I like it for its ah, dark humour possibilities.

The spectacle of 3-4 guys upgrading their laptops and having them glitch out during the process would be comedy gold.

I can’t wait! I’m gonna make a mint off this this. My data guys are drooling. Altho honestly we’ve been running 7 beta in house for 6 months and it has been very stable. Surprisingly so. Course anything would be better than Vista.

I’m a Windows guy, and I got no further than 18 seconds into that vid and HAD to SHUT it OFF!

Now, go stroke your oleophobic glass, Lex. ;-)

I know Windows is awful. Everyone knows Windows is awful. Windows is like the faint smell of piss in a subway: it’s there, and there’s nothing you can do about it.

Now THAT is funny…. and I resemble that remark…. and I’ll probably stick with XP on my ancient laptop until the electrons fly off the chips that have gone up in smoke…. or until I purchase yet another new laptop with Windows 7 already pre installed. (Then again, I still have a Win98 desktop that I occasionally use because of the driver issue and old hardware (read: voice modem) that work fine bought do not work in XP.

  • Don’t know why MS didn’t call Vista Windows 7 Beta.

I will never use Vista, but reports (agree with those above) tend to indicate 7 might be acceptable.

On the other hand, I don’t see the point of spending $300 just to upgrade from 5 (XP) to 7.

Still chuggin’ along with XP here too–gave it a good, loonnng look, then stayed as far away from Vista as I possibly could. I’m right on JoeCs wing on this one, XP until the electrons go on a sit-down strike.

For PC users, there is a hard and fast rule: Never, EVER load a new Win-doze OS until it’s to the first patch. I’m running XP and have no intention of running anything else for a good while.

    • Actually, Byron, there are exceptions to the rule. MS-DOS 5.0 is one, while Windows 95 (Windows 4.0) is another.

I was going to put up a reference to WinXP as Windows 5.0, but some quick research reminds me that Windows 2000 (AKA Win2k) was 5.0, while WinXP was 5.1.

On the other hand, the whole “Home/Expert/Professional” concept is really climbing up my buttocks. I don’t see why I have to pay $100 (or more) premium for an OS for adults; that is to say, an OS for people who know how to maintain and tweak their computers without the sovereign guidance of MicroSoft.

  • I bought a new box back in June with Vista on it… and was VERY apprehensive. Imagine my surprise: the OS is stable and I’ve had zero issues. I did consider a Mac, but the thought of paying the price premium plus upgrading all my legacy software to Mac-compatibility… or the prospect of running Boot Camp… put me right off. Lesser of two evils, and all that. Plus I just couldn’t become one of them (with apologies to Our Host).

    • I’ve had Vista in my ‘new’ computer for close to 2 years now.
Awful, smawful, it’s never given my any grief.

But that video … no doubt created by Mac users as part of the ongoing conspiracy. Those people frightened me. I be thinking all their “guests” wanted to do was run away screaming into the night. I know I did.

    • Buck, for future reference: Parallels is the way to go on Intel macs…

  • JR

Linux. Yeah – he says we’re creepier than the mac guys but it isn’t so. I’m not creepy at all. Vendor lock in sucks – I don’t care what flavor.

It would be nice to get a MS OS that uses LESS memory…

Be happy to send you a copy of my Windows 386 disks. Both of them. I remember thinking at the time, any OS that takes 64K of RAM just to load has got to be pathetic, and promises of Windows never needing more than 640K are lies.

I should have been a prophet.

  • Microsoft Security Essentials freely available today, runs fine on Windows 7 RC. Vista was fine with all the goop turned off, Win 7 is fine. Go for it. WinXP ain’t good on internet now – it is a target.

Jerry Pournelle has a warning about getting this through Google. Apparently the top link goes to a Chinese firm, NOT Microsoft.

      Warning: MSE From Qiyang Software

    • Spaz, I’ve been running XP for about 6 or 7 years now, and have had no security issues.

Then again, I’ve been using Zone Alarm and Norton’s Anti-virus at the same time, and I’m not dumb enough to fall for the “social engineering” phishes.

XP is just fine, and I see no compelling reasons to upgrade right now. I’m just happy to hear that Windows 7 doesn’t suck as bad as Vista… :)

Built a Win7 x64 machine last night — most trouble-free MS build I’ve ever experienced. Only issues were related to moving over to 64-bit for the first time, and those were just related to poor driver support by hardware vendors. I think MS might have finally done it right with this one (although I’d still stick with Mac for household, non-business users).

The drive on my XP Pro fell on its sword a while back, and a buddy suggested Win 7 Eval. Loaded x32 and running rather well, with the only regular exception being Win Explorer crashes. There seems to be the occasional memory issue, but that’s a perennial Windoze issue.

I keep telling myself that there is still too much software that isn’t ported to Mac, but, detestable cretins, they’ve pretty much taken that argument away from me. Coming soon to a house near Mongo…

      • Mongo, I repeat: if you have an Intel Mac, parallels is the way to go, if you’re interested in retaining Wintel apps until you can replace them.
