"Sign on, young man, and sail with me. The stature of our homeland is no more than the measure of ourselves. Our job is to keep her free. Our will is to keep the torch of freedom burning for all. To this solemn purpose we call on the young, the brave, the strong, and the free. Heed my call, Come to the sea. Come Sail with me." -- John Paul Jones
"Pardon him, Theodotus; he is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature" --George Bernard Shaw, "Caesar and Cleopatra"
"And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music."--Friedrich Nietzsche
"A kind Providence has placed in our breasts a hatred of the unjust and cruel, in order that we may preserve ourselves from cruelty and injustice. They who bear cruelty, are accomplices in it. The pretended gentleness which excludes that charitable rancour, produces an indifference which is half an approbation. They never will love where they ought to love, who do not hate where they ought to hate."--Edmund Burke
“You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours.”--General Sir Charles Napier

No problem Lex. We came for the style and stayed for the content. I will continue to try to crash your server by spreading positive word of mouth to my friends and colleagues.
Quoting Thoreau is all very well. But I know a few good limericks, if that would cheer you up.
We’ll endure just about anything, to be able to keep on reading what you’re writing, Lex my friend.

Simple is good but I do miss the airplane pictures. But I can find them anywhere if I get too despondent.
Egads…. I thought you’d been hijacked. What, between one visit and the next the whole scene had changed. Well, whatever to keep the electronic chipmunk servants happy……
What Marianne and ProwlerAMDO said about the writing.
Besides, it still looks the same in my newsreader (Thunderbird). :-{)
Wot with all the ‘allwhite theme’ should not the coda be “The unbearable brightness of Lex”? I jest. Hope the new arrangements ease the server burden. More visitors the merrier. No?

My worst fears, etc., had noticed the outward manifestations from this end.
Sure hope you can keep the “Hi-Drag” look somehow–was a classy looking site. And the visuals are no little part of the experience. If I want the PDF vanilla academic experience I can find plenty of that elsewhere. Two things: 1) can you add a contact or e-mail mode so we can submit? 2) Can you add blogroll links back in this mode–as is damn convenient to branch off from here with the click of the mouse. I’ll bet some other blogs you linked to will suffer a reduction just due to xtra hassle factor of typing everything in anew each time,
Awaiting “the fix” with baited breath.
Or will it take us many trips to the tip jar?
Gott in Himmel! Back from the dead!
(A mirrored image–but who’s bitchin’?) Vonderbar!
VX, someone hit that ‘reset button’.
I’m confused. Looks the same to me… ??
JoshG: “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss….” The ‘look’ of this site changed to a plain ‘all white’ style briefly – then it changed back again to same old, same old.
I have noticed that Thoreau is like liver and onions, you either really, really like him, or you can’t stand him. I personally think of him as a self centered twit.
I am glad the problems were momentary, I would not like to face the day sans Lex.
I like Liver and Onions. So does my retired AF Colonel friend in Dayton and I treated him to same at Melody in Dayton last May. Please do not insult such fine fare by associating it with that twit Thoreau, even in comparison.
I notice Hot Mic is absent again. While I have no idea what “php” is, I know system overhead can cause problems. I’m sure the increased traffic which Lex gets when one of his posts is linked from some other popular blog causes large problems and getting the amount of code down to a reasonable level is required. I could live with the less fancy site, but it’s not my call.
OK if you like the new (old) digs – pony up to the tip jar. I’d rather Lex have more time (and money) for flying so he can generate new flying stories than wasting time beating the site into submission every time somebody in the greater world discovers what we know already about the quality of the writing here as well as the discourse it produces.
While we all tend to bend in the same direction in the political winds I appreciate it that the loyal opposition keeps plugging away and that the dialog hasn’t descended into the gutter like most comment sections you read out there. While greatly outnumbered the fidelity of some readers to there positions in the face of overwhelming skepticism is commendable. Maybe Lex needs to put a tip jar up for them , too. Hell if Prop 13 hadn’t passed ol’ flit would need the help on his prop taxes alone.
In the mean time give early and often less Lex lose all patience with fighting server demons and just decide its easier just to write a letter to the editor once an awhile and spent more time improving his handicap.
He’s much too classy to beg and does a really lame job when the costs of running this thing starts to bite of letting us know there ain’t no free lunch.
It had been noticed, but we figured that we knew (generically) what the reason(s) were. Lex, if there is a $$$ amount that can help resolve most of the hardware/software issues during this growth period, just let us know what we need to shoot for.
Yours is one of a handful (one hand, most of the fingers) that I would subscribe to outside of work related stuff.
Christmas is just around the corner.
Regards,
I recall that a while back Lex posted a survey whose intent was to ascertain, among other things, the economic and educational status of the readership. Came back that it was quite high on all points in relation to the national adverage…
…we indeed have some high rollers and uber smart people around here ( they know who they are )…and some who excessively run at the mouth…no matter they/we all share a love of country, our military and informed principled debate who even when we disagree retain, in most cases,a respect for the other mans/womans ( Lex Babes included ) opninion…no amen corner here…its most unusual…it keeps me coming back…its worth preserving… Best
Snake Eater, were responses to that survey supposed to be, err, umm, honest & accurate?
Ron S, Your lamely cynicial, sh*t-eating comment and cloying smiley face thingy notwithstanding…that was not the point of my comment…I choose to believe for a number of reasons that the responses were “honest & accurate”…not sure you were around at that time…if you were it’s likely I might have come to a different conclusion. Best
Sorry to hit a sore spot Mr. Snake Eater.
My post was an apparently unsuccessful attempt at levity; neither intentionally cynical (not even lamely) nor sh*t-eating. Apologies if it was intrepreted by you differently. Assuredly did not mean to offend or cast aspersions.
You are correct, I only became aware of the Captains blog about four years ago, so I suppose that I do not qualify as one of the “plank owners”.
V/R
Ron, S., No need for the “Mr Snake Eater” formality… a simple “Supreme Leader” or “Maximum Leader” will suffice…
…that said…my apologies back to you…I was a little squirrely yesterday when I made that comment…took a couple of Midol right after and felt much better. Best
Content is everything, and Lex provides that in abundance.
You want style, sans content, just go to whitehouse.gov
Funny!
Can I ask what was changed under the hood? Did you implement a caching scheme to reduce the amount of dynamic theme processing?
The site feels more responsive now…
