Max props and best wishes for a speedy recovery to police Sergeant Kimberly Munley, who ended the shooting spree in Fort Hood with four well-placed rounds even after having herself been wounded:

“She was born and bread to be a police officer. If you were ever to be in a fight, she’d be the first person to stand up next to you and back you up. She’s a tough cookie.”

Munley’s toughness and grace under pressure were on display Thursday when she and her partner responded within three minutes of reported gunfire, said Army Lt. Gen. Bob Cone.

Munley, who had been trained in active-response tactics, rushed into the building and confronted the shooter as he was turning a corner, Cone said.

“It was an amazing and an aggressive performance by this police officer,” Cone said.

Munley was only a few feet from Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan when she opened fire.

Wounded in the exchange of bullets, the 34-year-old Munley was reported in stable condition at a local hospital.

The diminutive Munley – she stands 5-foot-4 and weighs about 120 pounds – served as a cop in Wrightsville Beach, N.C., before she moved to Texas to enlist in the military, friends said…

“She’s the happiest, sweetest, most fun-loving girl you’d ever want to be friends with – and never want to cross,” Peterson said.

Clearly.

  • Girls who aren’t afraid of guns and who in fact know how to use them. What’s not to love right?

Thoughts and prayers for her and her family.

    • Police Sergeant Munley – A true American hero. She and all others from the fairer sex who do the tough work each day.

When I was in Fallujah, you knew you could count on the Female Marines becuase they HAD to be twice as good to get recognition. As a Supply type, I had a counterpart on the USMC side who was ALL MARINE, and happened to be of the fairer sex. She was a good shipmate and she liked that as a Older Seabee, she could talk to me like a Father figure as many of the younger types would look to hit on her.

Follow this link to an article from Glamour Magazine (not that I read it regularly) called ” The war’s deadliest day for U.S. women ”

Three Female Marines killed and 11 wounded, all while outside Fallujah doing the duty they dedicated thier lives to -Read the artical and be in awe of these Warriors – SEMPER FI !!!

    Note to Police Sergeant Munley.
Hang tough kiddo, there’s about 200 million people praying for your speedy recovery.

    Ya done good!

Note to Chief of PD, Fort Hood.
    1. Promote her. As of yesterday.
    2. Decorate her for valor. Today.
    3. Tell her lucky fellow to kiss her.
    Immediately, and often.

For all of us. And because she’s, well, amazing.

    Our heroine.

    Best wishes, indeed.

I’m confused, though. The local cops had to subdue a shooter on the base? It says she went to Texas to enlist, but then refers to her as a police officer throughout. Contract police? MP?

    • George P

I’m confused too. One story says the military has sent so many MPs overseas that they’ve hired civilians to police stateside bases. She was supposedly directing traffic nearby when the shooting started and used some advanced training to go into attack-the-gunman mode.

I read that her husband is a “soldier” at Fort Bragg, but I can’t find any stories with details on her supposed attempt to enlist in the Army.

Whatever her background, I agree 100 percent with Grandpa.

Sgt. Munley enlisted in the Army after school, serving at Ft. Hood for several years before leaving military service and joining the Wrightsville Beach NC police force where her father was mayor (and now tackle shop operator).

She then went back to Texas, joining the local civilian police force wherein she is an advanced fireams instructor and SWAT team member, becoming part of the contractual unit providing base security in this “gun-free” military zone (troops can only carry guns onbase during training exercises).

Grampa Bluewater: On recommendation #3 – her husband is a Special Forces operator whom she met at Ft. Hood, and they are in the process of pulling up stakes to relocated to Ft. Bragg where he has just been reassigned. I’m sure he’ll do his duty by her!

    A great, brave cop!

    And, a military veteran.

    A true “sheepdog.”

Thank you Sgt. Munley, you saved many lives.

Dangerous things come in small packages. Hope she gets well fast.

$5 bucks says she tried to enlist in the MP’s but was turned down because of her size.

This just in, Obama says Ft. Hood cop acted “stupidly.”

    • xairboss

I can see the headlines now: “Obama named police officer of the year for his courageous, albeit unsolicited, advice to heroine in Fort Hood shootings.”

  • virgil xenophon

Cool under pressure=good tng + personality type. She was obviously the right person at the right time….and what Grampa Bluewater said.

  • Scott

When you are racking and stacking heros this year, she comes out at the top. Not to denigrate other contenders, but she had a choice, and wasn’t taking a bunch of folks along on the ride to save her own butt. She, like others on that day, in that place, ran to the sound of gunfire. Some might say she was just doing her duty. I would imagine she would say the same. But like a revered American said, “Duty is the sublimest word in the English language.”

  • SFC D

Grampa, you covered it. Warriors come in all sizes and sexes. This is a true warrior.

  • Mike Myers

Some folks run to the sound of guns–others run away or “don’t jump to conclusions”.

She’s a runner–and from having put four rounds in him–a gunner.

  • twofivezulu

Anyone know what kind of weapons or the ranges involved? I’m guessing Sgt Munley had a .38 or 9mm at fairly close range, and fully jacketed rounds since he’s still with us. If I hit someone four times with one of my 1911′s they’d be picking him up in pieces.

    • Mongo

Guessing .40 S&W, as is customary with many PD these days; .45 double stacked grip is a tad large for smaller paws. Properly loaded the .40′s got some pretty good whoop-ass to it.

  • Byron

I sincerely hope that Officer Munley and her SpecFor husband have many children; these are genes that HAVE to be passed on!

    BZ, young lady, BZ!

  • Too bad she’s not single….

  • equalizer

Great work by Sgt Munley. But who was her partner? All we ever hear about is “Sgt Munley and her partner.” Didn’t her (male) partner also participate in taking down Hasan, or was he just standing around watching things unfold? Doesn’t he also deserve the label “hero”? Are we sure it was Munley and not her “partner” who “took down” Hasan? Is the after-action report completed? Have ballistics confirmed which officer fired the crucial shots? Might there be some political correctness running amok here, whereby the female officer is given all the credit as a hero, while the male officer remains just an unnamed “partner”?
