This will be he most ludicrous trial in history. The only thing more ludicrous will be hearing Obama answer questions from the press on it. At least this will provide all American’s to see just what they elected. I’m betting the guy gets acquitted. And then the fun really begins ’cause if they let him walk Obama will have to run as a third party candidate on the “I Love Me” party in 2012 as he’d never get his current party’s nomination.
If he’s acquitted it will be because your guys so thoroughly trampled all manner of international law to begin with. It will be interesting to hear what comes out of this. Obama isn’t the one who should be nervous.
“You guys”? I never touched the guy, but if I had, well at least we could exchange water board stories.
Look Alos, you seem ordinarily bright. This has rich potential to descend into the kind of partisan bashing that the CIA show trials were destined to become at the expense of national security and with the risk that the murderer of 3000 people get to go free – a man whose treatment, rough though it might have been saved more American lives. Freeing KSM due prosecutorial ineptitude it might all sell very well at your accustomed fever swamps where despite the lateness of the hour it’s “all Bush, all the time.” But it will go down poorly, I think, with the American people, most of whom feel no need to go looking for targets of two-minute hates and tend to look at enemies who want to kill them more harshly than those who merely disagree with them on single-payer health care.
The whole thing is as rushed and stupid as the pipe dream of shutting down Guantanamo in a year’s time, and I very much fear that it will be as competently executed. I’d feel better if the current administration had demonstrated any kind of real competence in the last nine months, but they haven’t and for “your” side it’s lose-lose. If they pull it off, it will be the kind of victory that repudiates the attacks on Bush, and if they don’t they let a mass murderer go free on the “principal” of evening a political score with people who are no longer in the game. KSM gets to make his toxic case publicly to an adoring crowd of those who’d love to tear you to shreds if they got the chance, and you get to pay for his microphone. And even if he does go free, I’ll lay odds he has a rendezvous with a Hellfire missile in his first month out.
There’s a long and established history of military commissions in this country, and Holder is taking on an enormous risk, personally and politically with this move, intended as it is only to placate the chattering classes and “world opinion” that cares more about seeing America in the dock than KSM. It’s seven different kinds of dumb.
The GOP deserved to lose its monopoly on political power between 2006 and 2008. It would be comedic, if it weren’t so tragic, how eager the Democratic Party seems to give it back again.
Alos:
I’ve got to stop thinking you actually want to engage in thoughtful analysis. It is stupid of me to believe that to be any part of your reason for coming here.
Let’s say for a minute you are correct that “you guys” so screwed the pooch that this guy walks. Is it really in the security interests of this nation for “you guys” (now I’m talking your team) to allow this to happen? Damn there I go again, thinking you might be interested in actual debate.
Lex: I’ll shutup now and stop inciting this discussion as it is clear it ain’t going anywhere taht will add to the quality of the discussion.
I read about this this morning and I can only say this. )&*^%^%^##&^^*(*&^&$#$@$#^T&^HVOU&*&*&TU&G* HOLY SMOKES! If NYC wasn’t a circus before, it will be when this starts. EVERY FREAKIN’ LIBTARD IS GOING TO CRAWLING OUT OF THE SEWERS! CAN YOU SAY PRIME TERRORIST TARGET? WHOEVER THOUGHT THIS ONE UP MUST HAVE HAD A LOBOTOMY FOR BREAKFAST! WITH ANY LUCK THE FAT TURD WILL DROP DEAD OF A HEART ATTACK BEFORE THIS GETS STARTED!
For a more reasoned, but harsher and politically correct response, please check Rudy Guiliani’s response. Sorry for shouting on Lex’s board, but this really does suck.
For those who had put their hand up before the mid 80s, or played in the CMS world in the following decade: I found this “connector piece” for comment…
I just don’t get the thinking anymore. Any of these guys would like nothing more than to get martyred for their cause. Soooo, lets give them a stage, in NEW YORK of all places for them to dance their macabre Kabuki theater. And I do mean Kabuki, what with the full beard that was absent while he was hiding and still conducting operations in Pakistan.
He and others are proud of what they did, they bragged about it before and after being captured. Of course, now it will be “under duress” and he got water boarded (by the way Lex where did you go to SERE? I didn’t get in SERE but know many others who did)In any case, an enemy combatant, terrorist who admitted on multiple occassions of being responsible for the death of 1993 americans, friends and coworkers included. NOW, we’re going to give him a platform to spew more of his propaganda? What kinda freaking world are we living in? They should have but a bullet in his head while at a location prior to GITMO. This is just Bull Crap.
new commander’s intent: KIP. Kill In Place. Interrogate at location, Kill them and then move on. Beats the hell out of bringing them stateside, granting them more rights than a US Soldier has under UCMJ in some cases and make a mockery out of the whole process. Puck it. Just kill them all, let God sort them out. Or Allah, depending on preference.
Me again. Hey, miss that edit doohicky. Need to correct the number in previous post.
I suspect that Holder, who is a rabid leftist from the 1960s, is setting this up to pacify the extreme left wing of the Democrat party. They were promised a show trial of the Bush administration, and they want it delivered. Ever since the threatened impeachment of President Clinton, they’ve wanted a ‘tu quoque’ payback against the Republicans, and they think this is their opportunity. Very few of these people realize that the present situation vis a vis the United States and the Islamic Mid Eastern countries makes this an extremely hazardous undertaking for the United States to do. Respect for the power of the United States is slipping ever lower in the Mid East. They think our government has become wusses, and that they can ignore anything we threaten in the way of retaliation. “Don’t you dare do such and such or we’ll sanction you,” isn’t much of a threat. Not like Reagan sending a flight of war planes over Libya to put the frighteners on Ghadaffi.
Obama would never dare to do that. He’d rather hold hands with murderers.
Marianne
(pulls on his nomex suit and hopes it is enough)
I have to play devils advocate here. As much as it galls me to do this
BUT
This may not be as stupid a move as it seems. What do these thugs want? Martyrdom. Martyrdom for their cause. Maybe, just MAYBE (gawd, I hope this is the thought behind it), the thinking was that if they ignore the terrorist or jihadist aspect of it, treat it as just another thug killing people, convict him of just plain old murder, then give him life without parole in, oh, Soledad, or maybe a hog farm in Arkansas (GO PIG!), it will take away that cachet of being a martyr.
Do I believe that? Not really. I don’t think the capons can reason that well though. Not to mention, I don’t think they have really thought out the security issues involved in painting that big red X on NYC again.
I got a great idea. Take all of the NYC $500K+ Obama donors, and draw the juror pool from that list. Kinda like a night in the Lincoln bedroom, ‘cept this one gets some unexpected visitors at your next Hamptons pool party.
Joe,
among a number of concerns, one of the bigger ones is that we are conferring constitutional rights on a person who is not entitled to them. Why would we do that? People go through some horrendous experiences in order to get to this country, wheter legally or illegaly in order to partake in the american dream. I’m talking swimming across rivers in eastern europe, hiding in trunks, jumping the wall, spending years in political asylum camps, then finally getting that coveted visa to emigrate to the US. And then spending years fighting to get their kids from behind the iron curtain.
But, since they are in NY, how bout the jury is pulled from Cantor Fitzgerald, and NYPD NYFD. That should work
I have to agree with you on that, Claudio. Heck, I’m not sure what the Capon in Chief wants to do with the guy is legal. Don’t the various conventios say that military prisoners may not, and will not, be held or tried by civilian authorities? As I said, I was playing devils advocate and trying my hardest to give him the benefit of the doubt.
I’m with Marianne – it’s a ploy to punish the CIA & the Bush Administration with the side effect of distracting everyone from the mess this WH crew is making out of everything they touch. It’s all politics and has nothing to do with justice. Military tribunals would (hopefully) be swift and over in a few. Constitutional protection (!?!) for terrorists will make it long and drawn out, with the added bonus of camera time for the Won. I’m sure they haven’t given a thought to the cost and danger for NYC. So very disgusting!
Only an idiot, incompetent, or someone intent on harming our country would suggest or approve this dastardly deed.
Which confirms my suspicions about the current administration.
They really do not comprehend the concept of war or winning. They seem to treat this like it is a Chicago mob hit man, one with connections at City Hall whom they desire to see sprung for some flimsy excuse.
Can we tell who are out “enemies foreign and domestic” yet?
I have come to the conclusion that there must be a reason for the election of the imPOTUS. He is the proverbial 2×4 with which the citizenry of Lotus Land must be stroked on the forehead in order to get their attention so that they will recognize the slippery slope that the nation has been.
