Very funny. Poor gerbil or hamster. Is there a difference?

  • As a former (Army) recruiter, I’m willing to bet there’s a fair chance that wasn’t even the weirdest call the recruiter had that week.

I haven’t heard that in a few years. Made me laugh till stuff ran out of eyes, nose and mouth! ;-)

Will send this to new CO (and COB) of our local Navy Recruiting District. He had his CoC on Tuesday, so just mebbe he hasn’t heard it before. Thank you Liberace, wherever you are!

As far as recruiting is concerned, it’s hard core. Long hours, and if you don’t make your contract quota, it gets real ugly. Remember, every new white hat you see was produced by a local recruiting office.

So what happens to the recruiter when the recruited turn out to not be all they seemed? I’ve a friend, scored an 89 on his ASFAB, smart kid, just don’t know that he’s got the mindset to handle military life. Been trying to offer advice but it’s not really taking. Kid is more a free spirit, more about getting the job done rather than procedure, tends to not get the uniform is supposed to be exact for a reason, wants to do his part but is smart enough to understand why basic is harsh and probably won’t accept it.

Hate to think the recruiter gets a talking to over this, should the kid wash out, but on the other hand shouldn’t the recruiter have spotted these traits?

Just curious, I’m far too old and have absolutely no desire to become a recruiter. Still, has to be kind of like being a teacher, you can see the success later on and feel a bit of pride that you helped make it happen. And you can see the other side and wonder if you’d done all you could.

I must admit that was as funny as the “Bricklayers Lament” that I heard years ago (bricks must be replaced at top of building; worker loads up a barrelful on a pulley; after job is done “there are a lot of bricks left over”; fills barrel then goes down to ground and unties the rope. Then the fun begins).

And I have to congratulate the caller for the incredible self control and straight delivery of that delightful yarn.
