Somebody's Got Some 'Splaining To Do

The world has stopped getting warmer, defying the complex models that predicted anthropogenic global warming to continue until it reached crisis proportions:

Global warming appears to have stalled. Climatologists are puzzled as to why average global temperatures have stopped rising over the last 10 years. Some attribute the trend to a lack of sunspots, while others explain it through ocean currents.

At least the weather in Copenhagen is likely to be cooperating. The Danish Meteorological Institute predicts that temperatures in December, when the city will host the United Nations Climate Change Conference, will be one degree above the long-term average.

Otherwise, however, not much is happening with global warming at the moment. The Earth’s average temperatures have stopped climbing since the beginning of the millennium, and it even looks as though global warming could come to a standstill this year.

Of course, that’s not really as interesting as this post from “Watt’s Up With That,” a AGW-skeptical site which purports to be in receipt of emails hacked from the servers at the Climate Research Unit in Britain.

Dear Ray, Mike and Malcolm,
Once Tim’s got a diagram here we’ll send that either later today or first thing tomorrow.

I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd (sic) from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline. Mike’s series got the annual land and marine values while the other two got April-Sept for NH land N of 20N. The latter two are real for 1999, while the estimate for 1999 for NH combined is +0.44C wrt 61-90. The Global estimate for 1999 with data through Oct is +0.35C cf. 0.57 for 1998. Thanks for the comments, Ray.

Cheers
Phil

There’s more there, and more yet to be revealed. This could be nothing at all.

But it could be huge.

Update: Bolt has more, and RealClimate responds.

Maybe its because there is water in our air, unlike, say, um… the models.

Y’all are all wrong. The slowing of global warming is directly related to the decrease in manned aviation flight hours. See, all them guys are not zorching around at FL 450 turning kerosene into hot air. Stick your hand behind one and see how toasty it gets – LOTS of hot air. Some up front too – depending. With the Navy guys only getting 10-11 hrs per month and the Air Force going with early airframe retirement and more drones, the HAHA effect is diminished (high altitude hot air for the dweebies).

This explains what a pile of climatology texts might miss since it’s too simple:

    Oops….

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!

I am beginning to think there is something to global warming. I started thinking this way around Halloween….

Turner Classic Movies ran the 1958 sci-fi classic “The Blob” which I have never seen. (One of Steve McQueen’s first movies!) For those similarly deprived of truly truly amazing low budget cinema and fine acting, the plot begins as a meteorite lands in the back woods. It contains some sort of ooze that eats people and gets larger, sneaking around town and consuming the unwary. (Spoiler alert!) Steve McQueen, his girlfriend, and the obligatory innocent young child are trapped in a diner that the blob has, well, blobbed itself over in an attempt to eat them. They are about to be consumed when Steve McQueen shoots a CO2 fire extinguisher at it and it is repelled by the cold.

Hang with me here – I am getting to the end of this…

The townspeople scavenge up all the fire extiguishers and freeze the blob with the CO2. The Air Force then flies the frozen lump to the arctic and drops it on an ice floe where it will stay forever… “As long as the Artic doesn’t melt” says Steve McQueen’s character.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I submit to you that this is actually a documentary. We do know that 1998 was the warmest year since 1958, and there was ice melt in the Artic. I think the blob got loose and started to come back south. We do know that two years later, in 2000, Al Gore lost his presidential bid and began to put on a lot of weight….

What do you want the models to say? What will get me the most grant money? Scientists are not necessarily beyond whoring themselves and their ideas. You STILL have to pay for the summer salary, keep the research assistants/associates and grad students paid.

It has been a long while since I’ve really read any of this. I get very tired of the hippies screaming we are all going to die (that also includes members of several governments such as the UK, Japan, and of course US). But if CO2 increases, then the partial pressure will increase which will force more into the oceans, yes? Then you will get plankton blooms that will use the CO2. I don’t think we have a very good feel for all the feedback mechanisms. This may be what we learn from the evidence showing the models are crap, and the in situ data counters the forecasts. Having lived in that world, everybody will believe a model, everyone will question collected data. ESPECIALLY if it counters a possible money train.

Can’t be true. No ways Jose…because you KNOW global warming is caused by man. And how do you explain the halt in warming, when you take in consideration the economic development in china over the last decade. Its got to be man right. Get rid of the heretic who atributes this to lack of sunspots.

On a serious note this only reaffirms the fact that, just as for Communists, Facists, Islamic jihadists and Greenies, there is no limit to the lies and deception true believers will go to to implement their own perverted vision (The Vision of the Anointed” as Thomas Sowell puts it)of Nirvana/Heaven here on Earth with themselves as the secular implementers of Kingdom Come–only it comes here on Earth, implemented, of course, by those chosen self-selected few who interpret for we poor, dumb, Eloi the latest version of God/science’s vision, natch.

  • AT, does that help put out the spot bushfires from lightning strikes (no rain in this area – although nearby a thundery shower) Oz – you’re standing in it:

GEorgeV- that is the best laugh I have had in quite a while. Kudos.

  • George V…”The townspeople scavenge up all the fire extiguishers and freeze the blob with the CO2″…couldn’t do that now…probably all get in trouble with OSHA for using fire extinguishers in a way not specifically authorized…also get in trouble with several unions which would assert blog-freezing as their exclusive territory. Not to mention EPA issues with all that CO2 release.

They’d have to just report the matter to Homeland Security, which would tell Congress they needed more money if they’re going to have to add blob-fighting to their mission. Congress is still debating the matter (especially which extinguishing/freezing agent should be used instead of CO2 and which companies get the enormous fire-extinguisher contracts) when the blob reaches Washington DC.

David, wasn’t there just a kerfuffle in NJ or somewhere where some union leader declared that the Boy Scouts had no right/business to clear a walking/bike path of stones & debris, etc., in that that was a job for the UNION!?? Ie, not “specifically authorized.”

virgil, I believe the kerfuffle was in Allentown, PA. I just read an article about that last night. The union whiner resigned his position, as did several other, iirc.

Regarding the data dump from the CRU and the emails contained therein, I’ve read a few articles, blogs, and message board discussions about that. The AGW activists just claim that the emails are being misinterpreted/taken out of context. This should be front page news, in my opinion. Last I checked though, my opinion doesn’t hold much sway.

I have a feeling that if fourteen inches of snow fell in Bermuda tomorrow that the hippies would ignore that and keep on yammering about the one degree increase in temperature in Copenhagen.
