West Point is the “enemy camp” according to MSNBC’s Chris Matthews.

Well, I guess we always knew who our friends were.

    Just who are his “friends”?

If WP is the enemy camp then Chris Matthews is what he is, convicted out of his own mouth.

    His oath is to?

  • pdxjim

I guess his leg was not “tingling” last night.

  • Did anyone watch the clip?

I’m no fan of Chris Matthews or MSNBC, but what he was saying was that West Point could euphemistically be considered an enemy camp fro Obama’s point of view. It was a figure of speech intended to convey that for a leftist Democrat, West Point–presumably a conservative stronghold–could be considered a most hostile audience, an ‘enemy camp’. The point they were discussing was why he would consider giving this important speech in unfriendly territory.

This kind of quote mining doesn’t reflect well on those who choose to bend the truth

I don’t think there is a lot of wiggle room for Mr. Matthews. He clearly sees all things conservative or military as the enemy. Not just of a leftist agenda, but of his vision of America.

And, this shouldn’t need to be pointed out, the President IS the Commander-in-Chief of our armed forces. If he, and his supporters, see the military as ‘the enemy’ we are in big trouble.

I do have to say that I take the view of Jefferson and others that the Army (by extention all military) MAY become the enemy if wielded by a corrupt administration. I would hope in that case that all would remember their oath:

I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.”

Which is to the Constitution and not the president, or an officer. The problem is I can’t see many E-2s or -3s telling an O-4 or higher “I’m sorry sir, I think that is an illegal order and I will not obey it.”

        forgot to add: http://www.politicsdaily.com/2009/12/02/video-chris-matthews-calls-west-point-enemy-camp/

for a slightly longer clip, and then some spin by Mr. Matthews.

      • Joe:

For reference (and it is germane as we are talking about cadets and future officers) the oath of office for an officer states:

“I, (name) , do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.” (5 U.S.C. § 3331, Oath of Office)

Ah, thank you. I would hope that the officers would also remember their oaths to support the Constitution. I suspect that it would be somewhat easier for an officer to question an order than, oh, a recruit not long out of basic.

      Tailspin,
Why would anybody presume that West Point is a “conservative stronghold”? The student body is made up of appointees and nominees of the Senate and House; the majority of whom are democrats who are mostly anti-American. Visit with Phib for awhile and don’t presume that the nasty racism on display at Annapolis is unique. A critter like the Won can probably expect that the USMA and USNA are alike in selecting seriously stupid morons for admission in job lots and thus expect them to applaud stupidity on an international scale.

      • aeroeng

Frankly, I think it’s pretty narrow-minded to say that those who are Democrats are “mostly anti-American.” Just because someone has a different view of the best way to run the country doesn’t make them unpatriotic. I may not have agreed with a lot of President Bush’s policies, but I believe that he thought he was doing what was right for the country at the time and I certainly would not call him anti-American just because I didn’t agree with his policies.

How does one “see” warmth and skepticism on a TV feed? And the other commentator agrees with CM. The liberetards are laying the groundwork for justification of the imminent defeat. CM can always point back to the lack of “warmth” as the reason the 18 month timeline didn’t achieve TOTAL VICTORY!

  • Matthews was clearly expressing what he believes to be the opinion of core Obama supporters: that the American military is their enemy. The question of whether he personally believes this or not may not be definitively be answered by the quote, but given his overall set of positions, I think the odds are pretty high that he does.

If a commentator with a strong reputation for neutrality had made such a comment, then we might believe he was stating a conclusion about the beliefs of others, rather than an opinion he himself necessarily agreed with. But Matthews is not such a commentator.

This is simply one more piece of evidence that the core members of the “progressive” movement consider themselves at war with a substantial part of American society–including, but not limited to, America’s military.

  • Quite an assumption to make – that it was a hostile, unfriendly room. Who are these people to assume they know the hearts and minds of these young men & women. Just because they themselves can’t see both sides of an issue doesn’t mean that there aren’t others who can – and who make choices that resonate for them and only them. Who knows how many of those cadets voted for Obama…while at the same time answering the noble call of military service.

    Bending the truth indeed.

Preaching to the choir, but why WP? Coercion of the occupants to love, worship, and adore the immaculate WunWhoWon (dozing off notwithstanding), and to show we unwashed masses that crossing the aisle is in his toolkit.

CM and gang are practically the personal emissaries of WWW, with the WH even having a direct e-mail contact into the studio. Nothing like being connected to His Majesty on high.

Tailspin is right–but so is david foster. If Matthews wasn’t such a “homer” for Obama no one would ever rise to the bait.

One has to only visit some discussion forums such as AirWarriors.com to realize that the thinking of our young warriors, be they Academy trained or ROTC/OCS graduates, is not lockstep conservative. Many, even seasoned serving officers, stray to the left. I do say “stray” as a bad thing, just that I prefer to remain a little more to the “right”. It is refreshing to realize that we, as a nation, do not require a litmus test of our young for them to serve.

    • Flugelman

I do say “stray” should read ” I do not say “stray””. Lousy proofreader on staff here…

  • Mike Myers

I try to read Obama’s speeches rather than listen to them.
If you do that you soon come to realize that his reputation as an orator is based more on style than substance.

I was struck by two lines in the speech that speak to his “support for the troops”. He has “seen the terrible cost of war” by having his 4 am photo op at Dover AFB, and bygum he has “signed a letter of condolence” to the family of every serviceman who’d lost his life. I recall back in the day when Bush was subject to great criticism for his alleged failure to actually meet and talk with the families of the deceased.

One might well think that these pathetic attempts by Obama to gain “street cred” with the cadets should have elicited wild cheers of approbation from the Corps of Cadets.

Just another “oopsie” for Obama’s speechwriters–it didn’t work.

    • Mongo

I’m wondering, Mike, if we’ll see POTUS make a surprise visit to the troops at Christmas dinner in the AF; sans pre-arrival hype.

IIRC, Dubbya went ‘no notice’ and nearly undiscovered, except by a jumbo crew crossing the pond. “Hey, isn’t that..?” “Yep.” “Wonder where…” “We don’t know and we don’t care.” His arrival at the podium went well, as I recall.

I can’t speak for others, but if Chris Matthews’ heart was on fire I wouldn’t pi$$ down his throat. But, just to show that I hold no grudges, once he dies I’ll be happy to stand in line to water his headstone.

He makes no pretense of being fair and impartial. I can live with that. But I make no pretense of being able to stand the bottom feeding, scum sucking, low life slime.

    • Snake Eater

All you need to know about Chris Matthews is that back in the day, along with a lot of other whimps, he choose to serve in the utterly useless Peace Corps as a way of avoiding the military …his spots haven’t changed. Best

      • Ron Snyder

Mr. Matthews is very proud of his PC experience, references it often, and believes he contributed more to the world than had he joined the evil, knuckle dragging military. Chris has commented more than once about his superior moral/ethical values.

Such a shame that the marketplace values him so much.

Here in Jacksonville, I see many cars with Red and Blue windshield decals bearing the “Oh and Joe ’08″ on the rear bumpers, so I don’t know where the left gets the idea that we all dislike the President.

Does anyone know where I can get a “01.18.12″ sticker at?

    Sorry for the double tap.

Hey, December 12th is almost upon us. He WAS behind enemy lines!

    Go Navy, beat Army!

  • WESTPAC spy

I thought Chris Matthews was exactly right, from the Obama perspective.

It’s doubtful that Obama ever visited a military installation before he was voted into the US Senate. As far as I can tell, only two people in his circle of friends ever had a reason to regularly visit Army facilities in the past.

When they were planting bombs to bring the war home on behalf of the Viet Cong.

If you’re just one of the guys in Obama’s neighborhood, you’re far more likely to have “served” in the Weather Underground furthering the cause of international socialism than in uniform. So in his neck of the woods the military is the enemy camp. In every sense of the word.
