A great game played in two halves. The deep satisfaction of having won the only game that really counts. Of singing your alma mater’s song last.
And Coach Niumatalolo is a class act: It’s only a football game. They’re all heroes.
You bet.

Our will is to keep the torch of freedom burning for all. To this solemn purpose we call on the young, the brave, the strong, and the free. Heed my call, Come to the sea. Come Sail with me." -- John Paul Jones "Pardon him, Theodotus; he is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature" --George Bernard Shaw, "Caesar and Cleopatra" "And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music."--Friedrich Nietzsche "A kind Providence has placed in our breasts a hatred of the unjust and cruel, in order that we may preserve ourselves from cruelty and injustice. They who bear cruelty, are accomplices in it. The pretended gentleness which excludes that charitable rancour, produces an indifference which is half an approbation. They never will love where they ought to love, who do not hate where they ought to hate."--Edmund Burke “You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours.”--General Sir Charles Napier "Μολὼν λαβέ" -- Leonidas "Blogito Ergo Sum" -- Neptunus Lex Amazon AssociateFor the Effort!Winnar!![]() Subscribe![]() CategoriesPagesTagsacademy

Even the commentator, a professional talker by all accounts, upon hearing Coach Niumatalolo’s take on the game, said, “I can’t add anything to that!”
The Coach had just given the thought that members of both Academies would be going to Iraq or Afghanistan and that, after-all, this was, “just a football game,” with tears streaming down his face. Indeed, Coach. Thank you!
God, but I love this game. This is the only College football game that I am committed to watching every year. It’s a great game, made better with a Navy win, but nonetheless, a great game for both schools.
May God bless all the future officers, and give them the strength, courage, and conviction to lead our young soldiers and sailors into harm’s way.
I had found myself rooting for Army only so they would go to a bowl game. I think Air Force is going to one and that would mean all three in bowl games. But Coach Niumatalolo’s words at the end summed it all up and made thought of any bowl game somewhat foolish in the greater context. A good game played well by both teams.
My other thought was that they are all so young looking…was a time they weren’t. Was a time.
I’m starting to feel bad for Army… eight in a row!
Btw, I lost my Internet connection with the game before the post-game interviews, so I missed the coach’s comments. If anybody else did, here it is: http://www.cbssports.com/video/player/play/collegefootball/DQx4PnSa_vsDJ30KQTxOK_XR2MmzudMf (after the QB interview).
Thanks for the link FBL, I had missed it also. The coach has the right perspective.
Well, they COULD organize a Kabul Bowl. Pour le sport.
Thoughts on USNA, regardless of the score:
Did the color guard have the achieve the mandatory quota of diversity?
How many of the football players are there strictly because of football skills? How many of them will actually graduate? Would you want your son or daughter to have them as a Division Officer?
I think the Army is far less into illegal racial quotas and recruiting athletes for the sake of winning games. They want to win wars.
John,
USNA has been in the top 3 (#1 several times) out of all division I schools in the nation for graduation rates of football players for the past few years. That says a lot about the coaching staff for bringing in the right guys and a lot about the young men for making it through.
Dude, can we have one freaking thing without bringing up diversity? Please…it has it’s place most definitely but come on. It’s just a football game, it was great and leave it alone
Well, this zoomie had (and always has) to root for Army out of respect for Dad’s memory (42nd Rainbow, WWII) and that of my 1st cousin and cousin-in law–both WP ’43 and roomies–one arty & one USAF. Sad to see the Black Knights of the Hudson in such a state. I realize the Army is used to trench warfare, but they need to get somebody in familiar with a thing called the forward pass….
As a Pac 10 fan, I can say that I am pleased that UCLA is now guaranteed a bowl game, I am happy. As someone who has the honor of seeing the flag raised every morning at The Academy… Go Navy!!! Great win!!!!
The Army-Navy Game is the only football game that I watch. The rest have no meaning at all. And I have the scars on my butt to back that up!
Glenn Cassel … “The Army-Navy game is the only football game that I watch” all the way through, also. It’s always so moving in so many ways — to watch these young men, the flower of America’s youth, fight furiously yet fairly for their team, their military, their families and us. And to do it so honorably toward each other as well as for their school.
If one wants to sum up the uniqueness of what is best about America, this game sums it up. Thanks Army. Thanks Navy. Gentlemen all the way.
We’re still in safe hands, thanks be to God.

Slightly OT. As most know Bama beat the Gators. There is a guy in my church, up from Florida two years ago that seems to get the Gators into every announcement he makes. Usually saying something like “I’m not going to talk about the Gators winning.”
After the game, he wouldn’t even answer his phone.
Myself and some of my roommates had the pleasure of inadvertently running into a group of both Army and Navy alums up in Austin. The two chapters get together every year to watch the games. The loser of the previous year’s game organizes and funds the event (ouch Army). Needless to say it was about as much fun as we could have had without being in Philly.
I’m glad for the win, but it was a pretty ugly game. I hope they don’t play that way against Missouri on the 31st. Second half looked a little more like Navy’s usual game, but still a little rough.
