I’ve been reached out and touched by a nice man who works for the US Coast Guard, and is offering our humble community the chance to win 1) a hooded Coast Guard blue sweatshirt, or 2) a Coastie blue t-shirt. It’ll be a simple thing, tomorrow morning at 0730 West Coast time I’ll update this post with a question, the first person to correctly answer will win the sweatshirt, and the second will win the t-shirt.
Did I mention that it was free?
Check back in tomorrow morning!
In the mean time, you can keep yourself busy watching Coastie videos.
(In keeping with recent FTC rule changes, the Coast Guard has requested that I provide full disclosure to my audience in regards to my relationship with their brand.
I was contacted directly by the US Coast Guard who asked for my participation in the way outlined above.)
Update: Here’s the question – “What governmental department does the US Coast Guard operate under during peacetime?”

Careful, before you know it, you’ll be signing up as an Auxie. Just for the flight time that’s in it.

I’d consider joining, but I understand you have to be at least 6′ tall in order to enlist…..
AW1 Tim, I thought that if you believe you are 6′ tall that you would qualify.
Tim,
There are special waivers for squids who are experienced in aircraft that have their engines mounted upside down.
You mean like the C-130?
Snark…….
Will it be a new sweatshirt or a recycled Navy hand me down sweatshirt?
Will it revert to a navy sweatshirt during times of war?
Just asking..
Surely you mean Navy sweatshirt!
First we’re allowing them to post here, now we allow Coastie propaganda. The place is gone. Gone, I’m telling you.
What’s that Aussie time? A USCG hoodie would be quite the novelty down here…
WOW! I just looked up the price on those things! That’s $37.00 sweatshirt, so that is a very, very generous act on the part of the Coast Critters. Thank You very much, USCG!
That’s 0530, Hawaii time. Whaddya think, I’m in the Army or something? This contest is severly biased toward the east coasters, who can wake up at the crack of 1030 to chime in.
I’ll check in around 0900(your time) to see the winner.
Hmmm. Last thing I heard our Coastie friends doing in the Sandy Eggo area was ramming civilian small craft. Trying to distract us from their bad publicity, are they?
Just an accident to be sure, but really bad press when you are in the “safety” business and all.
The Coasties do good work, and I am proud to have them as fellow members of the Sea Services. Not nearly as much fun to pick on as the Misguided Children.
HOMELAND SECURITY
homeland security
DHS
Department of Homeland Security
Wow, that didn’t take very long.
Fun, thanks. I’ll follow up with the USCG to get yez first two the goodies.
AARGH! Curse my slow typing skills!
I am one of those former USCG guys. Living in Wisconsin,I could use the extra hoodie with this winter so far..
I am in Mauston, where are you?
I am over in Appleton.
Are you waiting for the nastiness we are? Pehaps up to a 1/4 inch of ice, with up to 10 inches of snow on top of that? Merry Christmas!
Thanks, Lex. Although ex-USN myself, I will proudly parade the puddle pirate prize.
This proud retired Coastie will vouch for the quality and durability of the CG blue sweatshirts with the arched white text on the front. They really are comfortable, too. I hope that’s what the winner’s getting.
Hey, Lex, y’know how we used to define our service? “The Coast Guard is that hard nucleus around which the Navy forms in times of war.”
Prior to being part of Homeland Security they were part of the Department of Transportation.
You are very correct. So probably a softball question like the give-a-away question was, but does anyone here know why the USCG is not in the DOD?
It was never intended to be part of the Navy when it was established in 1790. Intent was to create a maritime service to enforce customs laws and was initially assigned to the Treasury, I think. Original name was
Revenue Service, AKA Revenue-Marine.
Greater flexibility in law enforcement that wouldn’t exist under DOD.
Before DOT we were in Treasury.
T-shirt arrived earlier this week, very nice! Thanks again Lex!
