Our will is to keep the torch of freedom burning for all. To this solemn purpose we call on the young, the brave, the strong, and the free. Heed my call, Come to the sea. Come Sail with me." -- John Paul Jones "Pardon him, Theodotus; he is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature" --George Bernard Shaw, "Caesar and Cleopatra" "And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music."--Friedrich Nietzsche "A kind Providence has placed in our breasts a hatred of the unjust and cruel, in order that we may preserve ourselves from cruelty and injustice. They who bear cruelty, are accomplices in it. The pretended gentleness which excludes that charitable rancour, produces an indifference which is half an approbation. God bless nurses. They are special.
Am very glad that this article of Michael’s has received such widespread attention.
When the original article was published, I had sent it to a number of friends asking them to read it. We have such an extraordinary bunch of folks out there serving our country.
Kudos to Mr. Yon, and a “Tip of the Jar” would not hurt his feelings either.
Thanks Lex,
You cant pay for that. Extraordinary indeed.
I am humbled. By Major Lehker’s compassion and by the strength of Danny’s family.
And to think that Michael has been over in Irag & AF for what, almost six years, providing us with a view of what our warriors are doing.
Voluntarily, and on his own dime. In some respects he is like a one-man Soldier’s Angel (which group he supports and has the greatest admiration for).
I do think he is the closest in my generation to Ernie Pyle.
Ron,
I was thinking the same thing the other day. The type talent that they both posses can rarely be duplicated. Something tells me that the way Ernie died , is the way he would have wanted it, had the choice been his.
I’m in Kandahar and one of my crew got hurt in a Rocket Attack. The Medics were awesome and the staff at the CSH (Combat Surigical Hospital) here were etxraordinary.
They got him out to Bagram & then Landstuhl. He is back home and doing well enough to give the staff at the stateside hospital grief….It’s just his way.
GOD BLESS the medical professionals and Micheal Yon for the good work they do.
GC: that is also my understanding.
Ernie, like most of us, had challenges.
However, Ernie felt obligated to cover the troops in the PTO in the same manner as he had in the ETO. Ernie was tired, body & soul, but he did what he believed he owed to the troops. What an exceptional man, and beloved by the troops, though on occasion not by the Powers That Be.
Speaking of Mike, he posed a question to aviators. What better source of expert opinion than here?

There are so many good nurses. They’re almost like teachers. One meets them everywhere. Turns out, we’re surrounded by them.
Lucky for us really.
Awww! Just, Awww!
Yes nurses rock.
Thanks, Lex. That’s an uplifting story. Since the Tarnak farms incident (especially the way it was handled by the Canadian press) I’ve been a bit jaded about Canadians, and this helps.
Our press sucks. All leftie all the time. Especially Mother Corpse, CBC.
I have had the pleasure, as that is the word I wish to use, to work with Canadian forces types thru out my 32 year career. My first exposure was to them was the 4th Canadian Mech Bde in force on force romps across central Germany back in the day, (REFORGER and other exercises) Cheatin’ SOBs they were, but if you ain’t cheatin’ you ain’t trying and they would do whatever the umpires let them get away with or didn’t get caught doing. Later, spent time with them in CFB Valcartier and CFB Gagetown. Great sojers and good fun to be around a Miller time. My unit did plt exchanges with them annually.
Wished I had the chance to jump with them up and get their jump wings but that never panned out.
Our northern neighbors are good and loyal allies (at least those in uniform, not sure about their politicians…). They have been more than pulling their share of the load in AFG for quite a while, with precious little thanks from the media or politicians on either side of the border.
It’s okay to let them win a hockey game once in a while, just to make them feel good.
But, more importantly, their warriors are our brothers (and sisters) in arms and we must support them as well as our own. And we do.
Thanks, neighbors, its the [North] American way!
