Here and There

Here in California, the glitterati are preparing for their annual exercise in self-congratulation. Many paeans will be sung to the bravery of directors that defy convention. Champagne will be spilled.

Over in Iraq, the people are turning out in their millions to vote for a new parliament under the threat of terrorist violence. Blood will be spilled.

Tomorrow, the news media will report on matters great and small. Ink will be spilled.

I wonder which story will get more ink?

Update: The Castle’s BillT reports on a “joyful noise” from Kirkuk.

There is so much we take for granted.

Ink is at the disposal of the Liberal Media…they care for those who provide the $$$$. Human Life is only of interest to them if it brings them the ability to utilze it for their own gain.

The lives of poor Iraqi, beaten into submission by Saddam for 35 years was only of interest to the Liberal Media when they cried ” NO BLOOD FOR OIL and BUSH LIED, PEOPLE DIED. and other such rot…Now that there isn’t an incumbent they are interested in beating up, the success of the IRAQI people is likely placed on the back pages of the newspaper while the likes of Susan Sarandon and others congratulate themselves for thier ability to “entertain” and “enlighten” the world…

The world needs to provide as much attention to the victory won by Americans, Allies & more importantly, The Iraqi people.

What’s more is that Iraq is the most amazing experiment in a global politics in a very long time. Can democracy take hold in the heart of the Middle East, and if so, what will it produce? It may be back pages of the media right now, but this is history being written big time. The conclusion isn’t here yet by a long shot, but whatever happens will likely be a surprise to almost everyone, and have very, very significant consequences for the future of the Middle East, the war on Terror, and US Foreign Policy.

But, let’s face it. For most people those things are boring.

Headline this morning in my local paper laments: “Over 3.5 million viewers won’t be able to watch the Academy Award show.”

    How sad.

    Cheers,

Mitch, I can’t believe you have that attitude. The Oscars are the most important story of the year. Just ask any liberal.

I’m confused. Elections in Iraq? Harry Reid assured us well over a year ago that “the war in Iraq is lost.”

I’d be more interested in the ink those Iraqis use to mark the fingers of those casting ballots. Brings to mind the squealing the Dems make when voter ID issues arise here at home. Something about infringing upon the franchise to require proof of ID, yet we need to show it to get on an airliner ar Amtrak. I guess all those dead voters aren’t really dead, since death is merely a disability.

What is disgusting, and an indictment of our society, is that in Iraq, they will brave bombs, heat, hours in line, death threats, and get around an 80% turn out. Here we have people whine that they can’t find the time to vote at polls they can drive to in safety, be in and out in 15 minutes (if they don’t take advantage of the vote by mail option) and we are doing good to hit 60% in a presidential election. Expect the mid-terms this year to be hovering in the 50% range, and the off year elections do good to hit 40%.

Greyhawk has a great roundup of stories on the election: http://www.mudvillegazette.com/033418.html

One only need look at Drudge to see what the story is.

  • Maybe if we allowed celebratory fire, we’d have bigger turnouts come Election Day.

And safer streets, because the dirtbags wouldn’t be the only ones running around *armed* — you stand a better chance of being killed in a drive-by in DC or Camden than in Baghdad…

Dunno, seems like a grand extravaganza in self congratulatory rhetoric that a distinct subset goes to great lengths to publicize each year.

Funny that, I haven’t really been paying attention for many years now, no matter how loud the howling from the monkey house has been or becomes.

Meh, forgot to add that the Iraqi elections are a story to be writ large due to the tremendous hardships they face just to vote at all.
