"Sign on, young man, and sail with me. The stature of our homeland is no more than the measure of ourselves. Our job is to keep her free. Our will is to keep the torch of freedom burning for all. To this solemn purpose we call on the young, the brave, the strong, and the free. Heed my call, Come to the sea. Come Sail with me." -- John Paul Jones
"Pardon him, Theodotus; he is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature" --George Bernard Shaw, "Caesar and Cleopatra"
"And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music."--Friedrich Nietzsche
"A kind Providence has placed in our breasts a hatred of the unjust and cruel, in order that we may preserve ourselves from cruelty and injustice. They who bear cruelty, are accomplices in it. The pretended gentleness which excludes that charitable rancour, produces an indifference which is half an approbation. They never will love where they ought to love, who do not hate where they ought to hate."--Edmund Burke

Dude. His analysis of old school vs new school Star Wars is freakily dead on. The new star wars indeed suck it pretty bad, but I hadn’t made that simple connection.
Was initially saddened by Mr. Whittle’s switch to video, having been awed by his previous wordsmithing. This show made up for it. What a treat.
He still does the written word, though most of them are now taken from his “Afterburner” videos. Here’s the one for the Star Wars essay:

Epic win.
Balance, and the ability to make one think, “Hmm, wait a moment, I get that.” And makes you feel good for thinking -as it should.
Non-trivial accomplishment. Good vid.

I remember reading about most of those people and their exploits in my youth, and some multiple times since- thought this esteemed audience would enjoy it.
Interesting site, but Wingsuit flying? I don’t know whether to admire his skill or shake my head at his foolishness at traveling 100+mph to within 3 feet AGL along rocky peaks. As has been pointed out here before, the low-altitude record has been tied many times, but never broken. Fundamentally, how is such sport not an act of selfishness risking one’s future contribution in this world for the sake of a purely transient thrill? Unlike the others, I don’t see how his stretching the envelope contributes to mankind, but that’s just me. YMMV
Good find. Needs to be viewed by 535 or so folks in Das Capital.
What an absolutely fantastic dissertation by Bill Whittle. Well put regarding first three vs. last three Stars Wars movies and yes the last three SUCKED. We must continue pushing back against Obamacare, Cap and Trade, Comprehensive Immigration Reform and all the other statists’ legislation.
I’ll have to look at the link later, it’s blocked here at work (shhhh.) But this is one of the many things keeping me coming back. The variety.
I’ve never seen a Star Wars movie, not more than a few seconds of it as part of reviews or ads on Tv.
I know exactly what he’s talking about, and remember it well when grade school teachers told us to MYOB. I miss that. My kids played endlessly on monkey bars, and only one had the broken arm (bicep!) to prove it.. I consider that a win now and she does too. How do you learn to fall if you not allowed to hit the dirt?
The nanny state is alive and well here in Canada, I hope you Americans can fend it off.
Crap….now I gotta work the numbers. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Parsec
