HMAS Success

Inaptly named, as it turns out:

OFFICERS aboard Navy supply ship HMAS Success were having sex with junior female sailors during shore leave and returning to the ship so drunk they had to be “escorted” to their cabins to sleep it off, an inquiry has heard.

The ship’s captain of 21 months, Commander Simon Brown, told the inquiry before retired judge Roger Gyles QC he was shocked when he received an equity and diversity report in May last year.

It included allegations of sexual predators, bullying, illicit drug and steroid abuse, inappropriate behaviour between officers and sailors and alcohol abuse.

Sounds like quite a cruise.

A little bit confusing in the story. Three Petty Officers marched off the ship in Singapore. People having allegations read to them, but not being allowed to respond to the allegations. Now I don’t doubt that there was some friggin in the riggin, but it sounds like Her Majesty’s Australian Navy is running a “kangaroo court”.

I’m certain that it’s all kosher and it’s just a problem with the reporter getting the story straight.

Of course with all the allegations, there are going to have to be a whole lot of stories “gotten straight”. And if the CO had been on board for 21 months before all this came out, it sounds like he had 3 brass monkeys for department heads. “See No Evil, Hear No Evil, and Speak No Evil”. There are more than a few leadership problems on the good ship “Success”.

I’m beginning to think I was in the USN in the wrong era….. Shoot. Single sex ships. 30 and 45 day cruises between ports. Only 8mm B&W silent porn on 50′ reels. The sailors these days have it soft….. Where’s ye Olde Salt when you need him?

  • “The kinds of sailors who give buggery a bad name”…..

At least we still have rum and the lash….

3 brass monkeys indeed. That’s ten kinds of oblivious not to have a clue until ~11 months into his tour.

As for sex in a bar, I imagine that, so long as damages were paid, the owner will be happy to see them again next time around.

So, just what do you do if you are CO of (squadron, ship, group, whatever) and you find that so and so is diddling a married officer/enlisted, a same sex member, or whatever, and it’s componded by the officer/enlisted thing? I’m all for kicking them fore square in the a$$ and removing them from the service. Not in my service, not on my watch and never. I guess I’m a prude but those who know me would disagree.

Today you get sensitivity training, and remedial instruction, and individual counseling, and addiction treatment. After all, your behavior is not in your control and is only the summation of your past experiences and current environment. For your decisions are obviously the result of past superior influences and you aren’t expected to be able to make a proper decision with the information you have. It really IS somebody else’s fault!

      Oh Bog!

Ashore they just refuse MAST and go for the Court Martial. 3 IG investigations, 21 others investigated to a fair thee well.

Way easier and more satisfying to arrange to have them run over in the parking lot after work.
