The Gulf Stream

One less thing to worry about, apparently:

The Gulf Stream does not appear to be slowing down, say US scientists who have used satellites to monitor tell-tale changes in the height of the sea.

Confirming work by other scientists using different methodologies, they found dramatic short-term variability but no longer-term trend.

A slow-down – dramatised in the movie The Day After Tomorrow – is projected by some models of climate change…

The stream is a key process in the climate of western Europe, bringing heat northwards from the tropics and keeping countries such as the UK 4-6C warmer than they would otherwise be…

Between 2002 and 2009, the team says, there was no trend discernible – just a lot of variability on short timescales…

“The changes we’re seeing in overturning strength are probably part of a natural cycle,” said Josh Willis from Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in California.

“The slight increase in overturning since 1993 coincides with a decades-long natural pattern of Atlantic heating and cooling.”

Thank goodness.

Not slowing, slowing: either way it’s proof of global warming.

And here I thought you were referring to Nancy Pelosi’s Gulfstream, which, requiring no imagination, is not slowing down at all.

Bill K. … Prancing Nancy doesn’t have a Gulfstream. Nothing so modest for her. Dennis Hastert, the previous Speaker of the House, was content with one, but then he’s a grown-up. Nancy has either a 737 or a 757 [can't remember which] so she can haul around acres of folks, related or not related, who make up her entourage every time she travels. And sometimes she sends the 757 with just her relatives and hangers-on, and not herself.

Talk about abuse of public trust — and the public’s hard-earned tax money.

Mea culpa. I repent in dust and ashes, for not being cynical enough…
But have at thee! Ye wot that prior seer, yon Dennis Hastert be a grownup?!? Back in the year of our Lord, the year MCMLXVI, squire Hastert was a knave – Appointed as the master for U.S. government at my local high school in Yorkville, Illinois, he purported to raise us in the manly art of citizenship – while showing movies and sleeping through half my classes – as a teacher of the art of history no less! So noble was his performance, that he was raised to one of the highest sinecures in all the land – but to us, we sorry students, he will always be Sir-Sleep-On-The-Job. And so ’tis not my fault, that I should err (recited with whinging, having been apprenticed by the likes of Him! Right, Flit? Flit… wherefore out thou? Surely thee would be my second, Flit? I have need of thy succour!

The Atlantic has had a natural pattern of heating and cooling for roughly 130 million years, Willis.
