You’ve got to hand it to the writers at The Onion: The online satire portal writes stunningly adept news articles that leave you just gasping.
I mean, where do they get these kinds of things?
Without fanfare, the United Nations this week elected Iran to its Commission on the Status of Women, handing a four-year seat on the influential human rights body to a theocratic state in which stoning is enshrined in law and lashings are required for women judged “immodest.”
Just days after Iran abandoned a high-profile bid for a seat on the U.N. Human Rights Council, it began a covert campaign to claim a seat on the Commission on the Status of Women, which is “dedicated exclusively to gender equality and advancement of women,” according to its website.
Me: Hilarious!
You: That’s Fox News, Lex. Not the Onion.
Me: No way!
You: Way.

When I saw this earlier I might have lost my blogging composure just a little. I mean, the UN putting those pesky Persians on the commission was just more than I could take. Especially with the proclamations from the mullahs about arresting and jailing Iranian women with a little too much suntan and those same immodest women dressing provocatively enough to set off the earthquakes. So yeah, I went off a little. I called my Mom and told her to definitely NOT read my blog today. But it’s probably ok for the bunch of salty dogs that hang around here.
Our world has become that worse possible of all things, something literally too asinine to mock because it has already become more ridiculous than any possible roasting.
To go weirdly way off in another, and far less important, direction I find this same trend in modern pop music. Unlike the fun stuff that came from the 50′s through the ’80′s, or the classic big band and sheet music beforehand, modern music to me has now become unbearable atonal, monotonous and derivative drivel with no one actually making anything melodic, rhythmic or creative. I noticed that from the height of Mozart’s time to now, music in the west -save soundtrack scores- more or less officially died when Weird Al Yankovic could no longer make actual parodies of songs anymore because the attempt to do so proved they were parodies already.
It is for to weep. Where’s my Bombay Sapphire? I know, it’s a school night, but f@#k it.
You know, I felt the same way when I found out they were selling (for a bargain price) FFG-8, the McInnerney to the Pakistan Navy.
Always a bottle in the old icebox bar on the back veranda. Tonic on the right. And the limes are in the left drawer of the fridge. Make yourself welcome.
Commiseration loves company.
What, no beer, G-man?
The UN is an exercise in self-parody, these days. That and futility.
I don’t mind that the “UN is an exercise in self parody.”
However, I mind a whole lot that American Taxpayers are paying a whole lot to keep that merry band of a$$clowns ensconced in their New York Headquarters and engaging in feckless “peacekeeping” and humanitarian missions around the world.
It would be wrong and stupid, even if we could afford it. Which we cannot.
We should leave the UN immediately, and throw them out to set up headquarters wherever they like, as long as it is not in the U.S. and we don’t pay a dime for it.
I’m thinking Haiti, John. If ever there were a country more in need in the western hemisphere I cannot think of a single example. We give the UN notice that it’s lease is up, let them rent space in Haiti, and they can bring all they have to solving the problems of Haiti.
Once Haiti is up to the prosperity levels of, say, Puerto Rico, we consider writing checks to the UN for something other than our seat on the Security Council.

What I’d like to see is us withdraw from the UN and declare all the UN Diplos are now non-Diplos under US law, and arrest the lot for all the tickets they’ve ignored for years. They’d move PDQ, and without us asking them.
Not likely they would move to haiti. The shopping there is terrible.
Makes sense. This way they can start by wiping the Israeli women off the map first. Then they can wipe the men off later. Walk before you can run?
I posted this story on my page yesterday and a liberal high school friend who had recently reconnected wrote (I kid you not), “It could be the honor of putting them on the board is the only way to get them into the room to talk some sense into them” Facepalm. Because thats what you do with people who arrest women for suntanning and think cleavage causes earthquakes. You honor them so you can talk to them. That whole free exchange of ideas. Astounding.
No, they really are that stupid/brainwashed. It’s holy writ that all the worlds problems can be solved by listening and understanding, and thus the UN is the way for the future despite its obvious complete disfunctionality save the WHO. The world’s ruthless, who are in power in most of the rest of the world save the classically liberal slice of western civilization (and even here it takes a certain agressiveness, and with Obama I’m convinced a narcissistic and either very cynical or completely ideological senses to come to power), react in two stages. First is to assume it is a clever trick because the standard operating mode of the human mind is to project that the other thinks the same way as you. Then they realize that they (we) are *earnest* and mean it! And when this realization becomes clear the ruthless know they have an easy mark to con all day long with complete impunity and sleep soundly in their beds at night. Someone remind me again, how many times has Iran been “put on notice” by Obama that if they didn’t cooperate or something by such and such date they would be put on ever bigger notice of maybe getting their hall pass revoked or put in time out, and when the ultimatum date arrived not only did he do nothing but the compliant media didn’t even report at all that another American ultimatum had been blatantly defied without consequence or even official recognition of the fact?
Write your own Onion article!
In a unprecedented vote of solidarity, the governments of Yemen and Saudi introduced what they described as the strictest immigration laws in the entire Middle East this year.
Prince SomethingwithAbdulinit exclaimed, “We simply cannot sustain the continuous surge of immigration our countries have seen for the past decade. Our religious policemen are overworked! Just yesterday I found a woman who was not a prostitute sitting in the front seat of a car next to her husband! Our country is disintegrating.”
The right to asylum on humanitarian grounds, which had previously seen 100% of all applications approved, was scraped, the acceptable grounds for being granted asylum were cut even below the bare minimum required under the Geneva Convention for Refugees. In the future, no applications will be approved, which is also 100% of all applications.
Jim Jong Il quickly followed suit with a similar policy, obtaining a very narrow victory over his opposition last month.
In another front:
The UN Secretary General, met with a round of applause when announcing the UN’s initiative to unpack the strongest list of adjectives EVER today.
To wit: “Sure, we’ve used up every adverb, but words like “recall, deplore, emphasize, recognize, reaffirm, urge, encourage, reaffirm, invite, request, decide, denounce, and demand, are all subject to interpretation. By adding a very compelling list of adjectives in bold type along with the adverbs will truly ensure a proper response to our nasty-grams.”
Sweet.
It does make me curious to see what goes on in the heads of these people when they make these kinds of decisions.
Their thought processes may seem like a Monet – good from a distance but up close it’s just a big ole mess.
My comment from a previous post works here too:
You’re just being culturally insensitive. Coexisting with diverse cultures and mores mean you need to have tolerance for people who think and behave ways very different from your narrow Western perspective.
The alternative to that comment is to say that our system is better, fairer, righter. That it is the result of centuries of slow progress, and it stands so far above the medieval viewpoints held in Iran that we will no longer consider what they have to say to have any value. This might lead to fighting about the differences, and once we won, overthrowing their belief systems, imposing a modern government and rights for individuals.
It worked in Japan, if we had treated Imperial Japan the way we are treating the Islamic regimes, there would still be a Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, and the Emperor would still be divine.
You know the italics are a common refrain, and I especially love the irony of “your narrow Western perspective.” Now of course, the Western perspective is indeed different than Islamic, Confucian, Buddhist, etc. and this difference does not necessarily mean one aspect of any is by definition better than the other. But when it comes to acceptance and tolerance of pluralism, and the ability to absorb and incorporate other ideas I would be willing to wager a hefty sum that history decisively shows that the “narrow Western perspective” is actually the most broad and open and flexible humans have ever developed. But it only works when it tolerates and accepts other viewpoints with a discriminating, open mind that seeks to tolerate and accept in order to increase the moral good of society, and operates from solid moral foundations to inform that discrimination, which in the west are clearly the Judeo-Christian values whether or not the Church or the Synagogue is where you actually pray, if you pray at all. The problem with the current multi-culti, moral-relativism set is that it has no moral basis and is not a perspective at all but a empty minded/closed minded programming that you can NOT judge at all. This is what Allan Bloom has called the closing of the American mind, and it leads to the suicide of the West and not any new dawn of humanity free of racism or hate. Or if anything it’s a self loathing based rejection of anything the West has ever done, and our cultural “leaders” (i.e. the people in the MSM, Hollywood, our musicians, etc.) seem to be doubling down. Finally bought in and watched Avatar last night. Yikes, talk about a piece of crap propaganda film that couldn’t be more subtle about clubbing you over the head with a fantasy political ideology, and more overtly anti-West and anti-American.
To say that the UN is beyond parody is an understatement. I’m thinking the UN bldg in NYC would make a fine Nat. HQ for the Boy/Girl Scouts and/or the Salvation Army. It’s already paid for–they could be titled the deed and they could lease out excess space to provide operating expenses. And should the UN desire to continue to enjoy the weather in NYC I say rebuild the WTC EXACTLY as before, relocate the UN there, and rent out the topmost floors to every Muslim country in the world so they can enjoy the view; with American offices on bottom levels. This should have the beneficial effect of garnering revenue while also encouraging NYC/UN-based Muslim diplomats to redouble the efforts of their embassy security services.
I’d leave the GSA out of it. They’ve gone over to teh dark side, having been taken over by the feministas many years ago.
We think it is off base because we have certain pre-conceived notions of what ““dedicated exclusively to gender equality and advancement of women,” means. If you look at it from the point of view of the U.N. it makes perfect sense. If you try real hard, and put yourselves in their shoes, you will see that how the Iranians treat women is the correct way and the Western point of view is the wrong one. /sarc
Look at how the U.N. has historically treated women and children and it all makes sense.
I wonder what all of the feminist groups have to say about Iran being on the Commission of the Status of Women? As the Secretary of State had anything to say about it? Anyone at all? *listens to crickets chirping*
“Beuller?” “Bueller?”
PS:Do Hillery and the entire State Dept over at Foggy Bottom qualify to fly the POW/MIA flag for being MIA on this issue?
i’m fairly certain they applaud it, fing idiots that they are.
besides, why would Shrillery be concerned with woman’s rights?
As I posted above, at least one of the young ladies of my high school social circle (and this is a woman just past 30) says she looks at it as an olive branch to get them to sit down and just talk it all out. I’ve seen several similar comments online from some of our other “chums” and am beginning to see again why we lost touch after school. They moved out of state & became (more) liberalized, whereas I was born an old soul-with common sense.
Simple, eric; such criticism is bigoted, racist, and culturalist. Everyone knows that no one culture is superior to another.
That, and they might get a fatwa thrown their way.

Just another example of how utterly and completely worthless the UN is. I wish I could even say I’m surprised.
To quote Iago from Alladin,”I think I’ll die from the not surprise!.”
An olive branch isn’t needed – I’m thinking a 2X4 might be more useful. I’ve heard it works with mules. And that is just to get their attention.
Iran’s approach may be that if you want to stop something, the best place to be is… on the inside.
