Concerned about the trend lines for this autumn’s mid-term congressional elections, the White House is taking political advice from – wait for it – Michael Dukakis:
Former Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis (D) gave the Obama administration his advice about how to stave off electoral losses during a recent visit to the White House.
Dukakis, the Democratic nominee for president in 1988, advised the administration to target key precincts warning of Republican policies’ effect on the economy, according to the Boston Globe.
“It seems to me there has to be a single message coming from Democrats, from the president on down,” Dukakis told the Globe. “We’ve got to pound that message as hard as can from now until November.”
If we do that and deliver this message over and over again, we are going to be OK,” he added.
Yep. Maybe we will be OK after all.

…Somewhere out there is a piece that describes the speech President Dukakis made a few days after Saddam invaded Kuwait, and he explains that ‘this is a new reality we will simply have to deal with.’
The man was a ninny.

Hmm, what did these two have in common, hmmmm.
Hey, maybe they can get some advice from Mondale too.
I grew up in MA and had to endure the Dukakis fireside updates during the blizzard of 1978; his ever-changing cardigans were supposed to be a sign of his folksy connection to the people in the state.
His presidential campaign was an even bigger disaster than those cardigans. He used to trumpet that he was the son of Greek immigrants – which was true – as if it made him understand the needs of the little people.
His parents came here as teens from incredibly wealthy families that brought that wealth with them to the States. His father went to Harvard Medical School. It was an incredible obfuscation of the facts. He could never connect with the truly struggling immigrants that littered the Boston area.
And while it’s true the “Dukakis in a tank” photo-op hurt his campaign, it was already reeling from the Willie Horton furlough scandal.
And to further the image of the man – he used his campaign to tell people he and his wife had a child die immediately after it was born. Sad and pathetic.
The tank pic made Dukakis a laughing stock. The man never served, as I recall, and that only made Bush stand out even more. A slacker vs a WW2 Naval Aviator who had risked his one behind, and got shot down in the bargain. People know that getting shot down often costs the lives of air crew and knew the one who had the physical courage, and who did not.
QM – according to his Wiki page, he did serve in the Army:
…served in the U.S. Army 1955–1957, stationed in Korea…
That said, the tank photo-op was a disaster. And we should all be grateful for it.
Kris, there is an additional point to be made here. When either the NYT or WaPo (can’t remember which) did a side-by-side biographical comparison they tried to equate the nature of both men’s service by simply saying “Served in the Navy in WWII” in the case of Bush 41 and “Served in the Army in Korea” describing the nature of Dukakis’ service w.o. listing date of service, which would have indicated that he served in Korea after the shooting stopped. The unwary would thus be led to believe that there was a rough equality in the nature of their service/sacrifice. Also rank wasn’t listed either. This is because it is the rare college graduate that willingly enlists in the enlisted ranks unless he wants the shortest stint possible (was only 18 mos then for enlisted) to rtn to civilian life (in the case of Dukakis to politics) and knows the likelyhood of death as an infrantryman is almost zero because the shooting had stopped. Bush, by contrast volunteered when no one knew when the war would end (“Golden Gate in 48″ was the most optimistic slogan) leaving a safe place in college to become the youngest airdale in the Navy with death as a distinct possibility (witness his shootdown and dramatic rescue by sub caught on film.)
The duplicity of the MSM in trying to slyly equate the nature of each man’s service record by under-playing Bushs’ and puffing up Dukakis’ by omission of key details is so typical of the lefty media and shows how they use any and every trick in the book–large and small-to give any and every edge possible to lefty politicians.
Michael Dukakis……let’s see, Michael Dukakis? Sounds familiar. Hmm. I suppose I’ll have to guess. Was he Geraldine Ferarro’s yardboy?
Let’s see, here; effect on the economy if the Republicans win? My guess: a GOOD effect.
I’m wondering how much longer people will swallow that ancient cant. The Democrats have been beating on the Republicans for literally decades with that argument. The GOP wants to starve grandmas on Social Security. The GOP wants to abandon single-parent children. The GOP wants to grind people of color into dog food for their lhasa apsos. The GOP is really the Grinch in disguise!
The Obama-on-a-girl’s-bicycle picture comes close:

“Mr President, your Abrams is here.” Change I can believe in.
“What, Me Worry?”
Is it just me and the Barbancourt, or is there more than just a passing resemblance to Alfred E. Neuman in that photo?
Now virg, let’s not be casting aspersions on my boy A.E.N. Mikey is in a class of his own.
Wow. Dukakis? Now THAT is a blast from the past.
Hey Mikie, how’s that go? RATTA-TAT-TAT? Eh?? Huh?
Not without any ammo on the tray.
