The Somali pirates are reacting to market pressures:
Somali pirates said on Sunday they would lower some of their ransom demands to get a faster turnover of ships they hijack in the Indian Ocean.
Armed pirate gangs, who have made millions of dollars capturing ships as far south as the Seychelles and eastwards towards India, said they were holding too many vessels and needed a quicker handover to generate more income.
“I believe there is no excuse for taking high ransoms. At least each of our groups holds ships now,” pirate Hussein told Reuters from Hobyo on the Somalian coast. He said the pirates were holding more than 30 ships at the moment.
“We have lowered the ransom only for the ships we have used to hijack other ships. We sometimes release these ships free of charge for they generate more (money). But we shall not lower the ransom for the bulk ships we are sure can bring bulk money.”
What a pathetic mess.

Clearly it was the President’s council on bullying that has softened their piratical hearts.
“holding 30 ships”? doesn’t that make their navy bigger than that of the UK and France?
BACK OFF, G-man! (too damn close to the mark)
“What a pathetic mess”
From “Perdicaris Alive or Rasulli Dead!” to this..
“Progress” in an America run by “Progressives”
Have you no respect for human life?
The former status invokes the image of a POTUS with a Winchester… an image that, unfortunately” no longer applies. Now if the Somalis had any communities they needed “organized,” why then he’d be all over that.
I believe a fair price would be 200-300 grains of copper-jacketed lead per hijacker. Delivered at velocity and with extreme prejudice.
Too high. 77 to 147 grains, depending on velocity.
165 grains HPBT. At about 2700 fps at the muzzle if you want to reach out and touch someone. You can substitute the .300 Winchester Mag, or .338 Lapua if you wish and can remember the specs. 7.62mm does fine for me.
I’d settle for 230 grains at 850 fps, if delivered at close range.
“We have lowered the ransom only for the ships we have used to hijack other ships. We sometimes release these ships free of charge for they generate more (money). But we shall not lower the ransom for the bulk ships we are sure can bring bulk money.”
You sure these guys don’t work for the Feds?? They seem to share the same philosophy…
The Indians have captured 61 Pirates from a hijacked fishing vessel that caught fire during a fire fight. Some pirate is also threatening India because os it. I’m sure the Indians are quaking in their boondockers over it.
About time we set up a court martial at Diego Garcia and started capturing a few to feed to the sharks. After a fiar trial of course.
sounds like we should send over a SEAL Team to do some shopping…
but we won’t.
The longer one delays taking decisive action to terminate pirates, the bolder and more troublesome and dangerous the pirates become. Thus it has always been, thus it shall ever be.
Now piracy includes inventory turns, cash flow and commissions.
“Come on down ladies and gentlemen to Crazy Hussein’s boat lot. He’s dealing and has a price to fit every budget. Don’t miss his March Madness specials.”
Suggest we give Hussein and Abdullahi a real “blow out” deal using guided munitions or how about a napalm “fire sale”!
“What a pathetic mess.” Well, the piracy is what it is; our response or lack of same is what is and has been pathetic. Nobody acted after the first few, when it was manageable. Now, it’s out of hand and the pirates hold hundreds of people and tens of ships. If you don’t handle the problem when it’s small it gets bigger and more difficult to take care of. No matter what is done now, some people die, some property is lost . . . And we, the big, bad, bullies of the world (yeah, right!) worry about where to hold trials to the pirates so that they are convenient to their legal counsel we will pay for. LMAO and depressed about it all at the same time.
I say send in a MEU and let them march down the coast for 30 days, then leave. We can say they are rescuing hostages or something, just to satisfy the bleeding hearts. Let every ARG take a turn as they rotate through 5th Fleet until the pirates get the picture or there’s no one left for the Marines to play with.
Nope. The only solution to this crisis is to re-activate a BBS and cruise up and down the coast trashing anything you see.
Sounds like it’s about time to open up a commercial franchise, and obtain a patent for piracy.
That would make a great article for the Onion, wouldn’t it?
From the article:
My problem is this: if we know where at least some of these bastiches are, why not hunt them down there? Not to mention how in the heck do you hide over 30 ships?
What you call “pathetic mess” I call good business. Let’s be reasonable, in today’s world of hi-tech color TV’s and Walmarts and Starbucks Coffee, who wants an unhappy customer?
Face it, the days of punishing pirates on the high seas is over, just watch “Pirates of the Caribbean,” (I, II, III) it’s a franchise now. That means it’s coooooooooool.
The only question when discussing how one treats pirates is: Hanging or impalement? I write as one who would like to cruise in a small boat. It’s not just an economic crime, stealing ships full of goodies; those people get a charge out of murdering and despoiling, whether or not they get much material advantage from it. See the recent murder of the yachtsmen over there.
I like the idea of the Pirate Cruise. The Cruise Director has teh weapons for rent if you don’t own anything suitable. You could even rent a mini-gun at $1K for 30 seconds of firing. I think there would be a number of takers to crew that Q-ship. I’d be first in line. Howze bout you JTG?
You betcha, if I had the bucks. We don’ need no stinking miniguns, M2HBs will do just fine.
Did you see that movie, “The Island”? One resolute guy, played by Michael Caine, took care of all of the pirates with one Ma Deuce.
I think the Indian Navy captured about 60 Somali “entreprenours” on the high seas over the weekend. Hopefully they will use “Russian Justice” on the Somalis.
It appears that India is the home of ass kicking seadogs these days. Good for them.
The news report I saw said they are being taken to Mumbai for trial. Hopefully they will get some method execution. I’m not too terribly wedded to hanging.
Back when, in some parts of India, the method of execution was having your head stepped on by an elephant.
Don’t you just hate it when your retirement fund goes into meltdown?
stay safe.
