McDonald’s had a little hiring event last week. Ended up being quite the thing:

McDonald’s Corp. (MCD), the world’s biggest restaurant chain, said it hired 24 percent more people than planned during an employment event this month.

McDonald’s and its franchisees hired 62,000 people in the U.S. after receiving more than one million applications, the Oak Brook, Illinois-based company said today in an e-mailed statement. Previously, it said it planned to hire 50,000.

A 6.2% take rate at McDonald’s.

Just, wow.

Hey in today’s economy, it’s harder to get a job at McDonalds than it was for Obama to get into Harvard back in the day.

The low rate is not surprising, considering those 1 million somehow had to wait for an invitation to apply. Every McD’s I’ve been to in the past year has had a “Help Wanted” sign out. Motivated, much?

The sad part is my fellow NE Ohioans can’t even seem to queue up for a job without a riot:

Those hired had experience with multimedia productions and active You Tube accounts.

Timothy Geithner affirms that a 6.2 selection rate CONFIRMS that the economy is rockin’and rollin’ to FULL RECOVERY! Just think of the tax windfall from those 62K making minimum wage!!!!

I worked at McD’s for two whole weeks (1972) prior to joining the Navy. My oldest brother managed 10 years while he was attending college part time. I can tell you from family experience that the vast majority of those hired will not last more than a month. I think the whole hiring project was a publicity farce including the “hiring more than planned”. Call me cynical, but in that business you ALWAYS over hire because the fallout rate is horrendous. So I find the whole press around a staged event like this a bit curious. Of course, I am waiting for the followup on the people employed in 5…4…3..2……

(OT aside: Fortunately I already have my passport. I saw the new alternate data form for a passport application that requires an employment history including manager’s names and phone numbers. It would be impossible for me to list that information. McDonalds? Howard Johnson’s? Manpower (how many temp jobs there? 8? 10?)? Stereo Village? Ole wazzis name when I bucked bales for .20/bale? Sheesh! And remember that 40-45 years later? Uh-huh. Riiiiight.)

I find it scarier that only 6.2% of a sample of unemployed America is up to Micky D’s standards…

My understanding is that things didn’t work out so well in Cleveland.
