This reminds me of what the gun nerds are always saying: A gun is not some magical talisman which, when presented, will always secure submission from the other guy.
Presenting a gun, or gun-like object in this case, implies the desire, or at least the will, to do violence. Don’t try that on somebody who is _actually_ willing to do violence, when you are not.

Even were it a real gun, in-close is a whole other combat. Knives are more dangerous than guns inside of 20-30 feet.
