"Sign on, young man, and sail with me. The stature of our homeland is no more than the measure of ourselves. Our job is to keep her free. Our will is to keep the torch of freedom burning for all. To this solemn purpose we call on the young, the brave, the strong, and the free. Heed my call, Come to the sea. Come Sail with me." -- John Paul Jones

"A kind Providence has placed in our breasts a hatred of the unjust and cruel, in order that we may preserve ourselves from cruelty and injustice. They who bear cruelty, are accomplices in it. The pretended gentleness which excludes that charitable rancour, produces an indifference which is half an approbation. They never will love where they ought to love, who do not hate where they ought to hate."--Edmund Burke
“You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours.”--General Sir Charles Napier

What was “Oxnard” named after?

If I see a KFIR launching/recovering from Miramar during my commute I will almost certainly drive out of my lane.
Safe travels, skipper.
Flying? At night? I thought you TACAIR bubbas were beyond such lunacy.
Next thing, they’ll be asking you to fly missions more than an hour or two long.
here’s to another 100+ comment post!
Xformed, page 3 here we go. Uh, not a UK Page 3. NTTATWWT
Don’t get Snakebit.
We were all wondering if you were ever going back to work. Be safe, and bring on the flying stories.
Videos, too !
Just talked to VX. He seems to have marginally recovered from the shellacking LSU got from Alabama.
Either that or he’s sufficiently numb that he’s not feeling it anymore.
In Mobile, life is good if you’re an Alabama fan which I am (went to grad school there). Not so much if you’re an LSU fan.
Good luck on the road, Lex. And yes, that makes no sense.
Breaking news today of the spike in Barbancourt sales overnight… I thought of VX as I watched the game and wondered if the yelling I was hearing from outside here in the MetroMess was him???
Port Why-me-me was one of our regular stops on our annual up-the-coast RV golfing trips. We started from Yuma in March, going to Admiral Baker in San Diego, thence to Port Why-me-me, and wound up at the PG School golf course in Monterey.
Capistrano’s Resturant in Oxnard is a great brunch should the Boss be in town, what with complimentary Mimosas and such.
That may have been VX yelling way back in Lousyana. he told me the game was deja vu all over again from an earlier head coach. With a total of only 92 years, I’d say the head coach’s brain shut down about the time he left the locker room.
Word is LSU is still in NO. Some joker painted a 50 yard line on I-10 and they can’t get across it.
LOL! VX may come hunting you.
Be careful, I’m told that those Marine Hornets have a painful sting. AV-8B bubbas, on the other hand, will bore you to death reminding you that they can hover.
Lex:
You are going up north to almost Santa Barbara to support people out of Miramar? Are you sure that you are not still in the Navy?
Paul
Be safe and check six, sir.
Sir -
Fly safe and keep reminding those kids why you’re the best.

Hey, y’all hold my beer and watch this! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOI2PTJZxPA
Here’s a REAL “hold my beer” moment:

Reaching down the bore to light the trailing fuse? And look at how thin the wall of that is. No sturdy powderchamber.
The Rifle, 16″/50 caliber MK7 it’s not.
Comjam,
The video is a nice composite of two events made to look like one. Notice the apparently injured fireworks maker changes his shirt in the video. Before the blast, he has a logo shirt. After the blast he has a plain shirt without a logo….somehow, I doubt the blast removed the logo from his shirt…..also, somehow the bright lights came back on after the blast.
We have ignition, negative lift-off.
Lessee, Mira Mesa to Magu so to fly sorties out of Miramar. Got it = Jarheads.

thanks….my copy didn’t copy. Here is the correct http://www.e-reading.org.ua/chapter.php/81916/38/Azimov_-_Nightfall_And_Other_Stories.html
Back in Dec, my son spent a week (his first time ever to CA) at Port Hueneme. Didn’t have much to say. Not sure what that means.
Lex,
Pt mugu is my home away from home. Stay at Residence Inn at River Ridge in Oxnard. Sweet municipal golf course wraps around hotel. Good free breakfast and real food at happy hour. Maybe cross paths soon.
USS Aries. Unusual clip of Aries. Comes into view at approx 3min mark.
Seems a surreal resting place:

Man, that’s depressing.
Isn’t it though. Strange place for a final berth too.
Plane pr0n.Vid of Kfir and A-4 entering break and landing. A-4 appears to be former Singaporean:

Lodgings in Port Hueneme? Hopefully they aren’t the “Coleman Tent on the beach” kind again- bit chilly at night for that now.
I don’t think we are going to have a rowdy cheerful comment party here.
Everybody has gotten all morose and grumpy, it seems, what with having too much knowledge about what’s happening in the world.
After the bad news crosses an ill-defined, but definitely existent line, even Drinking Moar won’t help cheer you up.
I recommend prayer.

“After the bad news crosses an ill-defined, but definitely existent line, even Drinking Moar won’t help cheer you up.”
Amen, Brother, AMEN! Sullen awareness that soon our choices are going to be narrowed down between the nasty and totally distasteful vs the absolutely unbearable and unendurable certainly is a buzz-kill. But it’s pretty hard to seek solace in prayer when one is an agnostic…if only I had the firm belief of my Catholic wife..
Flying the P-61
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lo-f2x8T7d8
Joe the “New Pilot” in that flick looks like my old friend Earl Bennett who made the first night fighter
kill of WW2-in a P-70..
Earl came back stateside and participated in the delevopment of the P-61.
He loved that plane…
When I have more time I have to peruse that film carefully..
One of his favorite thing was to get into a turning
dogfight with a P-51…
With a surprised ’51 driver with this black hulk latched on his tail..

Hey, that would be great if you could confirm that! A much overlooked plane. Of course, there weren’t a lot of them made either, less than 1000 of all versions combined.
Speaking of Physics and such here is something I saw this a.m.:http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2012/01/iran-ufo-drone/?utm_source=Contextly&utm_medium=RelatedLinks&utm_campaign=Interesting
The Iranians claim to have a UFO and force field.

How about some fluid dynamics?
http://vimeo.com/26684699
Joe, most of that video is about harmonic motion. One of my major research areas, actually. Fluid dynamic is a more advanced and intense class.
Well, the human body is mostly fluid, right? And that motion was certainly dynamic.
Yeah….
Dynamic….
Very dynamic. I think this requires further observation and careful recordation of a lot of data to be sure we have enough to form a good solid hypothesis. Then we take a lot more data to test the hypothesis and refine it into a theory. If we get enough data, we might make it to the axiomatic level.
Maybe not, but for the sake of Engineering Science, we must make a good solid attempt. We might be able to get a grant to make the fullest possible study. Salty can approach it from a harmonic motion standpoint, and Joe can look at it from a fluid mechanical standpoint. Jeff can look at it from a Nuclear standpoint.
Looks like this is gonna require a lot of data and observation.
Way to go, KFC!
