So the moral of the story is: Date a cougar, they’ll protect you from a moose attack?

One of my model airplane friends lives in Willow and knows the Murphys. The friend flew for the Alaska State Troopers for years. The friend’s wife went down to the Anchorage hospital with the Murphy’s to help out; the community watched over the Murphy’s house. People in Alaska are tough–they have to be to get through the winters. They deal with a lot of things–including mooses, bears and such. And if your husband of many years is getting attacked by a moose< a bear or any other critter well you grab a shovel and wade right in

That’s crazy. That woman is FIT. That shovel had to be bigger than her and a huge percentage of her body weight.

I’m going to have to tell my husband this story. A few years ago there was a gentleman who was out walking in the woods with his wife when he was attacked by a mountain lion. All she could find was a pen in his pocket, so she pulled it out and poked the lion in the eye. I’m an eye phobe. I know, it’s weird as all get out, but I’ve held bleeding children, grabbed them up with broken bones, and that does nothing to me. They get sand in their eye and I’m pretty much not the person to go to. So when that article came out I said, ‘Baby, I think you’d have just gotten eaten by that mountain lion. I don’t have it in me to grab a pen and stick it in the eye…” I COULD, however, wield a shovel and hit a moose. I might not be as successful as she is, she’s a tough woman, but I could do it. I might get some redemption now…

Never, never underestimate the determination (and power) of a woman who wants to protect something important to her…

Glad she was there to help…saw them on the local TV news….tough lady.

Moose are BIG critters, and lots more dangerous than they look. When we saw one near our campsite in Alaska years ago, we were warned to give it plenty of room, as more folks are attacked by moose than by grizzlies in Alaska.
    That’s one very brave woman.

My late MIL slept with a .45 in her night stand…
She knew how to use it too….

  • Sarah Palin’s Grizzly Mommas come to mind. Don’t underestimate pioneer women.

After WWII Mom and Dad spent the first couple years of marriage in an abandoned trapper cabin they rebuilt in the Matanuska Valley before moving to Fairbanks. When Sarah Palin says “Grizzly Momma” I have a very clear picture in mind

  • They still plan to run their dogs at the airport. “I’ll probably have a revolver”, Taylor said.

Wow. I hope I can think half as clearly as she did if I ever find myself in a crisis. 97 pounds. My new hero!

My heroine too, Kris. One never knows what one can accomplish in a crisis. Fellow commenters, remember, never underestimate the power of a woman, especially defending her mate.

Marianne, who is pretty grisly, err, grizzly herself

    • Marianne, check out http://corneredcat.com. It’s run by Kathy Jackson, an editor at “Women and Guns” and a moderator at the old High Road gun-nerd bulletin board.

Kittehs, being light and fragile, have to go for the eyeballs so as to knock and shock the attacker back enough to disengage and run away.

This is sort of like the recommended knife technique for honest non-crazy men: Trying to win a knife fight is crazy and even if you win you will be in the hospital. The defensive purpose of a knife is “Get him off me so I can disengage and get away!”
